bunsofaluminum, I'm very happy to say that I'm just about over this cough now. It's turned productive, meaning that the gunk from the back of my throat to my upper bronchial area is finally coming loose. I'm only having really serious hack attacks every couple of hours or even several hours, and it's always because something's come loose and wants a guided tour of the sink drain. Baibai, harblz, as they'd say in lolcat.
debbie, as already stated, the cough is going away rather quickly. Christmas day I noticed a marked decrease, and today is much better still. As for my edema troubles, those are far less noticeable than they were before I started McDougalling, but they're still present to a slight extent. My thighs especially have a lot of shrinking to do, but their sizes are much closer to equal then even my picture from a few months ago at about 440 lbs. shows. I'll put up my next doorway-blocking pics when I'm at or below 378, which I hope is soon!
debable, it's always an honor to hear about someone taking the time to peruse this journal, only to go back to Page 1 and read all of it. Better still, I realize that the vast majority of those who stop by are looking for some inspiration and motivation, and it is my hope that they'll understand that it's worth trying to do this no matter how far gone you are, or how much pain you're in, or whether or not you have adequate medical care. It's our lives and we only get one, right?
Now, as for those who don't come here for inspiration or motivation, and would much rather spend their time here dissecting the lives of people who come here as open books, merely looking for support and a way to track their progress, they're always welcome to feed their "primitive" instincts as well. If my playing the role of freak show exhibit gets you off that much, cool -- but I submit that this says a whole lot more about your collective character than mine. Mind you, this paragraph is directed at a whole different subset of people than us McDougallers. They know who they are, and now they know I'm watching. The rest of you can all just ignore this somewhat cryptic passage. I may or may not reveal my purpose behind this paragraph to the McDougall community at large, as I see fit and circumstances dictate.
Now, on to more -- shall we say -- worthwhile matters. Both Christmas and today have been rather "meh". Jeanette had to work Christmas, then come home only to have to go to bed very early for a long day today. She got to speak with her mom and brother for a while, which was great. There was some discussion with her brother about her adoptive father, though. Long story short, he was horrible to Jeanette; first, because he's apparently just a jerk by design (up there in the running with my own mother for a spot at the top of the jerk heirarchy), and then I guess there was this thing of her having some early developmental issues (pretty much non-issues now, I'm happy to say), and besides, she wasn't really his flesh and blood.
Yeah, this man has me mightily p.o.'ed. The stories Jeanette's told me aren't fit to be repeated here, but they involve every type of abuse except sexual, and that's plenty bad enough. Jeanette's conversation with bro got somewhat emotional, and we spent a good deal of time talking about it further after they had hung up. Grrrrr....
Today, my cough improved greatly, but I had next to no energy all day long as I continued to get over it. Finally, tonight, I got a good workout in on the recumbent and we watched a couple episodes of Morgan Spurlock's 30 Days together. That's a really good show and it sucks it's been canceled.
I had a huge salad with 3-2-1 dressing for the morning, and a bowl of rice and homemade sauce tonight, followed by a frozen fruit smoothie. Likely will follow a similar model tomorrow. I plan to be on the recumbent as much as I can without serious pain or illness tomorrow. My times are increasing geometrically as it is, and the more I do it the better I feel.
I will also try and check out the rest of your journals tomorrow. I hope you all had an awesome Holiday celebration, no matter which name you may choose to give the holiday. It's all pretty much a Solstice thing to me.

Now, we all know people who have problems with weight, and want to do something about it.
Being decent and civilized people, we do our best to support and encourage them.
But the gigantic primitive's a whole another case.
Two things need remembered: one can change only those things one has the power to change (which is usually only oneself, and no more than that), and while one can't change one's past, one can change one's future.
Both of which seems medieval Annamese to the gigantic primitive.
If the gigantic primitive truly wants to succeed, he's got to stop blaming his problems on other people--on his mother of blessed memory, on his former boss at the casino, on a hapless overworked underpaid handi-bus driver, on his roommate Joe, on George Bush, on Republicans, &c., &c., &c.--and work on himself instead.
It's his attitude franksolich is mocking, not his fat.

That was my inspiration for nominating him. It has nothing to do with his weight, except that he uses it as an excuse for his behavior. He treats his wife like his weight loss, without any level of seriousness. He will end up alone again and we'll read all his musings as to why she left him. He's a spectator, even in his own life.

