Vintage photo of black caddie draws protest from Orlando commissioner

In this detail of an old photograph, a black caddie holds the flag for a white golfer at Dubsdread Golf Course. (DUBSDREAD GOLF COURSE / July 10, 2008)

When the newly refurbished Dubsdread Golf Course opens today, it will be without a historic photo that a city commissioner considers racially offensive.

The picture was taken down this week, but city officials haven't decided whether it's gone for good.

The sepia-tone photograph, displayed for years at the course's restaurant, The Tap Room, shows a barefoot young black man caddying for a group of white players.

Commissioner Daisy Lynum asked that the photo be taken down, saying the city-owned golf course was no place for a photo that many blacks would find degrading.

They really gotta work at it to be offended by this one.   :whatever:

Of course they could have said, " Look how far we've come...from being caddies to being pros".  Nah, they'd just rather complain.

I think we should eliminate any history that offends any race, that includes us "typical white people".
But if we do eliminate certain parts of our history, then there won't be any jobs for race hustlers like Jessie and Al.
They should think twice.

Byron Brooks, the city's chief administrative officer, plans to look at the picture and judge whether it should be returned to the wall, city spokeswoman Heather Allebaugh said. Brooks, who is black, cited concerns that black caddies might feel they were being erased from history, Allebaugh said.

Mr.  Brooks sounds like a man who respects common sense.

Maybe they could send the photo to Iran and have a third person, a black golfer waiting his turn to putt, photoshopped onto the green.

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site

Its not like he's tap dancing and spitting watermelon seeds... whats he big deal ?
My fellow Americans, there is nothing audacious about hope. Hope is what makes people buy lottery tickets instead of paying the bills. Hope is for the old gals feeding the slots in Atlantic City. It destroys the inner-city kid who quits school because he hopes he'll be a world-famous recording artist.

What's the difference between Sarah Palin and Barack Obama?

One is a well turned-out, good-looking, and let's be honest, pretty sexy piece of eye-candy.

The other kills her own food.
