Title: President Says He Will End 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'
Post by: TheSarge on October 10, 2009, 09:09:58 PM
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama pledged to end the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military in a speech Saturday, but acknowledged to a cheering crowd that the policy changes he promised on the campaign trail are not coming as quickly as they expected.

"I will end 'don't ask-don't tell,"' Obama said at the annual dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay civil rights advocacy group. Obama reaffirmed his commitment to end the ban, but did not give a timetable or the specifics that some activists have called for.

The law was passed by Congress in 1993 and signed by President Bill Clinton, who also promised to repeal the ban on homosexuals in the military but was blunted by opposition in the military and Congress.

"We should not be punishing patriotic Americans who have stepped forward to serve the country," Obama said. "We should be celebrating their willingness to step forward and show such courage ... especially when we are fighting two wars.

"I appreciate that many of you don't believe progress has come fast enough," Obama said. "Do not doubt the direction we are heading and the destination we will reach."

Obama also called on Congress to repeal the Defense Of Marriage Act, which limits how state, local and federal bodies can recognize partnerships and determine benefits. He also called for a law to extend benefits to domestic partners.

He expressed strong support for the Human Rights Campaign agenda -- ending discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people -- but stopped short of laying out a detailed plan for how to get there.

"My expectation is that when you look back on these years you will look back and see a time when we put a stop against discrimination ... whether in the office or the battlefield," Obama said.

The last person that started using the military as a social experiment openly stated that he "loathed" the military.

Well then, can the straight fellows shower with the girls? Why not? The girls are the object of their sexual desire. What difference would it make if the girls were uncomfortable?

This idiot is making sure he's going to be a "one hit wonder"!

It's really pathetic. The first almost Black man to hold the highest office, and he's making sure, or at least trying to make sure, he is the last! He's ****in' it up for everyone else that will follow him.

We are in dire need of a strong Black candidate to give this maroon both barrels before he destroys the chances for good Black men and women who just might have a career in politics.

What a nincomPOOP!

Would you rather go to an outright ban on gays/lesbians, including asking sexual preference at MEPS?

Personally, I've got no problem with that.  DADT was the best Billy Jeff was going to get; IOW, we just couldn't ask anymore.  Prior to 1993, it was DT.  Am I stupid enough to believe there were no gay people in the military prior to that point?  Of course not.  But the whole point is, one's sexuality, or the flaunting of it, does not support (all veterans, repeat with me now) "good order and discipline".

Frankly, openly gay men and women in the Armed Forces is going to do more harm than good, not just to morale, but readiness as well.

Having served with several people who were gay, it is greatly "prejudicial to good order and discipline".  How long until the first guy is offended in the shower cuz his squadmate is openly eye-humping him?  How long until that squadmate gets his ass beat?  How many fire teams will be disrupted?  How many guys won't want to practice the fireman's carry, neck drag, etc., because they know their gay squadmate has the hots for them?  How many commander's/1sg's will have time taken up by accomodating the homosexual troops (moving them to different barracks, platoons, etc.) when they could be planning or conducting training that will keep troops alive?

He's breathing...

His mouth is moving, goes the line.

"No guys, seriously I promise to remove DADT soon."

He could suspend it with an executive order, or so the lawyers say. Takes five minutes. Seems to me like if he really meant it he could have squeezed it in the day somewhere. Although flying overseas to lose the olympics to Rio takes a lot of time out of your day...

It'll be interesting to see if this policy change (which Lord Zero has expressed, but hasn't been reflected yet in legislation) actually results in the kind of mass exodus from the services that characterized Ford's and Carter's presidencies.

They called it the "hollow military" in the aftermath of Vietnam for a reason. Far too many seasoned vets cashed in their chips and left. That left some real problems from a readiness standpoint.

I believe DADT was instituted via an EXORD or similar Presidential policy decision, not by legislation, and so could be just as easily changed...in either direction (Depending, of course, on the political calculus of the consequences that any President would make).

