Yesterday I met a soldier
Yesterday I met a 30 year old soldier in the Atlanta airport who was stuck there overnight. He asked me for a light. Then he told me he's a Sargent on his 4th deployment who had been in Iraq and is now stationed in Kandahar. He had come back on a very short leave to visit his Dad in Virginia, but missed his connecting flight and was going to have to go back without seeing him. His Dad is in the hospital. He told me he didn't feel sorry for himself because he knows a family from Kandahar, the nicest family you can imagine, he said, who has much greater problems than his. He showed me a tattoo he had on his arm in Sanskrit that he got after his best friend stepped on a mine right next to him. He said, "I told him not to move, that I was going to run around a corner because I couldn't watch," after which he heard his friend blow up alone. It means "purity" he said. He was very skinny and told me about sleeping in foxholes and getting shot at. He was afraid Trump was going to get us into something bad in North Korea and he said PTSD care for returning vets isn't good unless the caregiver has actually experienced war and not just read about it in a book. He said after 12 years in the Army he makes only $40,000 a year. He had the kindness to ask me about myself, why I was traveling too. So it was a mutual listening session. We shared my last two cigarettes, said our names and shook hands, and then I walked to the Park n Ride bus back to my bubble of safety in this world.

Most "Sargents" I know with 12 years in are E7's or E8's who have no time for such nonsense like this. The only thing I agree with is the amount of tours, and that's because Obama never provided for his troops while in office, forcing frequent deployments. Ironically, such deployment rates usually means soldiers obtain higher ranks in relatively short enlistment times, though it plateaus at E-8.

There were no cancellations at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson yesterday.

Yeah, I think this :bouncy: -tale is less than dubious. Here's two other doubtful points:
He showed me a tattoo he had on his arm in Sanskrit that he got after his best friend stepped on a mine right next to him.
A Caver with military experience can set me straight, but if this guy was "right next to" his buddy when the mine went off, I think he wouldn't be in Atlanta telling this tale.
Second, Sanskrit is an Indian language, nearly dead as a primary language, and mostly used in the Hindu religion. I don't think it would be in use in Afghanistan, especially not as a religio-philosophical symbol.
Neither are hard proof this :bouncy: -tale is fauxny, but they are significant incongruities. Just as the lack of cancellations at Hartsfield-Jackson is an incongruity.
-
He had come back on a very short leave to visit his Dad in Virginia, but missed his connecting flight and was going to have to go back without seeing him.
Must have been a awful short leave. There are multiple flights daily leaving Atlanta for Virginia. Plus most airlines will do anything for military in uniform on leave.
He said, "I told him not to move, that I was going to run around a corner because I couldn't watch," after which he heard his friend blow up alone.
Bullshit. That's left wing liberal pansy ass talk. If you are deployed, you are going to do "WHATEVER" is within your power to help your battle buddy. Never "I can't watch" crap.

This DUchebag needs a crotch punch.
I award this bouncy no bongs. We are all DUmber for having read it. At no point did this bouncy ever come close to a point or reality. May satan have no mercy on this DUchebag's soul.

Hasn't smoking been completely banned in all airports?

Most people stop having imaginary friends once they turn 7 or 8. :loser:

Ever wonder why they feel the uncontrollable urge to lie like that?

Completely outside the terminal, depends on the airport.

I am the person who wrote this on DU. I registered on conservative cave to tell you, respectfully, that this soldier also had no words of praise for Obama's support for Vets either. But he was tough as nails, and a complete gentleman. I'm a 50 year old woman and he could have been my son. I looked at him with those eyes Since his Dad was in the hospital, near the end, they gave him a 36 hour leave. There is a bench smoking area on the north side outside Hartsfield Jackson where we smoked. He missed his connecting flight which wasn't cancelled. It wasn't a political conversation that he and I had. In fact, I wrote it because I think most people without family in the military don't realize the sacrifices men like him make and how little they are paid or taken care of by our government. Yes, I'm one of those people that you probably dislike, and while I have no wish to receive a "crotch punch," I would like to engage in real, civil conversation with fellow citizens of this country to see where we might agree. for example, agree with Trumps stance on parts of Title IX. It's a shame that we have come to point in this country where we automatically hate and distrust each other. I don't know any of you, or what you've had to deal with in your lives, but I'm not going to stop talking to strangers in order to better understand.

And it was just so great (fit your favorite political narrative and views) you just had to run and post it at the DUmp so the dregs of society could feel better about their ****ed up lives?

