I'm not as in the know about this healthcare sham as I should be so I have a question that may sound dumb.
First, let me say that when I was 19 I paid for my own health insurance. At the time, I was working full time and going to college at night. I eventually got on with a company that had a group plan so I dropped my insurance and joined the group plan. When I left that company to start my own business I had the opportunity to continue the insurance coverage outside of the group; however, the monthly premiums would have been outrageous so I dropped it. Since then I have paid for every doctor visit, every medical test, every medication, and every hospital visit out of my own pocket. There have been a couple of occasions where I've had to work out a payment plan that spread the payment out over 12 months, but regardless, I paid the bill.
Please keep in mind that I do realize that it's best to have insurance, but when I was trying to grow this business I really didn't have the cash available for insurance. When I did finally get things to the level that I maybe could have afforded insurance the dems pulled the rug out from under the economy and almost destroyed me. Might still destroy me.
With all of that out of the way, if I'm understanding this sham correctly, I can either purchase insurance that I can not afford OR I can get taxed/penalized for paying my own bill. Is this correct?
If this is correct, is there other occasions in US history where you've been taxed/penalized for paying your bill?
