primitive has an interesting problem

Oh my.

You know, General Discussion is getting boring again, the primitives discussing something about which they know nothing.

The primitives really need to sit down, shut up, and let people who know what they're doing do the speculating.

franksolich on the other hand has decided the clue to the mystery bombers lies in the cooking and baking forum on Skins's island, as the primitives there for the past many years have displayed an extraordinary obsession with pressure cookers--3,460,000+ times, remember.

Considering the primitives' propensity for violence and sedition, that's not an unreasonable place to look.

Anyway, this is non-pressure cooker related, for some temporary relief from that.

I have an interesting problem I've never seen before.

I have a cast iron dutch oven that I use a lot. Today, however, I used it in the oven to slow cook a bean casserole. It's out and cool now, but I find I cannot get the lid to come off. It's like it's welded on. The cover fits so well that I can't get anything in between the cover and the pot to pry it off. Anyone ever had anything like this happen? Any suggestions?

2. Or boil a tea kettle

And pour that around the rim. Something is making it stick. An oven isn't hot enough to weld cast iron.

5. Agree. Sounds right. Put it in the sink and pour hot water to dissolve the sugar or whatever made that seal around the edges. It's very hard to break anything baked on. But possible with a bit of work.

3. Heat it back up again.

You have a vacuum inside. Put it back in the oven to warm the air inside until you can get the lid off.

Long term, file a few notches in the rim of the pot. The lid of a dutch oven does not need to fit tightly.

6. Teakettle worked great!

Thank you all.

By the way, I now have an awesome recipe for Cape Breton baked beans to share.

:hi5:  The DUmmie that suggested reheating it had the right idea, though. There have been times that I've poured hot coffee out of my thermos then put the lid back on and my wife couldn't open it, and I had trouble doing so.

Quite frankly, I've never heard of a lid sticking to a cast-iron pot.

Not in my entire lifetime.

It's curious, the predicaments the primitives get into.

I use mine every day.  It's the one thing that doesn't get put in the cupboard.  Never had a problem with it.

Nor have I.

Cast iron is sort of rough, grainy. Not likely anything would seal onto it from vacuum.

But you have to remember what kind of housekeepers DUmmies are.

We've seen several photos of DUmmy kitchens.

Every single one was filthy, a feast for roaches that no human should have to endure.

The lid may have been stuck by being seated onto the gooey, gummy residue that probably coated this DUmmy's pot.

I'd rather throw it out and buy a new one than admit on the internet I can't get a lid off. How embarrassing!!!!!  :runaway:

That's definitely the most likely option. A few years of DUmmy care would easily lead to a build-up of 'gunk' which could cause a seal to form.

Well after reading about what the DUches put in to ruin  perfectly good paghetti sauce, it would not surprise me that this one put something in his crock pot to cause the lid to stick.

Well I'm disappointed.
I thought it was going to be a "I have a job, now what?" post.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

LOL, I like your optimism in the face of overwhelming odds!
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Metal expands when it gets hot and contracts when it get cold. The heating and cooling also creates a pressure difference between the air in the cooker and the air outside the cooker. The OP let the cooker cool for too long before trying to open it. Reheating the the cooker will release the lid by expanding the metal and equalizing the internal pressure with the external pressure.

BTW, this really happened. I nuked two burgers, had the buns laid out on the plate with mustard and ketchup. I put the burgers on and put them together. I mistakenly made a burger with two bottoms and another with two tops! What do I do!!!!  :panic:

They're delicious, BTW.  :-)