Now that I know you are watching, let me give you some advice. Get off your fat ass, learn some new skills if you have to, and get a frickin job.
I worked in a dead end customer service position for years. I decided to learn some computer skills, so instead of going out and partying with my friends, I locked myself in my room and learned... I got a good IT job from that effort. I know many IT and software engineer types who are as heavy or heavier than you are, so you have no excuse. Take some of that time you spend whining on the innerwebs, and learn something. You have the best learning tool sitting right in front of you. Learn a programming language. Download some pirated warez and learn how to use some applications. Database administration is probably a really great thing to learn, since all the DBA's I have ever met have been imported from India and Pakistan. Do SOMETHING.

To the lurking McDougaller,
If you are going to get your weight down to Point X and it is a heroic effort that requires our admiration, why did you allow your weight to progress past Point X in the first place?
Seems like it would have been easier and far more satisfying to never have gone down that road than to backtrack the entire distance.

That is the curse of those diet websites...everyone gets together for support and motivation but the underlying issues are never addressed as it is regarded as "mean".
What you end up with is a group of touchy feely enablers.

I looked,the 3-2-1 dressing he speaks of is 3 parts maple syrup,2 parts balsamic vinegar and 1 part Dijon mustard.
There is no oil so supposedly healthy but still am betting loaded with calories from the maple syrup.
Couldn`t find any info on that part.
He isn`t addressing the core issue of his eating,caloric intake and the reality of what calories he really burns.
He thinks that he can exercise some and then eat a lot and it balances,he needs to get a reality on the difference between calories burned and calories consumed and I don`t see it happening.

I really hope he succeeds in losing all that extra weight. I have some to lose too, but thank God I can get up and walk a mile without much discomfort.
He is admitting that his cough is getting better with exercise, there goes one of his excuses. If he is admitting that exercise is making him feel better, then he had better get stepping a lot more. I know he is trying to gradually increase him time on the exo-bike but maybe he needs to increase the increments.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that he flipped the ratios of the dressing, so 3 parts Dijon mustard, and only one part maple syrup, so that would improve the caloric value of the dressing, but it could still potentially have a lot of calories depending on how much he uses.

congrats on the new pounds lost.
I got a rice cooker as one of my gifts and we are going to start Jan 2nd. I plan to start with the 2 cup soup and salad with the 321 dressing.
As I mentioned, I am not needing to lose weight I am at 95 lbs. (I gained a couple of lbs over the holidays) but hubby needs this and we both want to eat better and more healthy.
I may make the Leek and potato soup this week to try it out.
DUmmy greenbriar, on death's doorstep at the DUmp, sounds a lot more vigorous over at the lardass forum.

Not really surprised. Like most things in the life of a lib, giving lip service is the same as doing. So they see someone who's homeless and hungry, and by saying they feel sorry for them then they don't have to actually confront them on a personal level, just saying it's the same as giving them food and a place to sleep. In the meanwhile, the guy's still homeless and hungry.

Yep. He thinks that if he writes that he's guilty, he doesn't have to actually do anything. As USA4ME said, he thinks writing about his feelings is as good as actually doing something. The epitome of his uselessness has to be his fake concern about his wife's job, wherein she was supposedly having trouble, coming home crying. He claims he was going to kick ass about it, then the next day puts out a feeble post that he hopes it resolved itself because he slept thought it. He left the Thanksgiving plumbing problem up to her. He is just useless, but wants everyone to feel sorry for him. I can't imagine what happened to his wife that she puts up with him.

The more I read this the whole thing is just odd. The character of this primitive is that he's another lib who has formed the wrong political opinions and it's made his life miserable, which would be what one has come to expect of the primitives. I was thinking about a job I once had, the best-paying job I ever had, in Omaha, where eight of us were a "team" of supervisors. I was the only outsider, the only one not from Omaha, the only one who hadn't worked his way up the ranks in the company.
The other seven were graduates of Omaha South High School (eastern European derivation, meat-packing families).
God, they were hard people. A rock was foam, compared with them.
Having dealt with graduates of Omaha South High School, even Chief S itting Bull, the bird-smacking stoned red-faced primitive, would be a piece of cake, much less these three stooges.

Having dealt with graduates of Omaha South High School, even Chief S itting Bull, the bird-smacking stoned red-faced primitive, would be a piece of cake, much less these three stooges.
I find it is pretty much the same throughout the Midwest Coach. Many come from blue collar work where being "hard" is a prerequisite to the job at hand. Myself I was born in the center of Kansas, about 60 miles north of Wichita. I was throwing 80 lb bales of hay when I was 8. Farmin', and the business of supplying farms, is about the only opportunity for a young man in that part of the country. It demands a physical stature in order to be successful. It also helped with my eventual profession in construction. I turned out to be a "natural".
