Well I missed a bunch working late and am about to miss a bit more as I brave the cold for booze and pizza.
Topics for thought:
- Blown call (delay of game) on the Ravens winning field goal drive.
- Fark em they blew plenty of chances?
- Arizona down early. Can they make a game of it?
- Early predictions for the Sunday games?
Well, I'm off for sustinance but I shall return!
-
I was a bit surprised by what happened in TN.
I look for Philly to upset NY, and the steelers to beat SD. the way my prognostication has gone lately, that is very good news for the giants and the chargers. :-)
-
well, Az just isn't scared of carolina at all, are they?

Nothing is scarier than a team with nothing to lose.
Go Cards!
-
Delhomme just got picked for the second time in the first half. and he fumbled. carolina is about to go into the half down at least 16
on edit : make it 20.

I had an opportunity to go to this game, but the packers extreme suckage this year pretty much put me off football for a while.

Yeah -- it was rough for the pack this year.

Yeah -- it was rough for the pack this year.
rough year? they stone cold sucked. the defense couldn't stop a ping pong ball, and aaron rogers is displaying, at least initially, and abject inability to come from behind in the closing minutes.

Cards are about 20 minutes away from playing in the NFC Championship.
As a native Arizonan, let me be the first to say...what the hell is going on here?! :thatsright: :-)
This is new for us, guys.

I was actually thinking about you as I watched the game. :-)
you never know, jen. warner is capable of really, really incredible things. I personally don't think that they can get past the eagles or the giants, but Az is making it fun to watch.

At least they are trying now, unlike the last 5 of 6 games of the regular season.

well, as I recall, they clinched their division before anyone else, and really couldn't improve their seeding in the playoffs no matter what they did. I can understand the letdown.

They were just reserving their energy for the playoffs apparently. That Whisenhunt guy...he's a sneaky one there.

Intercepted in the end zone. :rotf:

the cards have an almost uncover able receiver in fitzgerald. the guy is incredible.

I would have to agree.
Some yahoo in the neighborhood south of me keeps shooting off fireworks after every good move by the Cardinals. It's been kind of a loud evening.
I fear what will happen when the game ends.
-

Did you see his catch last week with two men covering him? He could be blind and deaf and probably still find the ball. He's very impressive.
-
OMG. Another interception. My neighborhood is about to be set on fire. :lmao: This is so bizarre.

that may be, but I am sure that it runs better right side up, and not on fire. :-)

The Cardinals radio guys are darn near stunned speechless. Not good for radio. :lmao:
-
this is a slaughter. the seats were empty in the background on that FG. even the folks in charlotte have left.
-

Meh. In a week, I may not need the car to go to work anyway. *simultaneously laughs, then cries*

- Arizona down early. Can they make a game of it?
Well. I've been regreting that line for a couple hours now. :rotf:
Even as I ran around town doing stuff and only had the game on the radio I hated the idea of that line being out there in the interwebs, lol. Anyway, I did return and stuff myself with pizza too boot. Way to go Cards! Glad one team from the NFC West could put on a good showing.

I only wish your play by play baseball guy got similarly speechless. the guy screams on pop flies, for God's sake. :-)

Well H5 for your Cards tonight. Hope they win a few more. (I got no dogs in this playoff fight so here's to the underdogs!)

They will surely be the underdogs next week. If they show up like they have been so far in the playoffs, it will be entertaining!
-
Yeah, you're old. :-*
yep. I fart dust.
-
Uh oh! They are coming back. 50 seconds is plenty of time for the Cards to blow it. :lmao:
-
and that's a wrap. congrats to the cards for knocking off the #2 seed in the NFC.
-
they did it on the ground; 150 yards to 75. and ToP was insane; 40 to 20 minutes.

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. At least TN didn't screw the pooch like they usually do.
Not bad for a ten-year-old football team.

Hass should be back next year. the seahawks should be a good team next year, although the loss of holmgren could be unpredictable.

It's New Year's Eve all over again. People are shooting off fireworks and their guns. Ah, the Wild West. :-)

I think they will be OK too. It was all I could do not to write them off on losing 6 WR's in the first quarter of the season, lol. Hass is good and if he has someone to throw too, even better. Walter Jones is HOF bound but sadly past his prime. I think if they draft or pick up a WR or two and help the O-line, Mora will get the defense back up to snuff. The run game showed some signs of life for the first time in years, hope the keep it.

I clearly had an edit problem in that last post. we are getting a delay here that I will look into. but heaven protect the celebrator that crosses you, jen. :-)

I think that the home teams will come through today. Next Sunday should see the Cardinals in a really cccooolllddd Giants Stadium, and the Ravens should be making their last stand in Heinz Field. Steelers and Giants in Tampa.
-
Arizona is still in this? Who the heck saw that coming?
Ravens beat the Titans. I do believe it's the Raven's year my friends. Scoobie -- how sweet would that be if the Ravens beat the Eagles in the SB?
:cheersmate:

Eli doesn't like the cold either.... and he won't have to worry about it next week as he will be watching it from home getting a lap dance from his trash wife while he licks oreos (he is in training with Peyton for the big SB oreo competition with the Williams sisters).
Since when does Jets fans root for the Giants? Isn't that sacrilegious in the football world?

Nope. This is the year of the underdog. Every team with a first-round bye gets smoked. I want all five guys on Fox to call it for the G-men, just like they called it for Carolina ( :lmao: ), then sit back and wait for the egg to land. :cheersmate:
Eagles-Ravens Superbowl: Birds of Prey vs. Birds of Ghey. :p

Christ, have you SEEN the prices for ammo in Arizona lately? I went to Cabela's with my father when I was in Phoenix. They want double and triple the going price for 12-gauge, assuming you can even FIND any 00-buck.

I haven't bought ammo since Obama has been elected. I'm kind of afraid to see what it's all going for. I stocked up at a gun show about a year ago and then my dad gave me a couple extra boxes of .38 specials that he didn't want anymore (sold a gun). So I have a nice supply should football celebrations or Obama's stimulus plan get out of hand. :-)

Eagles move on. The Giants choke.
It's all good people. :cheersmate:

I think AZ is much more worried now than had it gone the other way.
There is something about Philly that worries everyone.

