http://newsbusters.org/blogs/warner-todd-huston/2009/02/02/nbc-obama-calls-singer-jessica-simpson-fat
Apparently, President Barack Obama thought that Jessica Simpson's weight was something he needed to make fun of during his pre-Super Bowl interview with Matt Lauer on NBC Sunday. Seriously. Obama called Jessica Simpson a fatty on national TV.
Lauer displayed for the audience the cover of a recent issue of the tabloid entertainment magazine US Weekly that featured the President's wife and daughters and also had an insert photo pushing a story about singer Simpson.
As he viewed the cover, Obama decided to smack the singer down for "in a weight battle."
MSNBC Transcript
Lauer: Yeah, well -- let -- let me show you. This is the -- the current issue of -- of Us Weekly.
Obama: Right.
Lauer: And here’s a great picture
Obama: Oh, it’s beautiful.
Lauer: -- of -- of you and -- and Michelle and -- and your daughters. Now, the -- the reason I bring this up I think is funny. It’s a great picture.
Obama: Yeah.
Lauer: But I wanna show you the cover. Look what they did. They -- they took you off the cover.
Obama: Yeah.
Lauer: They took you out of it.
Obama: It -- it’s -- it’s a little hurtful.
Lauer: You got replaced by Jessica Simpson.
Obama: Yeah, who’s in a weight battle apparently. (LAUGHTER) Yeah. Oh, well.
**** YOU, O!

I was flipping TV channels yesterday.....came across the NBC Pre-game show ....stopped for a few seconds..... they flashed a headline on the screen
"6 MINUTES UNTIL PRESIDENT OBAMA"
...I turned the TV off and only caught the last 38 seconds of the game.
How lucky can one fellow be in one day....HUH?.... :rotf:
-
I believe he was referring to the article being about Jessica's weight - he was quoting US Weekly's cover. You can fault him for a lot but I don't think you can fault him for quoting the magazine.

That's not what matters. He is the President of the United States of America. He should NEVER make personal cavalier comments about a fellow American in that way. It is classless and demeaning to our office.
We had eight years of crassness during the First Teenager President's occupation (Clinton). It was followed by eight years of pure class. Now we have another pop culture idiot to abide. That more people don't see the contrast is astounding.
As long as the Big Zero holds our office ransome, we need to be extremely critical of each and every demeaning chip he makes in its pillars.

WOW. lol He was just being funny/silly. He wasn't making fun of her, because really who cares, he was making fun of that dumbass magazine and it's silly headlines. Sense of humor is a good thing :) It wasn't classless at all. Matt Lauer was the one flashing the magazine around, not Obama :)

I don't give a crap what the circumstance were, the President should not make such "observations". Comedy is best left to the professionals.
The Big Zero's remarks drew unflattering attention to an individual American. That is classless.
LOL all you want. It speaks volumes.

It showed a distinct lack of class IMO.
The man is the President of the United States, not some frat house president.

Man everyone's all up on Obama's nuts for reading a headline from the magazine. Yet nobody mentions that it was one Matthew Lauer who drew attention to Jessica Simpson in the first place. Doesn't that show lack of class? lol Oh well :) Kind of a silly thing anyway.

Lauer isn't the one that made an inappropriate reference to her weight. Obama did.
He needs to learn quick like that his ass ain't still on the block in Chicago.
-
Yes, Matt did bring it up first, but Obama CHOSE to respond in an equally classless manner. There are many better ways Obama could have responded, but given who he is, it would be too much to expect him to rise above the gossip rags' behavior. Both of those men lack class.

Complaining about this is equal to when the left complained when Bush was being funny "looking for WMDs." IMHO.
-
Complaining about this is equal to when the left complained when Bush was being funny "looking for WMDs." IMHO.
Completely different context. Was two-term President George W. Bush being interviewed by a "serious" journalist on a national network before the most-watched television event of the year?
Your Magic Negro remains a classless clueless out-of-his-element halfwit, IMHO.

I thought it was foolish when Bush did that and I posted as much on another board.
I wasn't a member here at the time.

what about his comment on being cut from the picture? "hurtful"? is he honestly thin-skinned enough to be hurt by what US WEEKLY does to a picture on their cover?

