Yesterday.
After 30 years.
If you are so inclined flip me a prayer. :)
-
Congrats asdf! stay strong buddy! The first 3 days are hell! Drink alot of water it will help to flush the nicotine out of your system faster. Prayers for you. You going cold turkey?
-
ASDF. This is weird. 15 years ago TODAY, I crumpled my pack of Camel Lights and tossed them in the trash can, after smoking for 10 years.
I haven't smoked a cigarette since.
You got the prayers.
I've never said I quit. I said "stopped smoking." It was a little thing, but to me, it made it easier.
The first few days are the hardest. It gets easier.
-
Good luck... I quit a couple of years ago and if I can quit anyone can. I smoked for 50 years..
Everyone is right about the first few day.. Hope you make it...
-
12 years of smoking, and up to 1 1/2 packs a day at the end. The hardest part for me was about two weeks in when everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, started coming up out of my lungs. But I've been smoke-free for over 12 years now, and besides the inevitable few pounds you're always fighting, it's all good.
-
THANK you guys. I needed peer success stories today. :-)
I started taking a drug called "Chantix" which fakes out the nicotine receptors in your brain.
You are supposed to be on it for a week and you keep smoking like normal and when the cigarettes run out you just stop smoking. I didn't make it a week.
I went for a hike with my dog yesterday and halfway through it I realized I hadn't brought my smokes. I took the kids to the health club last night and we swam for a while and I left my butts at home. 3 or 4 hours later I took a call and went out on the deck and lit up and it tasted like an ashtray and my throat and nose got irritated halfway through.
I put it out and this morning my wife took the last 3 or 4 packs and all the ashtrays into work with her to throw 'em out. 9:20 yesterday evening. I wrote it on the calender.
I haven't been going nuts today. I am finding myself anticipating having a smoke when I do something that went along with that, but I am kind of just going, "Oh Yeah". Provided the Chantix keeps working like it has been this should be a pretty easy transition. Please Gawd, lol.

DITTOS.
I told my wife that I wasn't "Quitting" but that I was going to be "Recovering" like an alchoholic.
I don't think you ever quit. I think you just force yourself NOT to do it the rest of your life on some levels.
-
Hang in there man. I'm pulling for ya!

Quitter can't hang

Hey ASDF,
Not my story, but my Mom's.
She smoked for over 30 years, until 15 years ago when I basically begged her to stop since she was coughing all the time by that point.
She quit cold turkey and never touched another one.
Her physical health improved rapidly and dramatically. She is in her mid 70's now and walks about 50 miles a month on average just for exercise.
You've done a good thing, not just for yourself, but for everyone in your life.
Hang in there and you'll be amazed at how quickly you notice improvements in your health and everything else.
-
ASDF, this is good to hear as I would never date anyone who smoked. :p
My Mom quit cold turkey about 3 or 4 years ago. They found something in her lung and she was going in for a biopsy. The day before her biopsy she was coming in for the radiologist to go over her chest xray. He pointed out the emphysema and told her that the lung tissue will NEVER go back to normal even if she did stop smoking. He stress that once her whole lung was black she was a gonner. We walked out the door of the hospital and she threw her pack of cigarette away. She hasn't had one since. She had the biopsy and it turned out not to be cancerous thank God but she got her wake-up call that she needed. Her emphysema was pretty bad for a person her age by the way, think of your lung turning black the next time you crave a cigarette.

You can do it. My Dad quit ......... twice. :rotf:
Actually that's true. He started in WW2 when he was on board ship and had to stay up late on watch, quit when the war ended, started back again about 10 years later when his business took off and he was having to work long hours and travel a lot, and quit cold-turkey on his birthday in 1968.
He was very strong willed. I get the feeling you are, too. Hang in there.
.
-
Good luck man. I quit back in '07 after only 6 years, and that was hard enough.
Other than the occasional cigar or pipe, I can count on one hand the number of cigarettes I've had since.
-
congratulations! Use whatever psychological tricks you need to keep off and always have your list of reasons why you quit handy.