Freaken Eagles D kicked ass if not for Mcslabs INTs and safety the would have only like 3 points
They are all going to pick the cards now. I hope the Eagles go in and smoke them :cheersmate:

The way the Steelers are going, it could be an all-Pennsylvania Super Bowl.

Cards game sold out in six minutes. The bandwagon doth overfloweth now.
-
Steelers were the only bye-week team to make it to the conference championship round, in either conference. Remember when it was said that the extra week off helped the tewam with the bye? Not so sure about that now. Eagles-Cards oughta be a doozy, too.

It's more home field advantage than a bye week that helps the team. What happened this year is that pretty much every single team sucks on a huge level.
The Raven's defense will take them to the SB, and will probably win it for them.

It'll be a defensive struggle, no doubt.

The NFL got screwed this weekend. The Cardinals are the turd in the punchbowl, and the only team with any real viewership beyond their region is the Steelers. If the Cards get in the SB, who cares? It's the Cards. The Eagles playing the Ravens would create a lot of excitement in the 90 miles between the two cities, and the Steelers playing the Eagles is the Pennsylvania Bowl.

It's been said Philadelphia teams have to score early in order to take their own crowd out of the game.

Please note that I do not condone what McNabb did here. It was stupid, cost his team a 3rd and 1, and he will probably get fined big for it.

Ravens vs Eagles....November 23, 2008....let's see if I remember these highlights correctly.....
McNabb, who tossed two interceptions and lost a fumble, was benched at halftime after completing eight of 18 throws for 59 yards.
Kolb....yeah, nothing much to say there.
Ravens blocked a punt for a safety.
Mark Clayton ran back a 53 yard catch, untouched, for a touchdown.
And of course who could forget Reed's interception in the end zone and sprinting for an NFL record 108 yards for a touchdown to put the game out of reach.
Ahhhhhh, good times, good times.

Hon, once the Eagles win the Superbowl, do you think we could spring for a nice display case for my autographed McNabb mini-helmet? :-) :-*

I think the Ravens' D can make quick work of Concussion Ben. The Steelers have mastered the art of playoff choking to such a degree that they could go on tour with the Yankees were it not for their one title.
ETA: plus I'm pissed the Steelers spoiled my all-underdog card. I hope they get creamed.

I don't have to check my gun at the gate because I am not stupid enough to pay $120 (that's the cheap seat!) for a ticket to see the Cards choke, which is what I suspect might happen on Sunday.
I'll watch them choke from the comfort of my recliner instead. It's free and I get to keep my gun close by. :-)

I do think Cards/Ravens would be kind of cool because you have the veteran QB against the rookie QB.
But I don't much care either way. I just like to watch the train wreck that is the Superbowl unfold...no matter who is playing. :-)

Ya gonna shoot your TV when Warner reverts to his Captain Interception ways?
FWIIW, I was at the SB in Atlanta for the pinnacle of The Greatest Show On Turf when and right across the field at the loge level when Bruce caught the winning touchdown.
After that they fell helplessly apart.

I want to clarify for my friends on here who are from Phoenix that it has nothing to do with your city. A little too hot there for me personally, but I like Arizona, the State is full of much natural beauty, and have enjoyed Phoenix everytime I've been there. I like Flagstaff and Sedona better, but Phoenix was OK.
When you got the Cards from St. Louis, I really felt bad for the city, not becuase you got an NFL franchise because you definately deserved one, but because you didn't get your own team, you got the Cards. Sorry, Phoenix residents, they're still the stinkin' Cards.

Oh, we know! True Phoenicians are making fun of the overnight Cardinals fans these days. True Phoenicians would die a little inside if they bought any kind of Cardinals apparel. :evillaugh:

FWIIW -- I will be rooting for AZ. I *despise* Philly -- a bunch of Oakland wannabees. When your fans' claim to fame is throwing DC batteries encased in snowballs and make the Oakland fans look tame, then you have entered the asshole zone. If I had to actually lay money down, I would bet on the assholes. But I ain't betting next cycle and am hoping Warner learned from the last few years.
And, FWIIW, Baltimore is the stupider version of Philly -- arrogant bullies who take as many cheap shots as they can and who get away with a lot. All the class and grace of Leon Spinks.

Only Overconfidence can beat the Eagles this weekend. The Eagles are 3 point favs. The Cards are going to go against a good D this weekend and if Mcnabb shows up its over for the cards

Best match-up for TV?
Steelers vs. Cards
Yes, after further consideration I've switched. Steelers are the only team left that has real broad nationwide appeal, so they have to be in it. But why the Cards? Let's look at the 4 possible match-ups. My viewpoint is to capture the attention of those who otherwise wouldn't watch, not those who are going to watch regardless.
Ravens/Eagles - Appeals to population in the Northeast and eastern part of the mid-West, but not to the South, Plains States, or the West.
Ravens/Cards - Appeals to portion of the Northeast and small portion of the West, but not to the South, the Plains States, majority of the mid-West, and majority of the West.
Steelers/Eagles - Appeals to population in the Northeast and eastern part of the mid-West, but not to the South, Plains States, or the West, with the exception being that the Steelers have developed a better product recognition than the Ravens which would mean a larger viewship.
Which brings me to...
Steelers/Cards - Appeals to Northeast, eastern portion of the mid-West, and small portion of the West, but not to the South, the Plains States, majority of the mid-West, and majority of the West, with the exception being that the Steelers have developed a better product recognition than the Ravens which would mean a larger viewship.
So briefly, the Northeast is covered either way, the South, Plains States, and mid-West will watch more with the Steelers in the game because of their product recognition, and the West does get additional interest with a team from their region in the game.

Steeler Nation is international. In Monterrey, Mx, there are several Steelers bars and no Cowboys bars at all (the Cowboys claim to have the Mexico market).
Go Steelers!
If it is Ravens/Eagles -- for the first time I might not watch the SB.