No, Bush did it in front of hundreds of journalists and it was then repeated ad nauseam on tv for days. But whatever.
-

Even I can understand that comment. It was hurtful to be separarted from his family, photgraphically speaking.
Give the guy a break for gawdssake.
-
No, Bush did it in front of hundreds of journalists and it was then repeated ad nauseam on tv for days. But whatever.
It's a little more complicated than that. Since many many many WMD were found in Iraq, and since the liberal media refuses to acknowledge such, President Bush wasn't making a joke so much as he was making fun of his audience. Of course, liberals being liberal, the sarcasm backfired. Liberals have no sense of humor or shame.
Once again, the contexts are entirely different. The classless boob known as the creepy half-white president was totally and ignorantly exposed for what he is. The man has no clue. He should resign today.
-
If this is his cavalier attitude during an off-the-cuff moment with some morning show ditto head, what's going to happen when there is a national crisis and he's forced to respond?
Did he call her fat? No. He simply mocked the tabloid's cover and article title. But the President of the United States should be above that. He should have put Matt in his place (gently and with tact) while dismissing the tabloid and not dignifying the Simpson story. He could have handled this much better.
I guess we need to send Tom Cruise back over to Matt's to put him in his place again. :lmao:

You could say the same for anyone who refers to a black man as a "negro". Good lord son, grow up. If you can't make a valid argument based on facts and rational commentary, then you need to shut the heck up and avoid the racist dialogue. Geez.

Sweety, you are out of your element. I had higher hopes for you, but you just aren't well-informed. Please do yourself a favor and research who it was that brought the term "The Magic Negro" into the modern political lexicon. It wasn't me.

It's a reference to an LAT op-ed about the counterfeit mythological status afforded person's of color in movies such as Bagger Vance and Bruce, Almighty.
BTW - the op-ed was written by an african american

I just saw the coverage of this very story on access Hollywood - yeah I'm that bored right now. LOL
Anyway, the bottom line for me is, if he wants to be taken serious as President of the United States he wouldn't even entertain the conversation with Matt Lauer. It wouldn't be a thought in his head. I would rather he be preoccupied with all those wonderful things he has promised to do than have a little sit down with Matty. ::)
Honestly it just shows that Obama is more concerned with making sure everyone loves him more than running the country and keeping us safe. OF course that has been obvious with his choices of cabinet members and hanging out in the press room and making sure he is photographed in the oval office on the phone. It is freaking Hollywood President and honestly I am not surprised by his comment or his willingness to even discuss that his family is on the cover of some gossip mag.
Personally I have never thought that entertainment and politics mix, actually I have always thought that was the worst possible combination. Just one more way to see how this presidency is more of a popularity contest than anything else. ::)
-
I don't wish to hi-jack the thread, but I never did like the usage of <hypenated> American.
This includes, but is not limited to:
African-American
Japanese-American
Chinese-American
German-American
Italian-American
etc...
Either one is an American or one is not. I care less about where one's ancestors came from or the color of their skin.
IMO the usage of such terms only continues to be devisive between sub-cultural elements of our society.
Sorry for the thread drift, but PCism is a pet peeve of mine.

Don't call me sweetie. And don't use the fact that the term was created by a black man, as the sheild that makes it okay for you to repeat it and act like a friggin' self-righteous know it all. You are condescending and rude because you rarely have anything relevant to say. You have to use other people's words instead of your own. And you use them in tacky, ridiculous ways. So let's pretend that I respect you, and you can just pretend like I'm the dimwit little chick you've made me out to be.
Peace the frick out. Good lord. This topic is out of control.

Maybe you guys that are all ripped over this just expect more from your guy, personally I think he's dirt. However reading the cover of a national magazine in no way brings him down lower than dirt in my eyes - only his policies can do that. As for Jess, I'm sure she's fine with the extra publicity.
He called Sarah a pig and that was low; Sunday was nothing other then a media/barack love fest.

It isn't about the term being coined by a black man, sweetie; it's about the psuedo-mythology assigned to him because of his skin color. Pony McHope-coke is trying to play a big people's game when he hasn't even had to cross the street without the like of Bill Ayers holding his hand.
He's a rank amateur with an emphasis on rank.

Yes, but he can pronounce "nuclear" without an accent and that's what is really important.
-
I thought it showed his naivete. He should know that every word coming out of his mouth will be scrutinized. I'm sure he didn't set out to demean her but it came out that way (and yes I know that it was Lauer who brought up the photo in the first place). Bush had said some stupid stuff before as well and I will admit that I am playing "tit for tat" with regards to this kind of thing. :-)

His skin color is the only reason he was elected. Outside of that, he has done nothing in his entire pathetic life. To have the AUDACITY to write 2 books about the NOTHING he has done i his NOTHING life is truly awe-inspiring.
He continues to be Black and thus, I guess he continues to be qualified based on the criterion his voters used.
He is, indeed, the Magic Negro -- a term hung on him by an extremely liberal columnist from the L.A. Times.

