This would have been more fitting in the guns forum had it not been for the priceless bellowing from our precious neanderthals.

"Gun silencers are hard to buy. Donald Trump Jr. and silencer makers want to change that."
<snip I cut article out since it's just a paste from the link below>
In the video, after he’s shown shooting several guns with silencers, Trump Jr. says they can help with getting “little kids into the game.”

1. Completely asinine...
Here's a suggestion for these morons...ear protection! Never go to the range without it! But that wouldn't fill up the coffers of a gun industry, would it?

19. Silencers will limit the number of witnesses in shootings. Cops need to
have some input in the debate.

If it's silent more people will stay grouped together unaware they are easier targets.

Just wondering......
OH, and "silencers" are also a gateway drug, as indicated next

12. Next up: easy access to fully-automatic firearms.
The silencer issue is indicative of just how good pro-gun militants have it in this country. They have easy access to most firearms, ammunition and a wide variety of accessories. Now they want and will apparently get unchallenged access to silencers. Next on their list: adding machine guns to their collections, without the pesky federal regulations which have kept prices for such weapons high, and which have kept violence involving such legally owned firearms at virtually zero for decades. Keep the foregoing in mind, the next time some Gun Enthusiast starts caterwauling about how persecuted gun owners are in this country.

they would know a thing or two about the use of earplugs and noise-canceling headphones.
The sickos are just trying to help out their organized crime buddies and gun manufacturers.

30. They are only good for 30 db
In combination with a suppressor you get a gun shot down to 100db - much better for protecting one's hearing, don't you think?

31. No.
The decibels will not be constant, will naturally vary with the environment: louder in an empty cavern and softer in well-insulated living quarters. Add some extra "padding" to a silencer like a pillow around the barrel and it may be next to inaudible.
The hearing argument is just a lame excuse for more gun stealth and gun lobby profits which will inevitably lead to more murder and mayhem--already at unconscionable levels and unnecessarily so as statistically proven by multiple countries that know better than to cultivate a deadly gun culture.
It goes on almost endlessly like this, no point bringing it all over.
I'd challenge any of them to stand anywhere 89degrees north side of a suppressed anything without ear protection.
For cavers who've never used them, suppressors basically just take the "crack" out of the shot. It does muffle the lower htz a little as well, but most of the benefit is from BEHIND the muzzle.. ie: where you stand when holding it. Break that point in front of the barrel anywhere, and you will realize just how damn loud they still are.
Using sub-sonic ammunition greatly reduces the shock wave as well and makes suppressors more effective by multiple factors as well, that part is true.
All that said, it doesn't make the DUmbasses comments any less comical.

What?

What?
huh?

I always thought that a silencer might come in handy if you were forced to shoot a gun in a confined space like a small room or from inside the passenger compartment of a car.
-
Remember. Much of what they know of gunzzzz and silenzzzzzers comes from movies and "Man From U.N.C.L.E." reruns.
-
IIRC , The DUmmies favorite show, The Mythbusters did an episode on silencers. They still wore hearing protection even when firing the guns fitted with silencers.
Stupid DUmmies.

I didn't bother going over to that thread to lower my IQ but it is fairly easy (and quite illegal) to make your own supressor so the thought that murderous criminals would be flocking to buy suppressors is kind of silly. To make my point, can anybody point to any mass murderers who have used suppressors? Didn't think so.
-
I find it interesting that the party against any personal responsibility for actions would expect people to take personal responsibility for their hearing.
-
We are expected to believe that Liberals are buying guns in record numbers. But libs are concentrated in states when gun regulation makes it impossible to really get a decent gun.
I would have expected better conversation over there if gun ownership was suddenly approved.
Certainly California ought to be stocking up if they intend to secede.

None, that I recall. No pillows have ever been found at any mass shooting scene. :whistling:

I have noticed a surprising abundance of them on wilderness living reality shows like Life Below Zero. I can see some great advantages to hunting with them, particularly if you're hunting for your winter meat or trapping, I guess the $200 and paperwork aren't as big a barrier to purchase if you're counting on it for the edge in getting your Winter protein stocked away.

The pillow thing is not all that uncommon in premeditated domestic homicides, though.

Actually they can't even get the terminology correct. It's really not a silencer, but a suppressor.

And even better, I'll be able to buy a SILENCER for it!!!!!

I've heard rumors that some Walmart stores sell guns but none around here do. We only have one chain store, (http://www.ruralking.com/) that sells guns, otherwise you have to go to a gun store.

Our Walmart sells them - not a big selection. But of course, I was ****in' with the DUmmies about the fully auto BAR, but they'll believe ANYTHING.

So does our WalMart--they usually have a couple of Ruger and Henry .22LRs there. Inexpensive.