Extra Cheese: New York columnist takes shot at Philly
By Al Campbell
Inquirer Staff Writer
Legendary Celtics coach Red Auerbach used to signal a game was over when he lit up his cigar in Boston Garden.
In Giants Stadium, the fans get up and leave. When they started streaming for the exits Sunday with just under five minutes to go, with their team trailing the Eagles by only nine points, the New York faithless confirmed what we have known all along: The Philadelphia Eagles have fans. The New York Giants have spectators.
So what do New Yorkers do when they have lots of free time on their hands, time formerly spent following their Mets, Yankees and Giants in the playoffs?
If you're columnist Filip Bondy of the New York Daily News, you start swinging hatchets at Philadelphia.
On Wednesday, Bondy wrote:
"No matter where a New York fan turns these days, a vulgar scent of cheesesteak taints the atmosphere and distorts the schedule of sports events on our flat-screen televisions. Philadelphia is the new Boston, suddenly. Maybe not as prim and haughty, but every bit as dangerous and much, much sneakier."
The column bears the headline: "Forget Boston, we have new city to hate."
" 'Trashy people from either Philadelphia or the Southern region of New Jersey' is how Urbandictionary.com defines Eagles fans," Bondy adds.
Can you feel the love here?
You can return the love by reaching out to him at fjbondy@netscape.net.

:greet: The Eagles are clearly not the only ones in green... Mr. Bondy's eyes are green as shit. It's an honor to be compared to Boston and be the bane of New York. :cheersmate:

If it is Ravens/Eagles -- for the first time I might not watch the SB.
I felt the same way about Colts/Bears.
-
I read evrything over about the play-offs, even though professional football is about as interesting to me as watching paint dry.
As much as it grieves me, I guess I'm in favor of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles, an all-Pennsylvania Super Bowl.
Phoenix has no business having a professional football team, and the current Baltimore team is nothing like the Baltimore Colts had been.
Indianapolis, for God's sake.
No history, no tradition, no intensity of feeling, about these other two teams.
Geezuz.
So I'm for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles, although ultimately in the Super Bowl, I'll have to be for the Pittsburgh Steelers, out of sentiment.
The only professional football game I ever watched from start to finish was a game in which the Pittsburgh Steelers played, and Terry Bradshaw was their quarterback. I disremember why, as this was a long time ago, but on that basis, I'm for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Why?
-
Why?
Because authentic professional football, one associates with steel mills, coal mines, working class people, industry and commerce, smokestacks, railways, blue collar stuff--you know, those things that made America great.
Phoenix has a team just because, as with Tampa Bay, Phoenix is hip, Phoenix is cool, Phoenix is trendy, Phoenix is with it. In the popular perception, Phoenix beats places such as Buffalo, because of the sun and all that, but Buffalo contributes more to our national well-being.
It's about as silly as Denver having a professional baseball team.

I dunno; it's a national tragedy, and a symbol of our inner decline, the way old places have been deserted for new places, lightweight places stealing teams from solid sturdy All-American cities.
I mean, couldn't places like Phoenix or Denver or Oklahoma City or Tampa Bay or North Carolina or Tennessee, started professional soccer teams instead?

I'm with you there. They put it up to a vote in 1997 whether a professional football team should be brought here, and a new stadium built for them. I voted no but it passed anyway. And here we are. I don't know how much money the Titans have "brought" to the city, but the games seem to sell tickets and it's gotten to the point where they close a section of downtown during game night for the benefit of the pedestrian traffic.
Don't get me started on the hockey team or the convention center.

I can give you two business examples, madam, after which I have to hit the sack again for the fourth time today (bad cold).
For years, for decades, for generations, two of the most solid corporations in the commercial history of America, were in Omaha--Northern Natural Gas (later Internorth) and Northwestern Bell (telephones).
They made money heads-over-heels, and paid enormous dividends to old people and somesuch, assuring them a comfortable retirements.
Then the Texans came up here, and bought Internorth.
They moved the natural gas company from Omaha down to Houston, because Omaha was old hat, stale, boring, and Houson was hip, trendy, cool, with it.
You of course know that Internorth became Enron.
Then the Coloradoans came here, and bought Northwestern Bell.
They moved the telephone company from Omaha over to Denver, because Omaha was old hat, stale, boring, and Denver was hip, trendy, cool, with it.
You know of course Northwestern Bell became QWest.
This almost happened with the Union Pacific railway, the jewel in Nebraska's crown, when investors from the blue states and blue cities of the northeast purchased majority stakes in that company.
They moved this, the jewel in Nebraska's crown, from Omaha to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, because Omaha was old hat, stale, boring, and the northeast was hip, trendy, cool, with it.
Fortunately, that lasted only about three years, after which Nebraska reclaimed its crown jewel, which had deteriorated significantly while back east, and brought the Union Pacific back to its former robust health.
I've always been against moving things just because one place is old and stale and boring, and another place is hip, cool, trendy, with it.
-
So I'm for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles, although ultimately in the Super Bowl, I'll have to be for the Pittsburgh Steelers, out of sentiment.
Steelers/Eagles SB would mean the only people watching would live in PA. The rest of the country can just revert to their regular programming.
I don't much care who wins this thing as this really has been a horrible year for the NFL. Every team has just played piss poor football, and most teams have dealt with staggering injuries to their starting lines.
I would like to see the Eagles as it's Red's year -- Phils and the Eagles baby. He can die a very happy man.
I would like to see the Ravens as Scoobie is a die-hard passionate Ravens fan who also deserves to have her team win. The in-your-face taunting she can exact on her husband Red forever and ever makes it all worth the price of admission.
Actually we should all be rooting for Eagles/Ravens as the Red October residence will be the place to be, and blog live from that night. Who needs superbowl commercials when you have a couple who normally adore each other become bitter rivals over the span of 4 hours. They have children too. Ooh the possibilies..........

Oh, goody. More elitism. :hyper: I wasn't getting enough of it from our elected officials, co-workers, and yes, even my former church.
So am I to understand that anything south of the Omaha city boundary is deemed an epic failure and "American tragedy" in your eyes?
Geez, Frank. You go ahead and keep on clinging bitterly to your Union Pacific railway and freezing temps.
I'll try and "make do" in this lightweight city called Phoenix, with our January temps in the high 70's and sub-par undeserved sports organizations.
I did not realize I should be so ashamed of this city, the 5th largest one in the country. What a waste of perfectly good desert!

