You get old and they kick you to the side of the road.
That's simply not true. It actually makes no sense.
You are needed and compensated according to the level of service you provide to your employer. If you spent more time thinking about how you could increase your value to your employer at your job, instead of, say, posting on Democratic Underground relentlessly, then they would have no reason to ever replace you. Why would they? It would be self defeating for your employer.
But this is a fact lost on you. You simply don't think correctly. You're attitude is most likely "why should I work any harder at making myself more valuable? They don't pay me enough as it is"...
And thus, you've missed the point entirely. It's not about money. It's about integrity; Being invaluable to your employer because you've set high standards for yourself and demand of yourself that you live up to them. If she or he lets you go; so be it. You know you don't have to worry because with your value you'll be able to find work anywhere, regardless of your age or the current economy.