I don't recall President Bush ever saying a hurtful thing about a fellow American, though. That's where the Crass Sea parts, IMHO <<whatever that means.

After watching the video. Personally, I perceived it more as a slam on the silliness of taking those magazines or papers seriously. Rather than a slam on Jessica Simpson, who's still gorgeous IMHO.
Ideally, yes I'd be inclined to say it shows his inexperience as a statesman. As his words will undoubtedly be meticulously raked through, by the world. However, that doesn't appear to be a scripted interview. That being the case, and that we don't live in an ideal world, or have ideal candidates for office. I can't expect, every statement to be perfectly eloquent and unassailable from controversy. Lord knows, we didn't hold Bush to that level of accountability :thatsright:

Shrugs, I seem to recall a few people being hurt by his words. A certain reporter with sunglasses. A certain mother working three jobs to support her children. So on and so on.
More importantly though, did anyone else notice that BEG said "tit" :cheersmate: YES! :cheersmate:

Once again though, BEG mentioned "Tit" :rocker: :rocker:

I think the interview went exactly as they both expected.
And I think the reactions to it in this thread are a little overblown.

I expect a sitting President of the United States to act with more than juvenile decorum, and not like a spolied hollywood celebrity.
I hope he soon learns to act less like a hollywood celebrity and more like a world leader.
-
But, but, but, he's one of USSSSSSSSSSSSS! He underSTANDS!!!!!! He reads magaZINES!!!!!
I have plenty of serious issues with Obama to take this one too seriously, but I bet this little quip brings his popularity UP with the masses, not down.

The thing is though...this is exactly who he was before he was elected.
I guess I just don't understand the shock. Of course he spoke without tact. That's who he is. People still voted voted him in and they probably ate it up yesterday.
I don't know. Maybe I'm too resigned to what we have for the next four years. Nothing shocks me anymore? Wasting energy on something like this just seem futile.
I have to save up my energy for keeping my job and not going broke.

[putting on big meanie conservative hat] So are you just going to bury your head in the sand for the next 4 years and ignore whatever Obama does and says regardless? [/putting on big meanie conservative hat]
:-)
Seriously, he needs to conduct himself with a lot more maturity and forethought. He won't have a teleprompter in front of him when he is dealing with other world leaders.
Simply put, he ain't a community organizer for ACORN dealing with the boys on the block anymore .

I'm not going to ignore it per se. I'm certainly going to pay attention to it all. But what can my kvetching about it do to change the situation?
I guess I expect this kind of classless dialogue from him for the next four years.
We can wish and hope that he strives for a higher standard of decorum. But you know the old saying, "Wish in one hand, shit in the other, see what you get first."
Seriously, he needs to conduct himself with a lot more maturity and forethought. He won't have a teleprompter in front of him when he is dealing with other world leaders.
Absolutely agree. But again, the fact that this guy can't rub two thoughts together without help wasn't a secret. So, we can wish for a guy who has great maturity and forethought but that's all we can do--wish. Most of America didn't care about that or they wouldn't have voted for him.
I don't know. Call me a bad conservative or whatever. I can't waste my energy on every childish, tactless thing that he says.
I guess I am going to bury my head in the sand. I'll see you in two years when we will try to at least stop some of the damage he has caused.

Not that I give a royal crap about the organization, but can you imagine the horror the UN interpreters are gonna face when they have to pretend this ignorant Chicago-schooled roundtooth starts in with his "umm's" and "ahh's" is an important person? There is going to be a lot of laughter unheard.
This dope needs to resign now. He's not only in over his head. His butt is being scraped up by the ruff surface of the bottom of the pool.

Way beyond astouding. Frightening. But perhaps that's just an indication of how many more people lack the class to see classless behavior such as Barack "Lipstick on a pig" Obama.
As long as the Big Zero holds our office ransome, we need to be extremely critical of each and every demeaning chip he makes in its pillars.
Whatever criticisms, they really need to be delivered with class, not like he, this thugs/thugettes in the advocacy/adversary media and blogs such as Puffington Host, Daily Kos, DU, etc., deliver.
He deserves the same level of respect he and all of those voices gave former President George W. Bush.