I think everyone's life is sometimes f'd up. I did it because I felt admiration for him, I couldn't get him out of my head. I wanted people to give to the USO or something, do something, because these guys on so many deployments and their families are really putting it on the line for all of us and they shouldn't be ignored.

So you posted the story to a website full of "people" that loathe the military, and the country they serve?

Well I thought there would be no point in telling people who already support soldiers. I was trying to get them to hear his voice. If you look at it on that site you can see there are several Vets on there that reply, so maybe not everyone on DU has the same experience or feelings about the military.
-
A Caver with military experience can set me straight, but if this guy was "right next to" his buddy when the mine went off, I think he wouldn't be in Atlanta telling this tale.
I don't believe that's what he said. Remember it's already second-hand when the DUer hears it, of course. Bounding mines 'Set' when stepped on and then fire a small charge which blows the actual mine out of the ground when the pressure is removed from the trigger, then the main part blows up about four feet above the ground. He's saying the soldier he was talking to baled on his buddy, the buddy who froze on top of the triggered mine and then apparently tried to jump away once the soldier in the airport was out of sight around the corner. Now if you're not under fire or under other urgent pressures, it's not a hopeless situation, but it takes balls of steel to both stay frozen in place and for your buddy to dig out around the mine and immobilize the actuator until you can both boogie, and of course if you screw it up you could both get killed instead of just one of you.
Second, Sanskrit is an Indian language, nearly dead as a primary language, and mostly used in the Hindu religion. I don't think it would be in use in Afghanistan, especially not as a religio-philosophical symbol.
Mostly it'd be in Arabic, maybe it was and the DUer just doesn't know the difference, but to the SE, Afghanistan runs up against what was once colonial India so it's not impossible. Plus it was the soldier who had the tattoo done, somewhere, and for whatever obscure reason of his own, he might have chosen to have it done in Sanskrit. Hard to say.

Well thanks for your support, as for the other denizens of DU, I have ZERO respect for them, we've been reading their views for years and they are indeed a despicable bunch of "humans".
Maybe in the future, you could support the troops by NOT voting for politicians who continually cut their funding. Do not support politicians who vote to go into a war, and then three months later, pretend they didn't and come out against it. Do not support politicians who withdraw prematurely (tactically, not sexually) giving rise to enemy organizations like ISIS and essentially wasting every American life lost in the conflict.
Doing that would indeed show your support for the troops.

He told me the tattoo on his forearm was in Sanskrit. There's no lie there. I'll admit that when he told me about the mine (I'm a woman with no experience in the military), what he actually said to me was that he had told his friend, who was having problems with his wife, that he was going out into a dangerous situation and his head wasn't in the right place. He felt something bad was going to happen to him. Then he said he was near his friend and went around the corner because he just couldn't face seeing him get blown up. He felt bad about it. He did something in a split second and he felt sh***y about it. Anyway, all of this was in the context of us talking about male/female relationships and how hard it is for people on the battlefield when they are having marriage problems.

Fair enough. I agree with everything after your "Maybe in the future..." I've been on DU since 2004, but rarely post. Some are jerks, some are people I respect. I don't bunch them all together, just like I don't bunch conservatives all together. Who was the best candidate for supporting Vets and for not getting us into war in your opinion, going back to the primaries? I thought on the democratic side it was Bernie.

Didn't say there was. It could've really been Sanskrit, or he might think Arabic script is Sanskrit. Soldiers don't always know what they're talking about, just like anybody else. Sanskrit looks like this, Arabic is so common there isn't any need for an example.

The whole "right next to his buddy" thing is Hollywood level cliche. Even if his "buddy" had a deathwish and belly flopped onto the damn thing he wouldn't have come out of that without a scratch. As for the "short leave" that's just a load of bullshit. If he was on deployment it would have been his midtour leave which is typically two weeks long if he is going to take the trouble of flying back to the states. So the two most likely scenarios are:
1. The OP is lying
2. The OP met one of those Stolen Valor jackasses
-
I know it's a thing here to insist that every DUer is lying their ass off all the time. As far as the regulars go, there are some for which that's true. Aside from them, and some GoFundMe leeches and attention whores, though, most of them are saying things as they understand them, based on the facts (Or, more often, fake facts and BS propaganda) as they picked them up. I don't personally believe most of them are anywhere near as bad as their megaposters.
ETA - of course, at least 10% of the high posters are moles, and probably a quarter of the membership has been banned over time for either having a few too many lucid moments, stepping on boobytrap like pissing off the fembots and the gay mafia, or checking the wrong block in a poll.

