Toon: Redistricting

after which a political cartoon that seems to imply both Democrats and Republicans are equally complicit in gerrymandering, which of course is utter nonsense

Lots of views, but no primitive comments, because most primitives know that the original poster isn't going to hang around to engage with them, and if he's not going to, why should they?

By the way, a map of the congressional districts of Nebraska, drawn up by an overwhelmingly Republican state legislature; one dares anyone to devise a map that follows the law so well, about compact, geographically logical, districts.

(no scale of miles, but Nebraska's almost--almost, but not quite--500 miles east to west)

Looks like you have the libs contained in one small area...

NICE!!

They really aren't, though.  Nebraska's pretty diverse all over the state.

The Democrats attempted to make Omaha (2nd) at least purple, by subtracting red counties from that district, but what happened was that Omaha became purple-red by adding the big guy in Bellevue to the Lincoln (1st) district, without diluting any red in that district.

We saw the movie "Nebraska" last night.

It's a really great movie, my pick for best of 2013, but it sure doesn't flatter Nebraskans.

2. Bipartisan, independent panels

Such as California voted in a couple of years ago. It's not perfect, but it's a hell of a lot better than letting the party in power do the redistricting.

I'm not from California, but my understanding of how that "independent" panel was thrown together seem suspicious:  five democrats, five republicans, and four people who "declined to state" their political affiliation.

So, nine democrats, and five republicans.

I'll bet the big guy hates not having access to the work computer at home, thus making it necessary to do all the posting on his own time AND his own computer.
This too shall pass.

Their hatred of the gerrymander meme ends when a minority constructed district is wiped away.

I don't think they realize that the Congressional Colored Folk Caucus wouldn't exist without gerrymandering.
My Old Man was a Chicago Republican until the day he died.

Then he became a democrat.

Isn't gerrymandering required by law, to maximize the number of black congressmen?

Yep. In certain states down south. Don't know the long and the short of it though, GB.  Not sure about other states and I'm too lazy to look it up.
