Anyone have any ideas what I can do? I don't want to work evenings, early mornings, weekends or major holidays, want flexible hours, and I prefer to work alone or with limited interaction with other employees. I've worked retail in the past and have enjoyed it.

That sounds like a DUmmie that is setting himself up to be unemployed and going on welfare. :-)

Considering where you live, I think that your choices may be limited unless you want to drive to Willmar. I worked retail sales (appliances) at a Sears Store here for a little while. My physical problems got in my way. Other than that, I liked the job pretty well. While I didn't get to make my own hours, they were pretty flexible if one needed time off before the schedule was made.

Geez! I don't think i'd be quitting any job in this job market! :o

Retail usually includes all of those things you don't want. :banghead: :-)

Think upon some jobs or businesses that allow you to work from home. Medical transcription, editing, reporting, that sort of thing.

Having been unemployed for the past 9 months, I'd think twice about quitting a job in this economy.

Having been unemployed for the same amount of time (I didn't get the option of thinking twice about leaving my job - Thank-you MessiahnFuhrer Øbama :bigbird:) I've had to get creative in how I market "Engineering Support Services" (aka systems design and drafting).

I didn't have the option either. My job got off shored to Manila.

I was working on a DoD project that got 75% of it's budget cut the moment The Øne propped his Kenyan feet up on the HMS Resolute desk.

There was a FReeper who mentioned he works for banks from his home. Or anywhere with internet access. I think he worked for a bank, although I don't think he meant to let us know that.

I think it might, indeed, be a bad time to quit a job if you have nothing already in the bag.

Excellent ideas.
Some companies subcontract out customer service to 'at home workers' too.

Jinx, from your turn of phrase, I get the impression this is not exactly a true freely-made choice. Good luck, man.

I have my talents to sustain me. If all else goes to hell, I intend to sell painted rocks to tourist in the Arizona desert. My Lord's Supper on a pebble was a big hit in the past.
Do you have any talents? Any that can be discussed in public?
-
Jinx, hope you find something soon. Don't have a lot of advice to give except take a long hard look at your talents, is there any artistic or craft skill you have that could provide an income stream? If so maybe try and combine that with part time employment.

internet porn or male escort on Craig's List?

How far are ya willin to drive for work?
-
If you've got cash capital or are prepared to take out a cash loan - Have you considered being a day-trader ? Can all be done online from the confort of your home. the more cash capital you're prepared to invest the higher the potential return (or loss - but that's part of the game).
If you're aware enough of the market you can make a killing in pretty much any economic trend. You can even start out modestly - get a few options (for a fraction of a price of the actual shares); sell them for a mild profit and build capital until you can gamble with larger chunks of money.

How about becoming a Morticians Aid. Drive about to hospitals, nursing homes and private residences making pick ups.
Very limited interaction with the customer. The perks are meeting all kinds of rich family's, learning the proper method for dressing hair and applying makeup. Travel is involved for air port pickups driving at the head of a caravan real slow to the cemetery, one can double park anywhere.
Your duty's include standing about sadly shaking your head, wearing dress clothing, loading and unloading flowers and helping the elderly to seats, keeping a box of Kleenex in your pocket and smelling salt's on hand.
You will become a well respected member of the comunity as the town folk will remember your name. Seldom will you have to buy your own drinks as chances are you may be the first person to comfort someone in a family death.
Another perk, you will become acquainted well with the police and they will over look speeding and other infractions you may commit on or off duty.
If you must work a Holiday or weekend it will only be for 4 hours or so. Interesting work, you will be the person to go to for gossip and inside information.
Retail experience a must, you must push for people to buy the most expensive coffin, have the top of the line service, no cost too much for their loved one. You may find your self arranging a catered meal for the family after the service
Theres a lot to do, your only boss will be the undertaker and he/she will once you are trained allow you to make your own decisions about your job and may even consult you if you know the family and they don't.
Even with cremation there are memorials and services to coordinate, and to top it off this job may be the most important job you will do in your whole life time of work.
BTW, reason I though of this is I met a retired man that worked this job part time, I recognised him from 15 years ago when my dad passed. I bought him a beer and he regailed me with storeys about my family I never knew.

True, I'm pretty sure my electric company does that because every time I call them it sounds like I'm waking them up, and you can hear kids or dogs in the background.

By any chance is that one of those rural electrical cooperatives?