IIRC, Clinton did enact an executive order, but Congress followed up with this:

PUBLIC LAW 103-160, SECTION 654, TITLE 10 (http://www.cmrlink.org/HMilitary.asp?docID=29)

But it seems to me that life would be easier and people generally less tense if DADT (AKA Common Sense) was practiced as part of common courtesy. I don't give a flying frog who someone brings into their bed, so WTF does it have to be announced to the world as some sort of merit badge? I don't get it. My ex-wife's brother is as gay as the day is long and he never once felt the need to make his life choices even a topic of conversation, let alone one of debate...  Why someone wants a badge of honor for who they choose to sleep with is  something that I frankly may never understand.

This has nothing to do with gay rights or progressing civil rights.
This isn't about Obama caring for the LGBT community, he doesn't give a rat's ass about them or anyone else for that matter.
This isn't about making the military more progressive or "better".

This is about a narcissistic as*hole who wants to make this a progressive issue so that future liberal professors will praise Obama's legacy as a man of civil rights. It's about expanding his legacy. Obama doesn't give a shit about how this would affect our military function or how inappropriate it is.

And most gay people don't make their gayness an issue in most issues of conversation. Nobody is denying gay's the right to join the military, we just want to ensure that they leave their baggage at the door.

Fair enough.

Alas, the military is a place of communal showers and 2-man tents.

Of all the chickenhawk comments (not you, just in general) its the DADT that irls me the most. I can understand a civilian presidednt ordering troops to war but for a civilian who has never lived the military life to tell me who I have to shower with?

That's where the hypocrisy becomes glaring.

When I'm allowed to shower with the females we can talk.

When I'm allowed to shower with the females we can talk.

ahhh, but MSB, who says they would want to shower with you?

this is a good point though, will they need to create another set of facilities for gays/lesbians, or will all that concern about "harassment" go out the window?

They had co-ed showers in that Starship Troopers movie. I say we go in that direction...

I hadn't really thought about what the average female in the military looks like...

New plan: Opaque shower curtains.

Edit: actually that would solve a lot of the shower problems wouldn't it.

And the answer to Reb's question? I take that as a No.

I don't see the gay/lesbian locker room separation issue as much different than the male/female locker room separation issue.

Which leads me to:  Women aboard submarines.

What are your thoughts?

ETA: I just saw the thread posted about women aboard subs - I will read it now.

The reason for separate facilities is so that women will feel less uncomfortable.  Would you want to undress/shower with men who may look at you like a piece of meat?  Now translate that to gay men/straight men or lesbian/straight woman.  There will be harassment that goes on, and that is , everyone say it with me boys and girls, "prejudicial to good order and discipline."

Clearly the best option is to have different showers for:

straight men
gay men
bisexual men
straight women
gay women
bisexual women
transgender m->f (preop)
transgender m->f (postop)
transgender f->m (preop)
transgender f->m (postop)
hermaphrodites
eunichs

Our bases are going to be huge.

We'll need an entire building devoted to gerbil storage.

Plus, who decides what the ration is?  is it class I or class VI?  expendable, durable, non-expendable?  I would assume that all soldiers would be eligible to request them, how do you prevent the straight ones from selling their gerbils (fraud, waste, and abuse)?

Gerbils are meant to be re-used, right? But they eventually die.

I think that puts 'em as durables.

Better break out the hand receipts.

Oh sure, support yet another government bureaucracy. Gerbil Logistics Committee? Bet they contract it out to Halliburton.

Great, now what am I supposed to do with a govt-issued, durable, gerbil?  I'm sure as hell not gonna use it, I can't sell it, can't even feed it to the cats.  Dammit, just another mouth to feed...

If the damn thing winds up dead, and the body can't be found, that's a Report of Survey for sure.

You might wanna put a collar on him and tie him up.

He'll thank you for your thoughtfulness.

My Dad was in the Navy during WW2 in the Pacific.  I remember back in the 70's seeing these commercials on TV about joining the Navy and, of course, they'd always have these really good looking women in Navy uniform.  My Dad would just shake his head and say "I don't remember any of them looking like that when I was in the Navy."

He'll end DADT only in (God forbid) his 2nd term when no need to worry about another term.
Unless they try to reverse 'No more than two terms for POTUS.'
