A little comparison, if I may:
Chicago Teachers:
$76,000 year average salary plus benefits.
16 percent payraise offered (and rejected) in latest contract
Union representation to negotiate/demand better working conditions, pay, benefits, etc.
180 instructional days per year (average 6 hours per day)
Paid vacations and holidays, including summers, Christmas, etc.
Generous retirement packages guaranteed by contract.
Military member:
$30,000 year salary, assuming you're at least an E-5 over 4 years. If you want that $76K, you better be in the senior O-4/O-5 range.
1.7 percent payraise for 2013. Take it or leave it.
Don't like your working conditions? Clean the sand outta your vagina, ruck up, move out, you ****ing *****!
No union representation--AYFKM?
Working conditions: -40 to +140, everything in between.
30 days of leave per year (and how many people outside training commands actually get to USE that leave?) Other than that, 100-hour weeks ain't uncommon. And yes, they CAN take away your birthday.
Retirement plans subject to change at the whim of the administration in power (Tricare premiums, anyone?)
Dear Chicago Teachers,
Quit ****ing whining and get the **** back to work, not that we'd notice considering the shitty product you've been turning out for decades now.
Most teachers I know or have known get the summer off and get a job of some sort. Now each day the teachers are on strike will like snow days eat into their summer time as they must as Sparkey says Educate the kids for 180 days. If this strike goes on for a month then this means 20+ days into summer for them and the kids.
This will screw up any summer plans for kids that get jobs on vacation as well as the teachers. Now this adding an extra hour a day may be a way around the problem. 20 extra hours a week lots of monkey business can be done with that math to bring them to the 180 days. Shorten the Hollidays off by one day here and there.
You can bet the teachers will not loose on thin dime on this deal. All has been worked out on how long the teachers can stay on strike and scare the pants off the parents.----Could be adding an extra hour a day going from 6 to 7 hours a day will come in here and the reason the Teachers Union did not have a fit when it was augmented.
They can break the days into 1,260 hours at 7 hours a day and make up a good bit of time. By the end of this week I betcha the Union gets what it wants and perhaps a bit more.