Well now, jendf, you know I like, even love, every bit of you.
But alas on this one must disagree.
This was before my time, but surely most rememeber that the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants were uprooted (1957, I think), and moved from stale old New York City to hip, cool, trendy, with-it, California.
This caused major convulsions in New York City, as the people there quite justifiably and reasonably thought they had built these teams to their then-glory.
The Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants had decades, generations, of being awesome baseball teams.....but once they became the Lost Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants, well, while they've had a few good years, on the whole they've barely been mediocre out there.
New York City still had the crown jewels of American professional baseball, the Yankees, but that has been small consolation, less than what New York City also had with the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants.....and New York City deserved to have all three glorious teams, not just one of them.
Ditto for the Cardinals, which were one of the top teams in professional football while they were in St. Louis.....and then declined into mediocracy in their new home. Or for the Colts, which were one of the top teams in professional football while they were in Baltimore.....and then declined into mediocracy in, for God's sake, of all places, Indianapolis. Indianapolis! My God.
It also needs noted that while the Dodgers were in Brooklyn, the Giants in New York City, the Cardinals in St. Louis, and the Colts in Baltimore, they NEVER imposed upon the local taxpayers as they have in their new homes. They went from self-supporting teams to taxpayer-subsidized teams, and that isn't good.
To me, it seems more fitting to build things, rather than taking from someone else.
Indianapolis could have made Monopoly into a professional sport, but no, it was easier and quicker to steal from Baltimore. Phoenix could have made snake-dancing into a professional sport, but no, it was easier and quicker to steal from St. Louis.
To me, it seems more fitting to build things, rather than taking from someone else.
Now you know, jendf, despite our difference here, I still like, even love, and respect you.

Oh, but madam, you missed my point; perhaps I didn't make it clear enough.
I never slammed Phoenix or its weather, other than simply stating the straightforward fact that it has no historic or sentimental attachment to professional football, and would probably be better off developing something more relevant to its culture.
Few things, once transplanted, do as well has they had done on their original soil.
I can't think of any professional sports team that has.
I can think of a few things better off where they're at now, as compared with where they had been--I'm sure there's more than only three, but I'm very happy the Stone of Scone, the Elgin Marbles, and the ancient Egyptian artifacts are among a people who care very much for them, as compared with the former owners.
But I can't think of any professional sports team that has.

I have to disagree with most of this. Check out the stats for Dodgers attendance, they are anything but mediocre and enjoy a very large fan base. Ditto for the Colts (and I hate the Colts).
Teams move to make money. Expansion teams (as you suggest Cities practice) is something that you can't just raise your hand and say -- hey, we are going to have a professional sports team here. It has to be approved by the powers-that-be. The NFL is not looking to expand, so buying established teams is the only option.
-
:puke:
Carry on.
Well now, madam, you know I don't pay much attention to specific professional athletic teams; I'm more curious about them as a cultural, sociological, and socio-economic phenomenon.
I call the New York Yankees the crown jewels of professional baseball simply because they're the best known team, and everybody has an opinion about them, good or bad. It's very difficult to find someone who doesn't care, good or bad, about the Yankees.
The New York Yankees are truly America's team; one can't say that about the Boston Red Sox or the Milwaukee Brewers or the Houston Astros or the Denver Diamondbacks or the Phoenix Rockies. All these other teams have their fans and non-fans, of course, but they aren't nearly as numerous, nor have these teams had the cultural (and historical) impact, as the New York Yankees.
I'm essentially neutral about the New York Yankees, but when up against one of those nouveau riche teams in places considered hip, cool, with it, trendy, I tend to prefer Old Money from stale old places, and so hope the best for the Yankees.
I'm not familiar with personalities of the Yankees, although one time several years ago when I was paying snippets of attention to them, I was left with the indelible impression that George Steinbrenner had the patience, the indulgence, the compassion, the charity, of a saint, while the now-late Billy Martin was fit only to clean the gold-plated washroom in the executive offices of Skins's island.....as the long-handled scrubber for the Wedgewood and Limoges commodes.
The only other person of prominence in professional baseball I've ever paid attention to was Tommy LaSorda, who always struck me as a gross obscenity.
If one were to put a gun to my head and demand that I name ten--just ten--current professional baseball players, I would be dead meat. I probably can't even name two or three.
-
Ditto for the Colts (and I hate the Colts).
Surely you jest, madam.
Indianapolis?
My God, surely not Indianapolis.
-
Few things, once transplanted, do as well has they had done on their original soil.
I can't think of any professional sports team that has.
(snip)
But I can't think of any professional sports team that has.
Edited to clarify.
Let me help you:
Los Angeles (formerly Brooklyn) Dodgers--One WS win before 1958, five wins since.
Atlanta (formerly Boston and Milwaukee) Braves--World Series win in 1995, five WS appearances, and until 2006, 16 divisional titles since 1991.
Oakland (formerly Philadelphia and Kansas City) A's--5 WS titles before moving to Oakland, 4 more since--and 2 more WS appearances.
Even the storied and hated Yankees, they of the 26 World Series titles, were formerly the Baltimore Orioles in 1901-02.
About the only team which HASN'T had the success they enjoyed prior to their move (and this should make freedumb2003 VERY happy) would be the San Fran (formerly New York) Giants, who have been to the WS 3 times (losing to the Yankees in 1962, the A's in 1989, and the Angels in 2002). While in New York, they won 14 pennants and 5 WS titles.
St. Louis Rams--No Super Bowl titles before moving to St. Louis. Two NFL championships, one in Cleveland, one in Los Angeles (pre-Anaheim).
Baltimore Ravens--Formerly Cleveland Browns. Won Super Bowl two years after moving to Baltimore. Cleveland remains one of six NFL teams never to have played in a Super Bowl game, the others being Jacksonville, Detroit, New Orleans, Arizona, and Houston Texans.
Speaking of Baltimore--
Indianapolis Colts--Won one Super Bowl when they were in Baltimore, one in Indy.
Tennessee Titans--Formerly Houston Oilers--Appeared in Super Bowl, losing to transplanted Rams.
Decatur Staleys--Became the Chicago Bears in 1921. I think we all know how they turned out.
Boston Redskins--Became Washington Redskins in 1937. Again, a storied franchise.
National Hockey League:
I'd get into this in greater detail, but aside from the "Original Six" (Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, and Chicago Black Hawks), virtually every major franchise has moved at some point or another. A few recent Stanley Cup winners:
Carolina Hurricanes--formerly Hartford Whalers
New Jersey Devils--formerly Colorado Rockies, formerly Kansas City Scouts
Colorado Avalanche--formerly Quebec Nordiques
Dallas Stars--formerly Minnesota Northstars
So you get my point.

