Tell them your computer crashed.
Yes, it's funny. Yet it's not that far from the truth either. I actually got a new computer earlier this year and migrated my business apps and client data to my encrypted computer (no cloud for client information!), but didn't migrate my expenses.
In the move, I had left my old computer in one of my friend's house in LA. So I am having him FedEx the drive to me. Since most of my work is online and I'm paid either through paypal or electronic fund transfer to my business account, I didn't think I would have to get everything, but now I have to justify every expense and deduction. I have paid a $300 retainer to try to resolve this crap, preferably under $4,000 if possible.
I may look to others who have been audited in this manner. So far Rich hasn't heard of anyone else being targeted, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. I mean, hell...I filed a 1040EZ fer chrissakes!! So it was probably very easy to find maybe one perceived hiccup. With Rich's other major donors, they probably have more extensive and complex tax situations.
I will make it very clear with whomever I talk with, several times, and I won't care if he or she is tired of hearing it as I will keep bringing it up, that this audit was a direct result of my involvement with a conservative candidate against a "popular" socialist, er, democrat senator. I want the auditor to be very uncomfortable and very aware of why he's visiting me, and I won't make it easy for him/her. Let's see what can happen.
EDIT: Actually, not a full edit, but just got word as I was finishing this post, my meeting is on July 7. Right after Independence Day weekend. I'll make sure I get a nice Gadsden flag to discretely show in the background...
