ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- The Republican National Convention, cut back Monday because of Hurricane Gustav's arrival on the U.S. Gulf Coast, will resume a full schedule Tuesday, convention officials said.

President Bush, who was scheduled to speak Monday, will deliver his address via satellite at 9:30 p.m. ET Tuesday, officials said.
Tuesday's theme will be "Who is John McCain," officials said.
Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who ran in the early GOP 2008 presidential primaries, and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Democrat's 2000 vice presidential nominee, will deliver primetime speeches after President Bush.
GOP officials said the convention will still have an emphasis on helping those impacted by Gustav's passage through the Gulf states.
The decision to go forward with the convention schedule was made with the agreement of all Gulf Coast governors, convention officials said.
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Sen. John McCain's choice for vice president, is scheduled to address the GOP convention Wednesday night.

In the 1990s, Ayers was instrumental in starting the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, which was awarded nearly $50 million by a foundation to help reform Chicago schools. Ayers is now a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Obama and Ayers have other ties.
Ayers held a meet-the-candidate event at his home for Obama when Obama first ran for office in the mid-1990s. Ayers and Obama live in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood.
Ayers and Obama served together on the board of the Woods Fund, a Chicago-based charity that develops community groups to help the poor. Obama left the board in December 2002.
The new ad sponsored by American Issues Project says that Obama and Ayers served together ''on a left-wing board. Why would Barack Obama be friends with someone who bombed the Capitol and is proud of it? Do you know enough to elect Barack Obama?''

Thompson was the only adult running and I don't think he knew how to handle the children but he knew how to handle the press. I loved when he refused to raise his hand.

And that, for me, is something to be for.

it was different. there were a couple of minor republicans at the obamapalooza convention, but they were former republicans, and they were kinda screwballs to begin with. and they didn't feature them in prime time.
i mean, think about it. two election cycles ago, THIS GUY was their VICE-PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE. I mean, if we hadn't hacked all those voting machines in palm beach county, he would BE vice president right now. :-)
i think that is the power of having him speak at our convention.

If he goes back to his "gang of 14" style of governance whilst in office and Palin gets swept up in that, being the loyal Veep, should could loose the base out of the gate. But if McCain is seen as not-pandering-too-much to the NY Times/liberal side of the aisle then she has a decent shot. She seems really intelligent though so I don't think that will be an issue. Still, one never knows how an elected official will act once they are in D.C.

it's all a mater of one's perspective, and how that would change after the election. a senator probably believes in the preeminence* of the legislative branch of gov't, and acts accordingly. a president believes in the ascendancy* of the executive, and acts with that view primarily in mind.
the short version is that I am sure he would be a different kind of president than he was a senator.
*when I say "preeminence" and "ascendancy", and am merely referring to a "first among equals" relationship.

As the Republican party convention finally got underway for real, Thompson outlined to delegates why he believed McCain, his former rival in the 2008 White House race, should be elected the next US president.
"This is the kind of character that civilizations from the beginning of history have sought in their leaders. Strength. Courage. Humility. Wisdom. Duty. Honor," Thompson said according to excerpts of his speech.
He also praised McCain's reputation as a crusader against corruption and cronyism.
"While others were talking reform, John McCain led the effort to make reform happen always pressing, always moving for what he believed was right and necessary to restore the people's faith in their government."

i know! We only donated money to Thompson's campaign last year and he is showing so much passion tonight.. I hope Thompson is placed in some sort of speaking position with McCain's administration. The man can cut to the quick of any situation better than any other politico out there right now.

For the folks that missed it, some highlights from Fred's speech last night...
To deal with these challenges the Democrats present a history-making nominee for president.
History-making in that he is the most liberal, most inexperienced nominee to ever run for president. Apparently they believe that he would match up well with the history-making, Democrat-controlled Congress. History-making because it's the least accomplished and most unpopular Congress in our nation's history.
It is basically the same old stuff they've been peddling for years. America needs a president who understands the nature of the world we live in. A president who feels no need to apologize for the United States of America.
We need a president who understands that you don't make citizens prosperous by making Washington richer, and you don't lift an economic downturn by imposing one of the largest tax increases in American history.
Now our opponents tell you not to worry about their tax increases. They tell you they are not going to tax your family.
No, they're just going to tax "businesses"! So unless you buy something from a "business," like groceries or clothes or gasoline ... or unless you get a paycheck from a big or a small "business," don't worry ... it's not going to affect you.