As I will be preparing for my sojurn to the frozen wastes of Flatlandiuscornfedius (aka Iowa) that weekend, I want pics. Lots and lots of pics if this happens. I want newspaper clippings. Television news stories. YouTube videos posted and going viral.
To be in that household should it happen (but sorry Scoob, it ain't) would be worth any price just to witness the spectacle.

Which is why the Los Angeles market, second largest in the nation, currently has NO NFL franchise, despite having two MLB teams, two NHL teams, and two NBA teams.
Then again, were I a prospective NFL owner, I wouldn't want to park my team in any currently available venue in the LA area. They're either too small (Home Depot Center), not configurable (Dodger and Anaheim Stadium), or too crappy (Rose Bowl and Coliseum).
-
Thanks for the illumination, Sparky, sir.
Other than the abysmal post-New York Giants, I wasn't aware of much of this.
But now one is compelled to ask--how much do these teams in their new cities cost the taxpayers, as compared with when they were in their original cities (post-1957 and on)?
I'm under the impression--gotten from quickly reading the sports pages here and there over several years and a few decades--that teams in their original cities cost the taxpayers nothing even close to what they cost the taxpayers in their new locales.
I know, for example, that BadCat is paying a Hell of a lot more for the stolen Cardinals, than just the price of the ticket to see a game.
And even all these financial "incentives" are no guarantee--fans of the nouveau Cardinals, take note--I forget which professional sport it was, but didn't the taxpayers of Seattle agree to finance some sort of Pentagon-sized luxury stadium, and once that was passed and construction begun, the team moved to Oklahoma anyway?
-
You know what? the Eagles really suck.
Remember when the Pats killed this piss poor Cardinals team?
Lord what a waste of a year, an 8-8 team going to the SB. There should be a law against it.

Cards are in -- Warner had a QB rating of 147!!!!
That sag in the 3rd quarter will be noted closely by the winner of Pgh/Balt.
So far I am pleased. So is the NFL.

Have there been any other signs that the universe has come to its end?

That was a definate hook up, but there's no way we should've been fourth and ten to begin with.
I can't tell you how pissed I am right now. McNabb and Reid need to be gone. Time to clean house and rebuild.
-
Oh brother here it comes....
Don't worry, they'll hook up the Steelers. Again. :whatever: Hey look... "roughing the punter!" :lmao: :mental:
-
My frustation aside, congratulations to Jen. Under ordinary circumstances, I love to see a team like this do well. I'm happy for the fans who never get to see a winner finally get their due.
-
My prediction is the line will be Pgh +8
-
Polamalu running back that INT was the capstone.
If PIT +8 is the line, that should be a good one.
-
Don't worry, they'll hook up the Steelers. Again. :whatever: Hey look... "roughing the punter!" :lmao: :mental:
I must have rewinded that 10 times to laugh out loud on how bullshit that call was. Ridiculous.

I fully agree that that call was bullshit. Though, there could very well have been a couple of roughing the passer calls against the Ravens, too, throughout the game that weren't called.
-

Had the Steelers managed their clock a little better they would have scored. Total game changer on momentum. You just can't make bad calls like that in a playoff game.
Roughing the passer is a judgment call. Ben got slammed good though many times throughout the game, but that's football.
The Steelers will get another ring, as the team they are playing have been on borrowed time. Kurt Warner brought his team an 8-8 season, and through ridiculous circumstances punched their ticket to the playoffs. The game will be over by halftime, if not earlier.
How is that you are a Mets and Steelers fan?

Umm . . . The Cards' record, at last check, is 12-7 with their postseason wins, which would have made them 9-7 at the end of the regular season. As to how I'm a Mets' and Steelers' fan, I have zero expletive-deleted idea. (Just lucky, I guess . . . )
Also, according to FoxSports.com, the early line out of Vegas is Steelers +6 1/2.

My apologies, 9-7-- with every single other team in their division being well under .500. Come on. 9-7?

Not too long ago, the New York Jets won the AFC East with a 9-7 record, IIRC.

Look at the stats for the 2002 season -- those with a better record than the Jets got in to the playoffs. This year is insanely lopsided. Add insult to injury when the division games the Cardinals played were against seriously chump teams.

Now, lars, sir, you know I'm always in favor of the traditional, the tried-and-true, the historic, over what's considered hip, cool, trendy, with it, where it's at; the jazzy glittering lights and little firecrackers.
Actually I found myself in an awkward position.
I'm not a fan of professional sports; I think they suck.
College football is the only game in town, for me.
And then this issue arose, where I had to make a choice.
Unhappily, my only choices were the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers; both of them teams from Pennsylvania. The other two choices were nouveau flash-in-the-pan teams, liked only because they're new and cool, as compared with these old hats.
I never in my life favored a team, college or professional, from Pennsylvania; it's a family thing with the cousins, you of course know, they always being sore losers and poor sports. Really nasty ill-mannered people, sports fans who like Pennsylvania teams. Maybe not all who like Pennsylvania teams; I'm referring to the blood relatives here.
But my sentiments for history, tradition, stability are stronger than any dislike for the Pennsylvania cousins, and thus the Pittsburgh Steelers.
There's two things funny about this: (a) that I'm not even a fan of professional sports, and (b) that jendf thought I was putting her and her city down, when I was doing nothing of the sort.
A place can be a vibrant, energetic, world-class city without stealing a professional football team from some city that has less--there's plenty of first-rate world-class cities without a professional football team.
I'm sure that Phoenix has at least 500,000 reasons to be considered a top-of-the-line city, but having a professional football team stolen from a poorer place isn't one of them.
Next thing you know, they're probably going to steal a baseball team from somewhere.
Ooops.

... and sometimes the best QB in the NFL gets a cheap shot taken at his knee, laying the field for lesser teams to rise up and try their shot at the SB.
There should be an * after the name of the team who wins it this year, with notation "dude, this year really sucked all the way around."

