Just did a quick search to see his running tally of donations and this popped up. Old Steve's campaign letter for a union position notes he was fired from two jobs twice and prevailed in some way by union intervention.

Born 1957.

Graduated from high school 1975.

That's why this gap between his starring in Jesus Christ Superstar in high school, and his job at the Omaha waterworks, bothers me so much. It's 30-32 years.

That's a lot longer than eighteen-and-a-half minutes.

I was very low after being screwed by my unions Executive Board out of the Vice President position. It is a week tomorrow morning since I got the news. I'm getting over it. Some friends advised me to look over the rules. Got um! I have to wait three months, but I believe I will become the new VP after that.

This was the first time I ever spent this much time away from the DU. I'm back.

Today the Vice President of my local union was granted a disability pension for medical reasons. There is a year and 1/2 remaining on his term. I feel I am the best qualified candidate for the job. But politics can do funny things.

In the 3 way race for the job in the summer of 09, first place got 63 votes. Second place got 61. Third got 59. I missed the run off election by 2 votes. Five people in my shop didn't vote. First place lost the run off election by 1 vote, even though I endorsed her. Some men just don't want to vote for a woman.

Anyway my name is in the hat. It is not an increase in pay like it would be for most of the others that want the job. It is Monday through Friday salaried. Since we cover half of Nebraska there is travel and late nights. It's the grunt work of organized labor. I would love it. I'll have some very good written endorsements behind me.

The Executive board (all elected) will make the decision on the person that finishes the term. I have no idea yet who else will put their name in the hat. As soon as there is a chosen replacement, I'll be sure to post win or lose.

P.S. The conservatives in Nebraska are going to try to end all public unions at the ballot box. There is a better than 50-50 chance I will have to go back to my current job in Dec. of 2012 should I get the VP slot.

Just when it appeared that a marathon of meetings would be fruitless, State Sen. Steve Lathrop of Omaha announced Wednesday night that interests representing state business groups, public employee unions and employers had agreed on a compromise to reform the State Commission of Industrial Relations.

The deal, which state senators will debate Thursday, would maintain collective bargaining and retain the CIR as the decider of labor disputes involving public employee unions.

But it also would slightly ratchet down the compensation the CIR could order in good economic times. During recessions, the compensation would be ratcheted down even further.

For the last three months the threat was real that I would lose my right to be in a union. I have received so much support on the DU incluing my first post that made the front page recommended list. That was a few weeks before the Wisconsin news broke. Thank you.

My MRSA is clearing up. I see the infection specialist today. I should go back to work Monday after being on sick leave a month. I had oly been at work for a couple weeks following my surgery when I got MRSA.
It is a good day.

I gave the gift of life today (stay with me on this)

It was the first time in almost a year. I was over due for my next donation when I was hurt on the job last December. I knew in January I was headed for surgery and should not donate. I was cleared to start donating again a month ago. The last office blood drive happened on a day my co worker was out sick. I wouldn't leave with no one to cover the slot. So today was the big day. I'm O positive. I have a special quality about my blood. I've never had a virus most people have by the age of twelve. I don't have the anti bodies for this virus. I don't recall the name off the top of my head. A little help here. Because of this, my blood is used for newborns, cancer patients, those with aids, and the elderly. I have some friends (here on the Du too) that can't donate for several reasons. I gladly give my gift to those that need it. Bill at work (he can't afford to stay home) started his chemo Monday. I got a special hug before he left today.

You'd think a lifelong socialist would have more influence in a union of deadbeats.

But Socialist Steve Dawes finished third in a field of three, and then his endorsement was the kiss of death for the frontrunner.

Part of the problem may be that he never goes to work, so none of the other drones know who he is.

Omaha's former parks administrator says he lost his job because of city budget cuts.

Steve Scarpello's last day as a city employee was July 9, he said in an interview Friday. He said he was told his job was eliminated to save money during a difficult budget year.

Scarpello, 51, said the city offered him another position â€” concessions manager for the city's golf courses, hockey rinks and other sports venues â€” but he turned it down.

â€œI just thought it was probably better for me to advance my career and look for some different opportunities,â€ Scarpello said.

