Let's look at some facts. For starters, the current economic collapse began under President George W. Bush, and the TARP and other bailouts were initiated by the Bush administration. When Obama came into office the situation was dire, and there was no time to structure a more reasonable alternative. Obama had little choice but to carry through with the Bush plan or watch the economy collapse while he tried to build more effective policies, so he retained the old Bush financial advisers such as Ben Bernanke and Tim Geithner to carry out the plans they had devised. Then Obama made a number of additional attempts to right the economy, but these were inevitably frustrated by Republican congressional obstructionists. This was particularly obvious in the Senate, where they used continuous threats of filibusters to block action on legislation supported by the majority. The absolute top priority for many Republican politicians is to bring down Obama. To this end they are willing to generate any amount of human suffering, to wreak untold damage on the economy, and to generally weaken America, just so Obama will lose in November. They are in a bitter blue funk over the fact the economy is improving and unemployment is declining. What could be more despicable than this: deliberate policy aimed at prolonging the misery of tens of millions of average Americans, and damaging the nation itself, all for momentary political gain?
