Sounds to me like they didn't want to get dragged into the political arena that this case has turned into, but I don't know that this would be cause for disbarment.

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't see how dropping a client would lead to disbarment proceedings in this case.
Maybe not disbarment, but some kind of reprimand for misconduct.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

What misconduct?  Dropping a client?  I suspect it happens all the time.

As I understand it, in cases like this, it must be with a judges approval for counsel to be reassigned.

He hadn't even been charged with any crime when his 1st lawyers dropped him.  I don't see why a judge's permission would be required in such a case.  At the time they were not acting as his criminal defense lawyers.

At least that is my understanding.