There's a chance that some of the Walmart's in smaller towns around here might carry them.
Really sad since I can remember when Sears, K Mart, Walmart, Montgomery Ward all carried guns.

Well, if they made a silencer that would hush a full auto BAR, I would for sure want one.

I recall my dad telling me he used to see wooden barrels even in the Ace Hardware when he was a kid, piled full of 1903's... pick one for like 10 bucks or something.
Oh, how we have fallen

The two in my area have a small gun selection. But we are rural for the most part. Funny how I could tell that we were in a country area by looking at the magazine racks in the local grocery stores. Our old house it was rap and black hair magazines, here its guns and hunting.

There is a store in Easton PA (Sarco) that sometimes has "Barrel O' Mausers" Not 10 bucks but something like 3 for $150.00

What chambering? My dad has an old war trophy that my uncle brought back from the ETO, which my dad then had rebarreled to .30-06. He also had the new barrel cut to a carbine length, and had a Mannlicher-style stock installed (which cracked around 1980 or so).

I will check next time I go there which is not often. I'm not a Mauser fan but what I saw looked like standard (and somewhat beat up) military issue, what ever caliber that is. The last time there wasn't much good in the barrel, at least to my eye but I'm told you by others that sometimes you can do well. They also have a bunch of 20th century military rifles in good condition but at a higher price.
Anyway, I want a nice condition 1903 Springfield 30-06 and Lee Enfield 303. I have a 1917 "American" Enfield in 30-06 that my Dad bought way back from DCM and I also have mid 1950 M1 Garand that came from CMP a few years ago. I really need to get out and shoot them. If I could find a low cost good quality SKS and Nagant that would be nice also. Not. enough. time.

With Sarco they could be just about anything Mauser ever made, but the vast majority of Mauser patent rifles are either 7mm Mauser (Most Latin American rifles, especially Model 1893s and 1895s) or 8mm Mauser (Germany, her allies, the Turks, and Yugoslavian guns and most 1898s or their derivatives). They made a bunch of them for more minor players, or licensed the production, in calibers like 6.5mm Swedish to 7.65 rounds of various dimensions. Some few post-war rebuilds, like the Spanish FR8, are actually chambered for .308/7.62 NATO, but those are pretty hard to come by, especially at those kind of prices. As long as they've got a bolt body and receiver, though, it's quite a bargain, as the Mauser small parts are hugely available and broadly interchangeable, and the action itself is a favorite starting place for custom building projects.

Some say that you buy the three best in the barrel and assemble one worker and have a bunch of parts. They also have tables upon tables of spare parts for all kinds of guns but you I guess need to know what your doing which when it comes to military rifles I admit to being not that informed. Kind of a strange place. I assume that you would need to take a head space gage with you?

I had many chances for a 1903 but was young and dumb and didn't buy them. I do have an inherited Long Branch .303 that I have never fired. Now to get a 1903 I will be paying through the nose.

I've bought parts from Sarco for over 30 years, first through the mail and then on-line. Never did visit them while I lived in NJ, though. The Easton part is a relatively new adjunct to their operation, so they could get out from under increasingly-burdensome NJ restrictions on magazines, 'Assault weapons' as defined by NJ law and their parts, and just the problems of selling firearms in NJ generally.
If the SN matches on the bolt and receiver, and it seems to have the original barrel and has a used look to it, it was correctly headspaced for whatever round it shoots long ago. I can't speak for license-built guns, but if Mauser built them they should have the last two numbers of the SN on most of the major parts. Guns that were never issued may be reserve weapons that are short-chambered by about five thousandths, but those kind of pristine cherry pieces are not what you're gonna find in the sort of barrel lot you're talking about. Other than re-assembling the inner guts of the bolt, there is nothing difficult or even complicated about putting parts on a Mauser. The people at the store would be able to sell you the right parts, if they have them in stock, to replace missing parts, none of which are all that expensive or hard to find, aside from possibly the firing pin assembly out of the bolt. There's a special tool for installing and removing the extractor, but installing one can be done fairly easily without the tool. If they're short on helpfulness you could take a tablet with you and figure out the relevant part numbers from the Sarco website once you identified the model, then shop for those specific parts at the store.
Really wouldn't need the headspace gauge unless you bought a rifle without a bolt, or a mismatched bolt, but buying a boltless one for anything but a parts gun on another build would be rash, since a complete bolt might be as expensive as the rest of a beater rifle for some models, and even with a primo unmatched bolt there's no guarantee it'd headspace properly.

Say around 1970.

A few around here (SE Virginia) had a similar setup with $40 Mosin–Nagant. Bought a few then when Obama got into office sold them for $250 each!

If I might ask . . . how much? I saw a Shield .45 at a LGS for $10 over MSRP, last week.