You have a prayer from me but much less of a success story, LOL. Keep up the good work and as stated above, do keep a list of reasons why you stopped. (I've quit unsuccessfully for around 6 months at best)
Semi-good news from me is that I'm down to about a pack every 4 or 5 days instead of almost a pack a day. (tax revolt) Anyway H5 to you and best wishes.
-
I don't have the exact date down, but it was right about this time 30 years ago when I quit.
There might've been patches in those days, but I didn't have the money for 'em. (Had money for cigarettes, but not for drugs. Go figger.) Anyway, my technique was to go to a pipe. That was also the start of my 22-year running career because I damn near died on a one-mile run. THAT was unacceptable and quite alarming.
After about a month of that, the pipe got to be such a pain in the ass that I just chucked it in the trash can.
Never looked back, but I still had the occasional urge after six months. But eventually, that died away.
Better that than my lungs!
When the urge to smoke strikes, find SOMETHING to do. IMMEDIATELY.
Pullin' for ya, asdf. :cheersmate:

HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
H5

Well I guess if you're quitting that then you must be a John McCain conservative.
Good luck

Chantix is a good drug and has gained popularity with the latest round of cig taxes. Even if folks find their insurance wont pay for it, they are ready to quit and paying out of pocket.
Good luck to you!

The quiting of the smokes (Day two Yay ME! :yahoo:) is to help facilitate exercising and diet to help deal with the type 2 Diabetes that I was diagnosed with. Well, deal with that too. NEEDED to quit for other reasons.
This last week has been an excersize in realizing that sometimes God shouts. :)

And sometimes He whispers. My problem is my hearing's bad, so I'm a little slow on the uptake... :p
You can do the quit, asdf. You can do it. :cheersmate:
-
Good luck with the physical health improvements, asdf.
-
Best wishes and lots of prayers to you, asdf! You are doing a wonderful thing for yourself and also for your family. <<<<hugs>>>>
My other half keeps trying and hasn't been successful.....yet.
-
Good Luck, you can do it!
I'm closing in on 8 years since I quit a up to 3 pack a day habit. When the jones hits just tell yourself, NO I don't smoke any more. Then live it. :-)
-
For me, what it boiled down to was this:
I was ready to quit smoking. Ready, willing and able.
A lot of people who profess they want to quit and don't, really don't want to quit - they just want to play at quitting.
So, for whatever reason, whatever the time frame, whatever the circumstances, you have to ask yourself:
"Am I ready? Am I really ready to quit smoking?"
If the answer is yes, and it truly does have to be 'yes', then take the gloves off and do what has to be done.
Millions of people have quit - for good.
Do you want to join those ranks?
I did. And did.
-
I quit a two pack a day habit cold turkey a little over 5 years ago. The first three weeks was filled with all kinds of nasty black tar coming out of my lungs. That was a major wake up call as to what I was doing to myself. About 3 months later I raced my daughter up 5 flights of steps in a parking garage. I was jumping two and three steps at a time. When I reached the top I stood there and realized that I was not even winded. That is when I knew there is no way I could ever let myself smoke again.
-
Happy to hear about that. I don't have any success stories outside of saying that my sister quit six months ago, but I wish you well. :)
-
Good luck ASDF.
Chatix helped me quit. But one word of caution, for some like me, it's like being an alcoholic. If you have just one butt, you end up a full time smoker again.
I had quit for almost a year; I had a celebratory smoke with my SIL when my grand daughter was born. Big mistake. WHAM>>> back to smoking a pack a day just like that.....
-
Good luck asdf! I quit 17 years ago cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant. Prior to that I had a couple unsuccessful quit attempts. You can do it dude, may the schwartz be with you!

I chew a piece of Nicorette after sex.

There ain't no sensation in the world like the Holy Ghost grabbing you by the short hairs at the back of your neck and shouting, "THIS WAY, DUMBASS", in your ear. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, you know it.
Keep up the good work Dave. We're rooting for ya, and prayers for your success are in the "up" pipe.
-
I wanna thank you guys.
This last week was one of the longest, best and worst weeks of my life and every little bit has helped.
Just thanks. :)
-
Hang in there man. Try visualization techniques. I did that and it really helped. Just imagine a DUmmie tripping and falling into a hole or something everytime you don't smoke. :-)
-
Prayers and good thoughts of encouragement continuing <<<<hugs>>>>

This is a cool little program to keep track of your non-smoking progress. It gives you an idea of what you've done for yourself by quitting.

Congrats on the mile stone.

I am proud of you! I had to go cold turkey 11 years ago and it sucked balls soooooooooooo hard. I only dream that I am smoking maybe once a month now. It is amazing the death grip those things can have on a person's mind.
-
Keep up the great work, Sir!

I'm trying to lose weight. It's a little less stressful. :p

I'm doing both at the same time and stressful is a mild descriptive term, lol.
The Chantix can have some funky side effects, mostly a little nausea when you first start it and some funky dreams. Truth to tell I was so stressed out when I quit that I am not sure if a couple of wicked anxiety things were Chantix induced or just me dealing with pent up stress.
-
Good job.
Light up and celebrate!

Proud on you!!!!
Hope the stress is getting better.....<<<<hugs>>>>
