A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.
 
The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.
 
The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts under the Obama administration’s plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.
 
The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.

That would be a job for a boomer, not an attack sub, which have a considerably tougher time being sneaky, and it would be very risky even then because the sub and the enemy high command don't know whether you are aware of the sub or not, so the launch could initiate an instant and massive retaliatory strike if they guess wrong, essentially provoking a near-first-strike by us on them.  The ideal vehicle for a sneak EMP attack would be a low orbit 'scientific' satellite with an undisclosed additional ballast with about a 50 MT yield tucked away on board.

Couldn't it be done with a cruise missile?  And, the Russians are selling Venezuela one of the Akulas.  Not that the Venezuelans will be anything approaching competent in the handling of it, but they only have to be lucky one time.

So this is what happenes when the Navy is forced to "retire" the S-3 Viking fleet. Yeah that was a good move by the Democrat led Congress.

A nuke in a cruise missile would certainly be a big problem for the county where it landed, but it wouldn't produce EMP problems much beyond its heat and blast effects area.  There may be some budgetary gamesmanship on the part of the Navy/DOD involved in the whole story, as well...I'm having a little trouble buying the 100% unvarnished truth of it as presented.

Yeah, like how do they know it was there for several weeks if it was undetected.

The Russian word "Pravda" means Truth, and "Izvestiya" means News; back in the old Cold War days, one of the bits of dark Soviet humor that leaked out about their own view of their country was the popular saying "There is no truth in the 'News' and there is no news in the 'Truth.'"

I'm guessing this boat's presence was known since it left Murmansk.

I'd be highly doubtful of the competency of the Venezuelans regarding running ANY submarine, let alone a 20-year old Akula.

 :cheersmate:   True, oh so true.    Oh and where did the Pix of the boat come from, could have been taken any where.

Cat and Mouse, they know where we are and we know where they are.   

As huge as the Oceans and Seas are, with all these Country's building boat as fast as they can, sooner or later  when a boy asks a girl to go watch the Submarine Races, this is fact will have nothing to do with going parking.

Wondering just how many boats are under the ice at the North Pole and from what country's they are all from.

Could this by any chance be all political?  Seems like every time the CAC tries to cut the Navy's budget, something along these lines come up.

Step carefully Obama, it is not good to mess with the Pentagon or our Fleet.