I am rather curious as to where in Virginia he was trying to go.
I'm also curious about sleeping in foxholes in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Welcome to CC. You might find we are not the illiterate, deplorable ogres that your kind paints us as. Most of us here are pretty nice folks. Some are a little rougher around the edges than others but all would stop and change your tire in the pouring rain if you had a flat. Your kind would not. Your kind consider us "the enemy". Their words, not mine.
Having said all that... sorry. I just do not believe all of your story. You may have met a soldier at Hartfield and you may have had a conversation. The rest? Probably not.
Have a nice day. :cheersmate:

Alternatively, C'tita may have related more or less accurately what was said and done, but the one spoken with was a pretender. The "Stolen Valor" phenomenon is sadly real, and some folks here have both seen it and have the first-hand experience to shred a pretender. Others know enough of military matters and weaponry to spot possible "errors" in a story.

Could be... never thought about that. :cheersmate:
I do not pretend to know things on military matters. I leave that up to the ones here that are career military. I would imagine though that if one's parent is dying that one would get more than 36 hours leave. Unless the russians have invaded the east coast I would think that the US Army could spare one soldier for more than 36 hours. That is just me. Could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time.
According to ex I was always wrong so I am used to that. :-)

I know you aren't illiterate, deplorable ogres (although it was fun to type that). I have plenty of people in my own family who are beloved, brilliant conservatives. I've been helped by strangers plenty of times of all stripes and tried to do the same for others. Yes, there are people on DU who use the word "enemy" and its a shame. I guess we could experiment an go on this site and that one and count/compare the insults on any given day towards the "other side" and it wouldn't be pretty. Honestly, when I look at this site and that one, I see a lot of similar behavior, which is why I don't post there much.
I talked to him because I think our country would be in better shape if we talked with each other, even if it is hard. No one enjoys being called a liar or a dupe, which is what many here think of me -- nor do many enjoy having something they wrote copied and taken to another place where people they don't know make fun of it. But at the same time, I appreciate your honesty, which is hard to come by these days.

One thing you WON'T run into here, unlike DU, is being thrown out for saying the wrong thing, supporting the wrong people, or picking the wrong option on a poll. People don't get banned for what they think or say, short of going really over the top vile. You seem pretty civil and literate, so - to borrow a phrase from DU that means something entirely different here and in this context - enjoy your stay!

Hi Jukin, cute dog. I'm the one you wished satan would have no mercy on. I'm a mother of twin boys and have lots of other people at work who depend on me, plus my husband and two dogs (Oscar and Lola). I've volunteered for 10 years at the local school too, and never laid a hand on anyone. Do you still think I need a "crotch punch"? I hope not. It would interfere with my chocolate-chip cookie baking.

Welcome Chiquitita. As DumbAss Tanker said, you won't get the banhammer for saying the wrong thing. I read posts over there, and there are some nasty, vile individuals over at DU. Some even went as far as wishing harm on the president and his family. I did not like Obama as president, but I NEVER wished him harm nor his family. Enjoy your stay here. :cheers2:

Wellll....most DUmmys do need one of those. I found/find it hard to believe much of your story. Generally, I do think most DUmmys need a crotch punch. I am glad that you came over and introduced yourself. You maybe an exception to that rule.
As to the last bit, that is a slightly modified quote from a Sandler movie, which I find funny. Not having known you and thrown you into the general populace of that particular asylum I couldn't really say "and may God have mercy on your soul." That is the end quote. I have just seen too much true hate and poison from the DUches. I think may people on this site maybe better than me. I grew up in the barrio and fought for everything I have achieved. I very much do not take kindly to the wastes of life at that site. I am a believer in the golden rule with a twist. I treat people as they treat me only a bit more in either direction. I do NOT turn the other cheek, I bloody the the guy that has harmed me or mine.
-
There's a lot more to you than that, but, just curious, what were you doing at the airport? You live just north of there, coming back from Wisconsin? You sound like you were traveling alone and I don't about you, but when I reach my final destination, I can't wait to get the hell out of the airport.
Anyways, welcome, or should I say, Hola.