If he had accepted the position as concessions manager, Scarpello would have seen his salary drop significantly. That position will pay $56,843 next year, according to Mayor Jim Suttle's 2011 budget proposal.
As parks administrator, Scarpello received an annual salary of $86,641.
Scarpello, who worked for the city for nine years, previously served as parks director. In 2006, then-Mayor Mike Fahey appointed Scarpello to replace Larry Foster, who is now parks director in Council Bluffs.

Late Tuesday afternoon is my interview with my local unions executive board. I have several written endorsements from area labor leaders that should help. I should know fairly quickly after that if I am the new full time Vice President. If I get it, I will be leaving my plant when they need all the help they can get for flood conditions. It can't be helped. The local has over 550 members across a third of the state. The union office has been short a person since the former VP started his treatment for cancer last Fall. He beat the cancer but doesn't have the energy to work and took a disability.

Wednesday my physical therapy for my shoulder should get back on schedule. I missed therapy for a month while fighting VRSA, and lost ground on my recovery from rotator cuff surgery. My second shoulder surgery in 3 years.

I've not been posting as much as I usually do. Since I got back to work, I have just been so busy. I'll be back in the swing soon. I should hit 29,000 posts this week.

I'm allergic to the #1 drug used against it. Sulfa. I was on two different antibiotics. I also have been showering from head to toe with the soap you use before having surgery. It will take awhile to use up the full gallon. We also had to give baths to the dogs and cats with it, as well as Marta.

I used a full four weeks of sick leave over a five week period. The first three doctors including a dermatologist that saw it didn't know what it was. The dermatologist thought allergy. So the antibiotic the first doctor prescribed and the antihistamine were discontinued so I could take the allergy tests. This happened just as I was getting better.

The allergist knew what it was. That sent me to an infectious disease specialist. Had I not started getting better on my last trip, they were going to start round the clock intravenous drugs. Next step might have been the hospital. Glad I missed out on that.

After surgery, a person is at risk of staff or the MRSA version for a year. I think I got it at physical therapy. Wish I could prove it.

The next 4 years were the worst years of my life. More on that in a bit.

This afternoon I did something I haven't done in years. I walked into a Starbucks to order something. I told the Barista at the counter I wanted a large iced tea. I then told him I want to make sure my Barista is a union member. You could see I had upset him. He threw his bar towel against the counter and went into the back room. A young black worker came out with the largest smile she could make. She took my order. A few moments later I was at the cash register. As I paid for my tea she politely said in a low voice "thank you for your support". I said "same to you".

I lost it. I remembered in detail being fired at the age of 23because I wanted a union at my workplace. I had 3 kids to feed. I was black listed. It was 82 when I got my first work after being fired. I worked for 10 weeks as a paid picket in the Hinky Dindy (UFCW) strike. I would not find any work again until late June of 1983. Payroll had some problems. I got my first check for 6 weeks just before Marta went on strike against Ma Bell for 3 weeks. The last unified national strike against AT&T before break up the following first of the year.

I remembered loosing my unemployment appeal. Winning the first round with the NLRB. Loosing the next round with an administrative law judge. My appeal to the board was upheld. Industrial Label appealed to the appellate court in St. Louis. I won there. After close to 4 years I got a settlement check on the condition I turn down in writing my right to reinstatement at the company. Otherwise the company was ready to stall by appealing to the US Supreme Court.

It was a while before I learned it was the first black to sit on the NLRB board that made the difference in my case. Howard Jenkins Jr. was nominated by President Kennedy. He stayed through 5 different Presidents and earned the nickname Mr. NLRB.

My barista of choice asked if something was wrong? I could only say tears of joy as I walked away. I'm sure several people in the store wondered where the nut bag came from.

For those that don't know I was illegally fired last year. It was blatantly in retaliation for an ADA charge I filed against my former supervisor with the EEOC. My union filed for binding arbitration. The city settled 4 days before the hearing. The settlement included my reinstatement with back pay, benefits, etc... I just learned I'm getting promoted. It should take effect when I return to work from my surgery scheduled for next Friday. I've been home the last two days on pain meds. Once in a while the shoulder causes neck pain that turns into a headache. That should end after the surgery.

I was first sent to Doctor Ray. Semi retired knee man. He only had x-rays done even though I begged for an MRI. He said it was a sprain and to back to work on full duty. No pain meds, no therapy, no MRI. Two weeks later when the shoulder started swelling up, my own personal physician ordered the MRI. The shit then hit the fan. Dr. Kaiser is doing the work.
