6. Because the more people that have health insurance the less the Govt has to pay.
Because insurance money comes from magic beans and trees that grow with unicorn pee. The most irresponsible, abusive of the system patients we have are the ones that have no co-pay, no monthly cost to them selves, and absolutely no responsibility about their own health. We prepare thousands of dollars of medication per month for patients, deliver it to their home, and they do not use it because they (basically have no good reason at all). They get sicker, requiring more expensive meds or admission to the hospital that costs a whole lot more than care at home and we (tax payers)pay the bills.
We have more trouble contacting people that do not work and sit at home all day than we do employed people. And then of course, we have to try to communicate with people, that english is a second language but they have been in the country for over 10 years. It is our responsibility to try to communicate in spanish not the other way around. Funny thing, we have a pretty good sized vietnamese community and they make a concerted effort to learn english or if 80 year old grand ma is getting care they make sure someone can communicate with us right away.
Some of the contracts that we are getting for reimbursement are AWP-25%. All drugs have a cost and an AWP. The AWP is like the MSRP on a car. Sometimes the spread between the cost and AWP is ok and you can do that. In our case it will be OK in 15% of the drugs that we sell. The rest of the drugs will be reimbursed at below cost. Then, thanks to govt regulation, specifically USP 797, we had to install a clean room that cost 100K. It has to be certified every 6 months (that costs too). We used to get what was called a dispensing fee. It cost money to prepare injectible medicates. Not free. Takes time and someone that knows what they are doing. Now, no dispensing fee.
How long does the govt expect businesses like ours to stay solvent. We can take care of a patient in the home at a fraction of the cost that inpatient days cost. But, if you cannot pay your bills, the owners get NO ROI, the doors shut. You will be going to the hospital or an infusion suite for your treatment, cost more, less efficient, and lousy service.
Enjoy your new health plans. And as a side note. I am retired military. Tri-care is going to get gutted. I can afford changes that occur. But there are lots of people that cannot. And the VA is NOT AN OPTION. (please learn about the va system before you spout off about that). Not a problem. I have no problem getting the same insurance coverage that an illegal immigrant gets.