For some reason talking with you feels authentic. I didn't take offense, really, although it stuck in my mind that you wrote that. It's just so out of my experience to have someone say that to me nowadays, but in reflecting back, I did punch another girl in the stomach when I was younger for bullying a friend and it worked. I taught my own kids to punch back at bullies in school, even if they got in trouble, rather than telling the teacher. I really like Adam Sandler in Water Boy, but I don't think I saw the movie your quote comes from. I'm sure a lot of people had it easier growing up than you, including me. I started working in eighth grade cleaning a lady's house, then moved on to waitressing, and finally teaching. But I never had to deal with anything really bad. You gotta fight to protect your own. I try to widen that circle when I can, but sometimes it's too costly.

At the risk of giving too much information I was heading home after visiting a loved one in Chicago. It was a stressful time, I had a long drive home ahead and I just wanted to enjoy a cigarette before the next leg of my journey. Why the third degree and how did you connect me to Wisconsin?

I try to widen that circle when I can, but sometimes it's too costly.
Well I have to say you are civil so I will be civil with you.
I was mowing lawns and pulling weeds at ten. I had a single mother so that money went to her and I to survive. This was the 70s so white people didn't get gubmint benees... not sure they do now. I don't resent my childhood because it made me who I am but it was hard being the one white kid and I was in a fight(s) almost everyday.
My gripe with the DUches is they don't try to get out of their situation. They blame others and want to steal from them. I went the other way of working hard, studying hard, and not just saying I'm smart but actually acting smart. I'm now in moonbat central and have friends/acquaintances that had great childhoods and lives because of their parents. I get they have guilt. I do NOT so I put up with zero shit with them. I've been told I'm fun (still get invited to parties) but we don't talk politics because I don't shut up and win the debate or shut it down when they walk away.

Hey, you guys can take the blondes and red-heads; they're a dime a dozen, very commonplace.
<<<will take a classy brunette any time.

Thanks for the welcome. :cheersmate:
You will find that the folks here are pretty tolerant. Just so you know we have had some denizens of the dump come over here from time to time to educate us illiterate, knuckle dragging, racist neanderthals. And most scurry back to the dump when they find they they are the ones that need an education. It typically goes like this:
1. Dummie comes over and is fairly nice at the start. Hospitality is given by us
2. Dummie then tries to insinuate that they are superior, lords it over us that we are intolerant, etc
3. Dummie gets ass handed to him/her/it
4. Dummie runs away.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying you are one of those types. Just saying that history shows that most dummies are the intolerant, egotistical, selfish jerks and the ones that come over here soon find out that we will challenge them with facts.
You seem to be fairly rational and I think you would make a fine addition to our little corner of the internet. I just wanted you to be aware that you will be challenged on any preconceived notions you may have of us and you will be challenged hard. This is not an echo chamber. :cheersmate:

Brunettes are better than all the rest. Not a fan of blondes myself, either.

Could be... never thought about that.
That all depends. Orders (travel orders and such) are orders. Can they be modified? Yes. There is a procedure for that. It must be followed or, you are missing movement which becomes UA then can also become desertion.
Quote from: Chiquitita on April 28, 2017, 08:28:30 AM
It was American Airlines. They told him it was his fault he missed his connecting flight. I asked him wasn't there another flight he could get on. He was on 36 hour leave and there wasn't enough time, plus weirdly the USO told him they didn't help with travel.
The USO has NO authority to modify travel orders or leave time. The only civilian agency that can possibly modify orders (I think) is the Red Cross and there are numerous hoops to jump through for that.

At the risk of giving too much information I was heading home after visiting a loved one in Chicago. It was a stressful time, I had a long drive home ahead and I just wanted to enjoy a cigarette before the next leg of my journey. Why the third degree and how did you connect me to Wisconsin?
 You don't know who you're talking to. But, ....? Tess does. :rotf:

Coach, Mrs. Jukin is a brunette and I am very happy.

The flight time alone is about 15-20 hours from the Middle East to Norfolk on a commercial flight. On a MAC it's much longer. I've done both. How would this individual ever get to actually see dear old dying Dad when you throw in the time to go through customs, TSA, check-in, etc. if he was on a 36-hour pass? I smell BS.
-
.....and how did you connect me to Wisconsin?
Because of the anti-social, seditious natures of most of the primitives on Skins's island, it's necessary for decent and civilized people to keep tabs on them.
Of course, it happens that not all primitives are that way, destructive elements in our society, and if they prove not to be, they're left alone.
The primitives, through their vigorous stalking, probably know more about franksolich than I do about any one of the primitives; some of them probably even know my shoe size, how much money I have in the bank, what languages I know, the cost of the last automobile which I purchased, that I tend to use Elizabethan curse-words in real life, how I sleep, what foods I like and dislike, my discreet preference for brunettes, &c., &c., &c.
The internet's no place for anyone who wishes to hide something about oneself. I learned that with a vengeance.....from the primitives themselves.

