President Barack Obama is expected to sign "several" executive orders on Thursday directing the Central Intelligence Agency to close its network of "black sites," or secret foreign prisons, and order the closing of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp within a year.
The executive orders, aimed at rolling back much of former President Bush's architecture for the war on terror, involve "altering CIA detention and interrogation rules, limiting interrogation standards in all U.S. facilities worldwide to those outlined in the Army Field Manual, and prohibiting the agency from secretly holding terrorist detainees in third-country prisons," the Washington Post said citing sources familiar with the briefings.
The New York Times said the "orders would bring to an end a Central Intelligence Agency program that kept terrorism suspects in secret custody for months or years," and "also prohibit the CIA from using coercive interrogation methods."
A revised version of the Army Field Manual was released in 2006, explicitly banning enhanced interrogation techniques such as beating, using dogs to intimidate, electric shocks and waterboarding, which critics say is tantamount to torture.
On Wednesday, White House counsel Greg Craig met with top Republicans to review the president's plan and "told members of Congress to expect 'several' executive orders on Guantanamo Bay."

IMO, this makes the right wing concerns over his alliances something worth considering. I might not say that if he wasn't taking this kind of action so quickly. This guy is going to just open the doors for terrorists.

damn. just....damn.
We are screwed.

Osama bin Laden got what he wanted this last election; someone who'll bring spitballs to a nuke fight.
.

Of course we all know what will happen when/if some of the Gitmo detainees are moved to the US and havoc ensues wherever they are placed.
"This never would have happened if Boosh hadn't illegally detained them in the first place. It's all his fault."
-
Within the year I'll bet we get hit again, and it'll still be Bush's fault (If he haden't...fill in the blank)
Looks like the country voted in a Moonbat.
-
WTF is next? Putting a giant target on the Sears Tower? Might as well since the Big Zero is going to be catering directly to the terrorists.

Well he's done it.

if (when?) we get hit again, this is going to be indefensible.

Per Politico (http://www.politico.com/politico44/)
Best buddies: John McCain and Lindsey Graham released a joint statement supporting Obama's order to close Gitmo.
"We support President obama's decision to close the prison at Guantanamo, reaffirm America's adherence to the Geneva conventions and begin a process that will, we hope, lead to the resolution of all cases of Guantanamo detainees," they say.
But they add: "Numerous difficult issues remain...We believe the military commissions should have been allowed to continue their work. We look forward to working with the President and his administration on these issues."
-
Per Politico (http://www.politico.com/politico44/)
yeah, but lindsay graham recently lost his mind. and john mccain may have never been fully in possession of his marbles. :-)
-
And now this just highlights his ignorance.
He doesn't seem to understand terrorists are not reasonable people. If strap-on bombs don't show that, I don't know what will? Perhaps flying a jumbo jet or two into an american landmark maybe?
-
Per Politico (http://www.politico.com/politico44/)
didn't team obama pretty much come right out and call mccain an semi-insane old man that was utterly bewildered when he wasn't actually erratic?
hell, we can't afford 4 more years of failed bush-mccain endorsed policies, dammit!

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I cannot believe zero actually did this. I naivelly thought that after getting some of the "inside scoop" from those departing, he would change his mind and spin it somehow to calm the moonbat masses. What a huge mistake. We will surely be hit again. Then, however, he's toast. I don't want to make the wrong first impression, because I'm a decent person, but even decent people have evil thoughts (like "what if they hit the capitol?")
Does anybody here check any muslim sites/forums to see what the chatter is?

it isn't actually closed, so he hasn't done it yet. but let's face it, sooner or later, he had to keep a campaign promise, even if it was completely by accident. :-)
and welcome to CC!

Of all the things that need taking care of in America and the world, Obama does this on his second full day in office? Oh, please.
Certainly, this is payback to the fascists and other leftists, as well as liberals, here and abroad, who supported him. The Europeans must be beside themselves with glee. Terrorists everywhere, too.
And it's a clear signal to the terrorists that we may be returning to the Bill Clinton days of serve'em-with-legal-papers approach to fighting terrorism. We all know how successful that was. Well, all of us except those who were murdered on 9/11 in that act of war. And those who died in the embassies bombings. And the USS Cole.
-
Ok, so here is the first thing he has done which horrifies me.
Yeah -- we're screwed. The military should just kill them then. Don't ask a freakin question, just kill them.
-

Exactly. Killing someone who is shooting at you is still OK. Taking the same person prisoner means you will be enmeshed in a legal morass for God knows how long.
If anyone on the military doesn't get the point, then they will.
The Law Of Stupid Consequences -- the new fuhrer kicks it in on Day 2.
And my pony hasn't arrived yet BTW.

