Federal forecasters expect busy Atlantic hurricane seasonFederal forecasters Thursday predicted a 60-70 percent chance of a busier-than-average hurricane season in 2008, with as many as 12-16 named storms expected to form, of which six to nine should be hurricanes. Two to five of those hurricanes will be classified as major, with wind speeds of 111 mph or higher.
A typical Atlantic hurricane season, based on data back to 1950, sees 11 named storms, six hurricanes, of which two are major.
After two straight seasons of average or below-average activity—in spite of dire predictions—weather officials this year joined with emergency managers to stress "preparedness" this hurricane season.
"Living in a coastal state means having a plan for each and every hurricane season. Review or complete emergency plans now — before a storm threatens," said NOAA administrator Conrad C. Lautenbacher. "Planning and preparation is the key to storm survival and recovery."

Maybe they should have used a different title: "Half of all hurricane seasons are above average".

I worked with a guy once who wrote an article for our company newsletter. It was titled "100% of people who eat carrots will die". It was amazing how many people panicked.