Sorry coach it was a bad Sunday and a very shitty Monday :-)

I have a few thoughts, if I may.
I'll make it official: I won't be skipping the SB, and I'm taking Arizona. Of course I'm very sore about that loss, and I can't dwell on it or I'll get myself angry all over again. But I can hardly blame Arizona for that. The blame lies squarely on the Eagles, and I don't intend to forgive them for that until there's a new coach at the very least. And a new offensive coordinator, and an accurate QB, and a power running back, among other things.
But that's neither here nor there... Arizona is the team that made it from the NFC this year, and I'm pulling for them. You can say what you want about their regular season record, but I don't care about that. I like the fact that they didn't have the best record but still made it to the Superbowl. It shows everyone that on any given Sunday any team can beat any other team. They earned their berth and they made the most of it. The Eags shit on them on Thanksgiving, but that was then. This is the playoffs. Apologies to Jim Mora, but yes, we ARE talking about the playoffs. So what if Arizona was 9-7? What does the regular season mean when the playoffs begin?
Then people say "but this is 'bad for the NFL.'" Why? I think it's great a team can come out of nowhere and succeed. The team that wins advances, plain and simple. What, praytell, would be good for the NFL? Superbowl matchups selected by lottery? By fiat? I love to see the smarmy know-it-alls at the networks coronate a team before the game is even played, then get reminded why champions aren't crowned on paper. I love the underdog. It keeps the game honest. It gives everyone a reason to be a fan, not just the ones who happen to live near preferred teams.
So even though it came at Philadelphia's expense, I'm happy for the Cardinals and I'm glad for what they represent. I have faith they'll acquit themselves well.

And GO PHILLIES! When does spring training start? :evillaugh: :-)

2 feet inbounds and run until you are touched.

Yep -- I can root for anyone I want. Just because the ONLY smart decision L.A. has made is it won't allow the taxpayers to pay billions of tax dollars for winter entertainment. I hope Houston enjoys its 10-year tax hit.
And I have been following the NFL since 1969 and have been a Steelers fan since probably 1974 or so. So I can predict better than most of you and root for whom I wish.

Polamalu running back that INT was the capstone.

Also, for my money, college overtime has NFL overtime beat hands down

The hell they were. There were mobile -- but not running -- QBs. Big Ben slides in the pocket at least as well as Young. A "running" QB is more like McNabb or Cunningham in their early days.
Just look at Vince Young -- a true running QB who has languished in the NFL. Because NFL defenses KILL running QBs. He isn't and won't even be a force, and in a few years not even an asterisk.
You won't see the wishbone-T in the NFL (and don't even bring up the "wildcat" formation -- that was a cute gadget that has outlived its lifespan already). College ball sacrifices QBs since they don't cost a dime.
As for OT -- you would decide on a form of the game that is 1 in 100 or so?
Fine, try to put the silly sissy-sport "oh we get our chance too" rule in. Real men who understand Sudden Death will just laugh. I mean, is the tie-breaker in hockey or soccer any better? Maybe a home-run marathon in baseball?
God, when girlie-men get involved in sports everyone just wants to look away.

While it would be a tad unfair to suggest the Cardinals don’t belong in Tampa next week because, after all, they followed the rules and beat the Falcons, Panthers and the Eagles to earn the NFC championship, it also would not be an unreasonable thought to have. That they are the first 9-7 team ever to make it to the Super Bowl is the crowning achievement of decades of manipulation by men in gray suits who work on Park Avenue. Parity was created in the NFL’s Manhattan offices for the benefit of ineptly run teams like Arizona’s, for without it there are no trips to the Super Bowl for the Cardinals, only trips to the cellar.
Parity, also called mediocrity by many, long has been the NFL’s goal and now they have it. A team barely able to finish above .500 in the worst division in the game, one that shamefully embarrassed itself against the Patriots [team stats] last month, now is one victory away from pro football’s version of immortality.
Can they do it? Both President Obama and Bob the Builder would say, “Yes we can!†Don’t believe them.
Upsets happen, as the Patriots reminded us all in 2002 when they recorded one of the biggest ones in Super Bowl history over the St. Louis Rams, but if the Arizona Cardinals beat the Steelers that won’t be an upset. It would be a shame.
These are the same Cardinals who gave up 56 points to The Hated JETS! They are the Cardinals who were hammered on Thanksgiving by the Eagles, the same team Larry Fitzgerald defeated almost by himself Sunday afternoon. They also are the Cardinals who finished the regular season by staggering into the playoffs having lost four of their last six games too, but to be fair they also are the Cardinals who have won three straight playoff games, so attention must be paid.
http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/columnists/view/2009_01_20_NFC_title_run_stuff_of_dreams:_Cards_change_fortunes/srvc=home&position=also
Ron Borges if you will (you know the POS Boston sports writer who loathes Boston teams?)
While I do not think they should be in the playoffs, I guess it would be kind of delicious if they embarrassed big Ben and company.

Matt Cassel did a fine job this year running the ball. While he is no Tom Brady, he is no slouch either.

The thing that's great about college football is its utter unpredictability; anything can happen.
The greatest game in the history of college football had to be the Harvard-Yale game of 1968 (I think it was 1968). With 1:28 to go in the game, Yale led Harvard 28-14.
Harvard won that game, 31-28.
And surely one remembers a particular Ohio State-UCLA game (regular season, not the Rose Bowl) of the late 1970s. Ohio State was behind, by less than a touchdown, and there were but seconds, and 80 yards, to go.
Art Schlichter made four perfect passes during those final seconds, and Ohio State won.
With professional football, everything goes with clockwork precision, nobody makes any mistakes, and there's no upsets. Watching professional football is like watching a painter apply paint to a wall.
-

I don't know what NFL games you are watching, but this just isn't true. There certainly are mismatched games (the poor Lions anyone?), but for the most part once the clock starts it is anyone's game.
Some superstar college players don't make the cut in the NFL. The NFL is bone crunching intensity, not for the weak of stomach. Ditto for its coaches (Pete Carroll anyone?).
Apples and oranges. College ball is fun to watch -- heck, I like to watch high school football too. However, the NFL is it baby.
-
The NFL used to be good, but it's really dropped in intensity. You can't touch the QB, you can't touch the receiver, you can't closeline the runner, no helmet to helmet contact, no headslaps, no covering your arms with plaster of paris and beating the other player within inches of his life, etc....
If the NFL were to turn back the rule clock about 40 years to would be much better.
.