The executive order says everyone in custody should be questioned under the Army Field Manual, which is intended for honorable combatants, meaning POWs in a military conflict. The rule would prevent trained interrogators at the CIA from using lawful interrogation techniques against terrorists who have been trained to withstand Army Field Manual techniques.
"The message that we are sending the world is that the United States intends to prosecute the ongoing struggle against violence and terrorism and we are going to do so vigilantly and we are going to do so effectively and we are going to do so in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals," the president said.
According to sources in the law enforcement community, the executive order on interrogation does not declare "enhanced interrogation techniques" to be torture; the order is silent on that.
"This allows for a lot of flexibility, a lot of wiggle room," said one source.
WTF!!!
I pray that the last sentence is true. God help us all.

What really sucks is that it is the conservatives that will be doing most of the killing and dying to restore the republic that the liberals are currently working so hard to destroy.

Here's one for the racist rednecks that voted for Jack Murtha (his words, not mine).
Murtha Says He'd Take Guantanamo Prisoners in His District
Rep. Jack Murtha, D-Pa., says he'd be willing to house prisoners from Guantanamo Bay in his congressional district if President Obama makes good on a plan to close the U.S. prison there.
"Sure, I'd take 'em," said Murtha, an outspoken critic of the Iraq war. "They're no more dangerous in my district than in Guantanamo."

Enjoy.

I heard that this was an empty offer considering that Murtha has no federal prisons within his district. OTOH, a republican congressman had a good idea, ship them to Pelosi's district and reopen Alcatraz as a federal pen.
-
What disturbs me more is the legal ramifications, such as exposing intelligence in open court during the painstaking process of protecting these monsters' "rights." Also, the defanged interrogation procedures. I agree, just kill them, no questions asked.
Gitmo itself doesn't bother me as much, because these scum are going to miss their island paradise mightily when they're shipped to a regular prison. No more ocean breezes and soft lapping of the waves in the beautiful sunshine. Don't drop the soap, fellas!
-
Welcome, Karen.
There are those here who do listen to the chatter.

If you forced Pelosi herself to pay for it, I'd go with that idea. But that won't happen.
Alcatraz closed because it was too expensive to run. They even had to bring over drinking water, much less everything else.
The bastards aren't worth the expense - at least when the taxpayer is footing the bill.

As Leon Panetta, the newly appointed Director of the CIA, has no intelligence experience, I would venture a guess that all covert ops would be hidden from him and remain in operation.
The intelligence sector is going to play this adminstration like a fine tuned fiddle.

My thoughts exactly. The Big 0 has not a clue, especially when he dosen't even know WTF he is signing. (see EO's)

What Dutch said, and welcome, Karin. Although we are almost all Conservatives of one stripe or another, attitudes and niceness quotient about the opposition and events in general ranges widely here, you should say what you really think and let the chips fall where they may. I am on the lower end of the niceness quotient myself, with plenty of company, which is not a male preserve at all (mamacags and delilahmused can deliver some really special scorchers when they get spun up!).

Actually Chris, if you look at the entire conversation, it's a helluva lot scarier. He said he had a minimum security prison in his district. Then he was asked would he take them. That's when he made that asinine statement.
MINIMUM F'N SECURITY? This guy is high.

ONCE AGAIN, democrats have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are simple minded fools.
They think in two dimensions - this is the problem, this is the solution
They evidently don't have enough brain power to look at the problem from every possible angle.
obama has been talking about this for over a year and he still doesn't have a well thought out plan? Christ, what does that say about his intelligence?
-
Should my AIRBORNE son have to return to the sandbox, the following will be my advise to him;
TAKE NO PRISONERS

This isn't going to end well. But then, we all knew that already, didn't we?

bitchslapped for sucking up to the new chick.
and being a DAT.

It's amazing, really. The local board's version of TominTib is now claiming (besides us all being racists for not voting for Obama) that most of the military wants Gitmo closed.
I swear, these people have developed a Stage-4 terminal case of the dumbass.

Apparently they want to move some of the detainees to Fort levenworth in KS. I heard on local news that the house and senate reps from KS are pissed. One of them was even quoted saying "Over my dead body." lol
Hopefully, they will stick to it.

Why the Gitmo policies may not change (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0109/17841.html)
Obama is playing the left like the complete tools that they are. He keeps this up and I may grow to like the commie -- never vote for him, but will appreciate his screwing his party over.

Well, nobody said The Exalted One wasn't a slick lawyer sumbitch.

You fuc*in' people... you have no idea how to defend a nation. All you did was weaken a country today. That's all you did. You put people's lives in danger. Sweet dreams.
