Hawk attacking my cat... what should I do?
   
A large grey hawk has been hanging out in our backyard for the past 2 weeks. Twice in the last 3 days he has swooped down and came within inches of grabbing my cat. The cat ran, and I threw stuff at the hawk, and he just goes back up to the telephone pole. I throw rocks at him and he flies away, but the next day he is back again. Any suggestions?

people who care about their cats keep them indoors, no excuses, there is no natural habitat for the housecat in north america

Moreover, if any animal of any species attacked me with deadly force, I would kill it without hesitation, in self defense. Even if it was the last surviving specimen of that species. My life is not worth sacrificing for the sake of the survival of another species. Sorry. I have rights too, and my cat has the right to live a life undisturbed by predators.

people who boldly boast that they are on the side of evil and the death of species really need to get a conscience but reality is that evil people don't turn to the side of good much after age 13 or so

too many people are happy to destroy species and the planet for their own convenience but i wish more of them had enough conscience to at least not boast about it

from an animal attack, I would kill that animal without hesitation or any guilt. The law doesn't matter in that situation. The endangered status of the animal doesn't matter in that situation. All that matters is my survival. The animal is dead. Period. Not a second thought.

Personally, if I saw you kill a hawk to defend you're cat, I'd call every agency I could to push for your prosecution. Cats are an invasive species and have no place in the natural environment of North America. They're just as destructive to nature as suburban sprawl and pollution, and are far more devastating than all of Americas hunters combined.

You have a right to a cat, and your cat has a right to live, but it MUST live in harmony with the natural environment that already exists. Neither you nor your cat has a right to change the environment or to kill or chase off native fauna. If your cat cannot live outside with the hawk, you should keep it inside.

That said, it's not likely that the hawk could get your cat. They do catch them on rare occasion, but cats are excellent at evasion. Dogs tend to be more frequent targets because they aren't built to evade the same way cats are.

As others have mentioned, you can also try some bird netting. It's effective, and you can net a typical yard for about $50. Put the number for the local SPCA on your speedial however, because you're going to be calling them to have injured birds untangled with some regularity.

Unless you're really up close and personal, he can slip right through your pattern.

For hawks, you want to use #6 shot. That's all I ever use for turkeys.

And with a full-choke barrel, at 40 yards a robin won't get through the pattern.

Yep, triple ott is for the moron that comes thru yer door in the middle of the night. Even then I prefer double ott.

Animals that are cared for are considered Property in most states.   You get a hawk catching your free rage chickens that you feed and depend on for food and eggs, no question asked the Hawk has to GO.

Cats are also property if fed and given Vet care, so are small 6 pound dogs,  they depend on you to keep them as safe as you can.

In some States it is illegal to shoot a Bear, catch one of them going after a calf or Foll and they be gone also.

Darn, were this Hawk to get a shining to your brand new car and decide to eat the paint or peck holes in it, perhaps get aggressive with the kids playing out side----Hawk be gone.

This is so stupid, Humans rights come before the rights of aggressive animals, and when a wild bird or animal acts out they may be sick with any number of diseases that can effect your family.  One has the right to protect their Property, from all threats.

I've heard it mentioned that #1 Buck is best for defense.  Especially the new Federal LE132 load (12 gauge).  It just came out, and it sold out virtually everywhere that had it--within hours.

As for hawks?  If one comes after my cat, I've screwed up by letting Oreo out.  Oreo's pretty heavy now, so that hawk had better have the lifting power of an AV-8B Harrier.  It's still going to get shot.

Don't the DUmpmonkeys claim that they are a majority? Wouldn't that be considered an overpopulation? Can we just feed DUmpmonkeys to hawks instead of cats?

I have a barn full of mice. My kitties keep them from overpopulating my property. Wouldn't bother me much if a hawk came after them as I'm pretty sure the hawk would be damned sorry they got a hold of one of them.

These cats are bad ass, and birds are a favorite prey. I discourage them however with my BB gun! They still grab one once in a while, but, that's how nature works. I'm thinkin' the tom might actually bait a Red Tail, and the eagles won't bother. Too much work for some pretty tuff meat! They're all around 10 years old.

Well since this jerk would work to get me prosecuted for protecting my pets I would double down and send this DUmmy to the hospital with the ass kicking of his life. If I'm going to jail for stupid liberal policy then I might as well beat the living shit out of a stupid liberal trying to get me busted via stupid liberal policy.