Ah, the Peyton Manning rule. No one can touch pretty boy Peyton.
I think it depends on which teams are playing. The Steelers and Pats are allowed to beat the snot out of each other, as I think they let the Ravens and Steelers do also. Two teams with hard hitting defenses are given more latitude.
-
It's all of the teams.
The Steelers won with the former rules in place, the Pats didn't. The Pats got stomped 51-0 by the Dolphins back when those rules were in place. So if anything the Pats have benefitted from the rules.

Yeah cause the Dolphins are the same team as they were back in 72. Pats too. :whatever:
Tom Brady has been slammed more times that I care to remember, he ain't no crybaby. Peyton on the other hand...... you do know when/how the don't touch Peyton rules were implemented right?
-
You don't look at these things the right way. You approach it from a "I'm a Boston sports fan" POV, so you automatically defend them regardless. There's nothing objective there. If Peyton were a Pat and Brady were a Colt you'd be singing a different tune.
There's a reason they're no longer called the Boston Pats, even the owner wanted nothing to do with that city anymore. Jim Plunkett was glad to get out of there and get to a team that had real men, and that was the 69ers before he went to the Raiders. Even the Pats of when Plunkett was there were more manly than they are today. Steve Grogan (Grogs) is more of a man than Brady is because at least he could take a hit without all the protective rules. If they were to switch places in time when they played. Grogan would make it today. Not so sure Brady would. He definately couldn't last 16 years.

What on earth are you talking about? They use to play without helmets too. You clearly have never watched Brady play -- he has taken his share of hard hits. Brady is a pocket passer, and a damn good one. Grogan ran the ball. Two completely different QBs.
I can't even believe we are discussing this after the hit Brady took to his knee at the beginning of the year. Did he whine about it -- hell no. Would Manning (both) and most of the rest of the league's elites whine -- hell yeah.
Please. For the record I am a homer. They don't make fair weather fans in New England.
-
You're defending him because he is a Pat, and that's all. You are incapable of critizing teams and players from Boston. I can admire someone who likes their teams, but some do it to the point where you know they refuse to see it any other way but in a way that compliments their team. And when it comes to teams from Boston, you fit that category.
Here, try and do it. Let's see you rip the Pats, Celtics, Bruins, and BoSox like they've never been ripped before. I'm betting you can't. I see you ripping Boston teams, we'll talk. Until you can do that, you're just a giant PR machine for Boston teams. I'm sure IRL you're nice and all, but people who are just going to defend teams from Boston or wherever regardless, I already know what they're gonna say before they say it, and I can find that anywhere. Nothing new. Dime a dozen.

Yes I do talk smack about my teams, but defending all the players makes me laugh out loud. Come see me during Red Sox season.
You made a comment that Brady is milktoast, and I have never seen it -- once. The guy has been slammed hard to the ground many many times, shakes it off and is back in the huddle. Comparing him to Grogan -- two completely different styled QBs is baffling.
You long for 1972. Ok -- whatever. The five yard rule came about because POS Polian and crybaby Manning/Dungy whined the Pats play too hard (that's right, they whined because our defense played too rough, whaaaaaa). The Pats don't play peewee football. The Steelers don't either. Miami sure as hell does, but what am I saying..... I am only capable of talking about the Patriots.....
Nevermind.
-
I just have to comment on how this conversation took the bizarre turn it did.
The Steelers won with the former rules in place, the Pats didn't.
Well, if the "rules" made the game easier than the Steelers should have won pretty much every single year since they changed them.
'Cept they haven't.
Owners change, teams change, and the entire dynamic of football changed making it more difficult to build winning teams with the implementation of free agency and the salary cap. Cowher and Belichick are cut from the same cloth in team building. Belichick excels at it.
I have no idea how we got from heaving hitting to you're a homer, but whatever. I enjoy watching NFL football very much, since I was a youngster. That isn't going to change because rules changed.
I was a homer when the Pats royally sucked too. As I stated, we don't breed fair weather fans in the Northeast.
-
Well, if the "rules" made the game easier than the Steelers should have won pretty much every single year since they changed them.
'Cept they haven't.
The rule changes made it easier for pansy teams not to get hit too hard. In doing so, it penalized the teams who did smash players into the ground. There's a few teams who survived nonetheless, like the Steelers and the Cowboys. Other teams who relied upon smashing the other teams senseless, like the Raiders, Dolphins, and Vikings, didn't fare as well. Had the rules not changed, these teams would likely have continued to do well given they had done very well under those rules.
It didn't take a bizarre turn, I just pointed out that you defend Boston teams regardless and the same players you criticize on other teams you'd praise if they were on your teams. And it's true, you do. All fine and dandy, but someone who does that isn't really able to objectively view circumstances. Someone like that who says "Ah, the Peyton Manning rule" would be saying "Ah, the Tom Brady rule" if Manning were on the Pats and Brady were on the Colts. I know with 1,000,000 percent that's what would happen, it's not even up for discussion.
My only point is the game was more fun 40 years ago when they didn't sissy it down and I wish they'd go back. Trying to tell me that certain teams are given more latitude doesn't mean anything. Until they can absolutely beat each other senseless with head slaps, and clotheslines, and plaster of paris arms where the players stumble off the field happy they're only 95% to the point of being Darryl Stingley, then it's less than exciting as it once was.
.

Peyton has quite a record for requesting rule changes, that isn't a Boston homer thing and by the way I never cared for the guy. If he was the chokemeister for Boston as he was for the Colts I would be calling for his head.
There is a significant difference between talking smack, and what you are alluding to. I have been very hard on Tom Brady since he hurt his knee -- his commitment to rehab a serious issue with me. That said, you (collective you) throw bombs at him and I will absolutely defend him. I am loyal to my team. We eat our own, but the protective line is drawn to outsiders. You attack what is ours, and you will get it back in spades. That is what sports forums is all about.
For instance, Red is pissed off at his Eagles for choking to a lesser team. He allowed some attacks, but there is a limit to that. Fast forward a week or so I remind him how McNabb choked yet once again in the playoffs he will hand me my head on a platter. Sports forums aren't for crybabies, and pointing out "you're a homer" is just silly. Of course we all are. There wouldn't be professional sports (and college sports) if there weren't those "dime a dozen" homers who are loyal to their teams.
It's all in good fun.
-

Nope, just not interested. Someone sees my comments, let it be known right now they're wasting their time playing that silliness, so just don't bother at all.

