Anne Frank Literally Died Because Of America’s Anti-Refugee Stance
You’ve probably heard of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who famously recorded her experiences hiding from the Nazis. What you may not have heard is that she was one of the refugees the United States callously turned away in the early 1940’s. In February, Reuters reported that letters had been discovered showing that Frank’s father, Otto, was seeking help and money to procure a U.S. visa to flee Adolf Hitler.
Frank asked a former classmate in New York, Nathan Strauss, who owned Macy’s department store, for $5,000 as he attempted to flee Holland with his wife, mother-in-law, and daughters Anne and Margo. “This is the first concrete evidence that he did actually pursue the possibility of escape from Holland,†New York University professor David Engel said when the letters were released by the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
The letters, telegrams, and government documents reveal that Frank attempted to get into the United States in 1941, a year before the family went into hiding. In a letter to Strauss, Otto Frank wrote:
“It is for the sake of the children mainly that we have to care for. Our own fate is of less importance. You are the only person I know that I can ask.â€
Ultimately, the $5,000 was not needed because the “sake of the children†was not a matter of importance to the United States Government, who denied the visa. Strauss, now deceased, and his wife made several attempts to appeal the decision, even enlisting the aid of others, but to no avail. Anne Frank died in 1945 in a German concentration camp. But American University professor Richard Breitman says it didn’t have to be that way...

Not only that but the Republican Party had been defeated in landslide elections to Roosevelt in 1932 and 1936. Although Roosevelt was re-elected, support for his administration had dropped somewhat after eight years, and the Republican opposition gained three seats from the Democrats. However, the New Dealers regained firm control of both the US House of Representative and US Senate because Progressives dominated the election. The Minnesota Farmer–Labor Party also disappeared from the Senate, as Henrik Shipstead joined the Republican party and Ernest Lundeen had died during the preceding term.
The Dems held 66 seats in the senate, the Republicans 28.
The United States House of Representatives House election, 1940 coincided with President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's re-election to an unprecedented third term. His Democratic Party narrowly gained seats from the opposition Republican Party, cementing their majority. However, the election gave firm control of the US House of Representatives and Senate to the New Dealers once again, as Progressives dominated the election.
Democratic Party 267 61%
Republican Party 162 37%
Progressives 3 .06%
So the DEMS firmly held the government for the proceeding 8 years prior to 1940 and gained in the 1940 election in all elections. Somehow the NAZI atrocities are the Republicans fault.

Until they do, they shouldn't take in folks from other countries.

Yes, FDR's Administration and the State Department was anti-Semitic. But it's an apple-pineapples non-analogy. The Nazis weren't trying to infiltrate terror cells into the US by having them pose as Jews.

Some might say "Bolshevik" to that. Marx my words there were plenty of reasons for not Russian to their defense. (Not that that was not what FDR was about ...)

Are you suggesting that the millions of Jews slaughtered by the Nazis were all socialist-communist? Or that the State Department perceived them to be socialist-communist? I don't know that FDR was, himself, racist (or some flavor of social Darwinist) or anti-Semitic. Looking the other way on racism and anti-Semitism may have been the price he willingly paid to get Southern Ds onboard his bandwagon (i.e. while they accepted his statist economic policies).
My impression of the anti-Semitism of the time was that it centered on Jews being a distinct subculture and on their having migrated from Eastern Europe (US people haven't unanimously welcomed immigrants, whether the Irish in the mid 1800s or Germans a few times in the 19th and early 20th Century or Eastern European Jews or ...).
This is, of course, very different from resistance to the current wave of "refugees" from the ME and North Africa, who have been infiltrated with terrorist-wannabes.

NO. But there were certainly similar fears of anarchists, socialists, and communists infiltrating then too. FDR was not beloved by all back then, many thought him a little too cozy with Stalin.

There is no suggestion that all Jews were Socialists, Communists, or Anarchists. Nor do we know all Syrian refugees are terrorists either. The problem it would seem is determining who is and who isn't. Determination of this is best undertaken before they are on US soil. It is easier to keep them out than kick after they are here. Same with the illegals coming across the border, however the current administration refuses to address that either.
