I think the Red Cross is ok, they are just really big and slow at times. They are still quicker then FEMA!
I give to some local groups, here in Nevada and other states.
On a national level I look for charities with low admin costs which are usually faith based.
I sent these two groups money for Sandy:

I also gave to the Red Cross.
DUmmies can't donate when they have both hands out looking for donations!
You know after 911 and all the millions and millions of money raised for the family's of the survivors, with the family's, the fire fighters, the police responders the count was about 10,000- 15,000 that needed help.
So $200,000,000 at a very low guess was raised, Each family should have received at least $1 million from the donations.
Scandal, we find the Red Cross had ear marked most of the money for other projects, totally unrelated to 911 the reason the money was raised for. We never got an accounting of how much of our money went to the victims family's, or how much went in trust for the first responders that developed lung disease in a few years from their work.
Just what are the salary's of the top Red Cross controllers getting per year, might be surprised to find how many get well over $300,000 a year-------Where does that money come from ? How many are there making over $200,000 a year -----20-50 ?
These salary's have to come from donations, so what do the the victims the money is donated to get, chump change.
I do not donate money to any Charity unless I know where my money is going, not in the back pocket of of a fund raiser. So I donate to the only Charity I have seen in action, The Shriner's Hospital for Cripple Children , Betash,[SP] Been 20 years since I saw my dads Hat, of Fez's or what ever the heck he wore with such pride.