The rest of it Red --, did the NFL network start a soap opera?
Sheesh! :whatever: A woman always says "Show me... I promise I won't laugh." Then what does she do? She laughs.

Atlanta?
Do they have a football team?
:loser:
Don't laugh--somewhere in all my boxes of crap I've probably still got the bumper sticker from my college days which says, "Go Braves! And take the Falcons with you!"

I picked the chargers over the colts, steelers over the ravens & the cards over the eagles...
but I lost on the vikings, titans & falcons...
I've got the Cardinals beating the steelers in the SB ...
who's with me !!

Uh oh.
As much as it severely wounds and grieves the heart, John C., sir, we have to disagree on this one.

cardinals weakness's in the playoffs:
NONE
steelers weakness's in the playoffs:
1. special teams : their punter is TERRIBLE
2. kickoff coverage: non existent
3. offense: inconsistent , but good for a couple big plays
4. big ben sacked alot
now, look at how the steelers matched up against the 2 best offensive teams they faced this year:
#1: chargers
#2: colts
both scored a combined 5 TD's on them & the colts won the game without ANY running game of their own & nowhere near as productive offense or defense as the cards currently have
even the Titans scored 31 points on the steelers & rushed for 150 yards
forget about reg. season records & forget about the steelers good defense that looks great because of their CRAPPY opponents all too often this year & the cardinals are CLEARLY the better team...
ask yourself, is the steelrs defense dominating enough w/ just rushing 4 ??...the eagles wasn't & neither was the panthers w/ julius peppers ....
so then the steelres start to blitz 6-7 guys to try & shutdown the cards offense that is tearing them up, then BOOM, larry fitz, boldin or breaston light them up for 2-3 quick TD's ...
I don't see this 08 steelrs defense as dominating as the Giants last year, because the giants front 4 could not be stopped, whereas the Steelers can & has & the steelers will then hvae to leave Fitzgerald on single coverage &/or breaston, boldin or urbin uncovered to get to warner...
don't forget , kurt warner has been to 2 SB's, won 1 of them & been MVP 2x ...
the ravens pathetic offense w/ a rookie QB from delaware scored 2 TD's on the steelers D in a CLOSE AFC championship...imagine what kurt warner & fitzgerald wil ldo to them...
I honestly think the cards could blow them out, cause I honestly think this steelers team is a hair overrated & does not matchup well against the CARDS...

JCC put down the crack pipe. The cards D is their weak point. We scored 73 points on them in two games. If not for Jimmy johnson not double teaming Fitz the Eagles would be in the SB

They are going to kill the cards.

and you lost the game that counted Lars...
nuff said...
pitts is a joke...
they wouldn't be in the SB this year if Tom Brady didn't go down &/or if the colts, jags, titans & chargers didn't have meltdowns...
the steelers defense carries them & they are very good...but they are not great...
I've watched the Pats under two different HC's & dozens of different players, light this steelers D up for 15 years straight...
take away the steelers playing marshmallow teams 4 times per year in their own division(browns, bengals) & they are as good as the eagles perenially & thats a hair above 500 ....
pitts punter will either have a botched kick or he'll give the cards at least 1 great runback & great field position the whole day long...
this ain't the 1970's & gone are the days the steelers can get away w/ having baffoons on special teams & win a SB ...
-
the eagles offense was the number two ranked offense in the NFC & I think #3 or 4 in the NFL ..
the ravens offense was around 15th or so & they scored 2 TD's on the steelers D in the AFC championship during realtime, not garbage time like the majority of scoring the eagles laid on the Cards ...
the panthers offense was one of THE best in the NFL & the Cards picked them 5 times & held them to nearly a shutout...
the only team the supposedly great steelers D nearly held to a shutout , was the browns....
the chargers scored 24 points on the STeelrs D just 2 weeks ago, in 15 degre weather in pitts...
so I'll take the Cards defensive showings against the eagles & panthers as more impressive than the steelers D's performances against the chargers & ravens ...
the Cards offense will be on the field for over 1/2 the game & big bens offense ain't built to comeback after being down by 2 TD's ...
cromartie will handle Santonio Holmes & Hines Ward is hurt, the former eagles B. Hood will be able to cover him well & Adrian Wilson is to the cards what Polamalu is to the Steelers......
the cards running game is BETTER than the steelers too ...
steelers= overrated
-
My guess is the Steelers win there will be a plethora of excuses as to why they did, ranging from poor officiating to the weather. Same act, different team with this kook. Stand by to hear all the :bawl: reasons.

I have no idea what the hell the cardinals are doing in the super bowl. I swear, the NFL needs a BCS system. :-)

the Giants went 10-6 last year & won it...
the Cards are 9-7 & look better right now than the giants ever did ...
the Cards beat the eagles , the Giants didn't ...
the NFL playoff system is by far more accurate than the crooked BCS, who just picks the largest schools (ie: most money) & the teams they think are the best to represent the post season ...
-
... and sometimes the best QB in the NFL gets a cheap shot taken at his knee, laying the field for lesser teams to rise up and try their shot at the SB.
There should be an * after the name of the team who wins it this year, with notation "dude, this year really sucked all the way around."
Are you talking about what the Steelers did to "my" Bengals and Carson Palmer a few years back? (leading to Pitt robbing my Seahawks of superbowl glory in Superbowl # refs have heads up ass)

who's with me !!
I with you as far as rooting for em goes.
That has much to do with my hatred of the steelers as anything else though. (btw- how are ya JCC! lol welcome back to the CC sports thread)
Mostly I just wanna see a seven loss NFC West team hoist the Lombardi trophy and see what the "parody police" think about what they have wrought in bringing socialism to the NFL.
Never mind me... I'm in a mood... :evillaugh:

hey steel... how you doing !!
yeah, the NFL's socialism works great for them...
no competition
no taxes
tax payer funded stadiums (cept for the mighty PATS) ...
I will have to say, this years playoffs were a bit more exciting than recent years....
and I don't hate the steelers, I'm just kinda sickened they get held up as elite when they have CHEATED more than any team in NFL history (all 4 SB's in 70's being that they were juiced up when other teams weren't), whereas my pats gets beatdown because of a stupid video camera....
this 08's steelers team is close to being the worst 'team' I've seen possibly win a SB since the 00 ravens, who were actually ALOT better than this 08's steelers team ..
go CARDS