Thanks for saying this. Since 2004 when I started reading it, I have seen a lot of interesting people on DU leave after a while. I would hazard a guess that people go on the site looking for conversation and see that it's not really for that (although there are some authentic and I think decent conversations that take place). That it's meant as a platform for certain ideas.
-
Welcome Chiquitita. :cheers2:
Wishing someone harm is despicable, agreed. I really can't stand jokes about Trump's hands, hair, or other body issues either. That level political discussion is pointless and harmful. I think of the old folks when I was a kid growing up, and what they'd think of what we openly say now. They'd be disappointed. What you get banned for (or ignored) at DU is challenging set preconceptions. None of the big posters there liked my post. Mostly it was people in the military who replied.

It's good of you to go those parties and debate, in my opinion, because the viewpoint of someone who grew up as the one white kid in the barrio working from the age of 10 is something most people really do not take into account, and should hear.
From what I have experienced in life, people who have had it really hard have to do things way out of their comfort zone and really push themselves to get somewhere better. Children born into relatively well off families don't have much of a problem moving in the world and getting themselves into better situations (that's the world I live in). If they already come from a childhood with parents in a decent situation, they do have to work to stay where they are or move up, but the hurdles aren't super hard because they (me) have a lot of people to give them advice and help along the way.
I don't really know any of the people at DU in real life, so I don't know what their work life is like. I do know a few people in the housing projects we have in my town, kids mostly, and their lives are pretty damn hard. If they don't have a healthy parent, it's an uphill battle for them just to not be angry all the time.

So far what I have learned here is: this is a good bunch of people willing to engage with a stranger from the other side. You are hospitable and funny. I probably won't show up much after this thread though because I'm supposed to be working on a project and not hanging out on the internet. One thing I'll also say, everyone who has written to me here after I introduced myself, with the exception of a couple of minor teasers, has been smart and kind.

Appeals to my brunette vanity aside, you seem to have a naturally flirtatious nature, which must make you great fun to be around. I'd tell everyone all about myself to save them the research, but it's pretty boring stuff unfortunately. No great acts of valor on my record, unlike that soldier, who, I still maintain, was telling me the truth. Funny that his conversation with me, brought me into conversation with CC. I guess I owe him one.
-
A belated welcome from me as well. I probably would have posted this yesterday AM, but I was volunteering at a marathon. Don't worry about having a "boring" life. I had a now-late uncle by marriage who had an "exciting" life: he survived the Bataan Death March and POW camp in the Philippines, was transported to China, and survived in the custody of Unit 731 at Mukden.
Don't be scarce. Not all discussions here are political or about DU-folk. ETA: BTW, if the guy you talked to was not all he said he was, that does not make you a "dupe". Your knowledge and experience, like everyone's, is finite.

Welcome! :cheersmate:
Chiquitita, you and I know
How the heartaches come and they go and the scars they're leaving
You'll be dancing once again and the pain will end
You will have no time for grieving
Chiquitita, you and I cry
But the sun is still in the sky and shining above you
Let me hear you sing once more like you did before
Sing a new song, Chiquitita
Your first ^5 is from me

Looks like Frank's valve job* is working just fine.
But seriously, any sane person, unless blind, must agree she's gently aesthetic.
*reference to replacement of a cardiac valve, which was a stellar success, much to the joy of the primitives; franksolich still lives.

Hmmm, she must not like to smoke in her car. Thirty-six hours to go all those thousands of miles seems unreasonable and AA telling the guy it's his own fault he missed the connection? Did he fall asleep during the layover?
But this blonde does think that brunette is very attractive, and she looks young enough to be WilliamRiversPitt's daughter, even though he is almost a decade younger than her.
-
With no reference at all to Chiqui, if I shaved my (white) beard I'd look 5 or 10 years younger than WRP.

My husband was deployed in 2013 and was pretty stressed wondering if he was going to get paid due to the shut down. Marital problems happen to a few but when you are in a war zone and wondering how you are going to keep a roof over your dependent's heads can get you killed just as fast. Thankfully during my deployments (got out in 2009) that didn't happen.
