I'm not sure I believe this story.  Anybody 67 years old, living in the Adirondacks, knows what's what.  They're not a braindead teenager, or a scatterbrained flake.  Nature can kill you there, and nobody gets caught short in heating fuel.  Not unless they want a Darwin award.

Err, Karin, I have seen people  from spring to fall to go into the sides of the roads looking for dead wood trees, the States incourage this, the scavengers clean out all the dead wood that would be a problem in a forest fire,.   Problem comes when a company with a contract with the state runs the people off and leave the dead wood laying around.

67 is a good ripe old age to be chopping wood, good exersize and a a death penility to those with heart conditions.

We up here in NH. have thousands of miles of roads that go into the deep woods, the dead wood is abundent and free for for those that will take the time to wander into the woods and haul it out.  Chopping dead wood is something a  12 year old can do, it is the the fresh new downed trees that need a lot of strength.

All ways a problem for the people that scavenege for a living, or just take advantage of the stuff no one else wants.

Then there is the problem of the number of people that heat with wood.    Not but a few in the citys , and with the new built homes in the country, and NO fire place------All electric or Propain  .

We have an abundence of wood for heating up here, Problem is we need a place to burn it.   A fire place that will not suck out all the air that is hot in the home.    Then the safty that the stove is far away from the walls to not burn the house down.

Takes money to install a wood heating system, sure the wood is free but one has to prepare a proper stystem to insure safty and get the heat to go into the home and not out the chimmy.

Reading the original bouncy, the first thought was maybe this woman at 67 is too old to cut wood (although my dad is the same age and does over 100 cords a year to keep the woods cleaned out and make a little spending cash.)  But when looking again, I noticed the author specifically pointed out that she "cuts her own firewood."  This changes things, it's not that she can't cut wood, it's that she doesn't want to, she wants wood cut, split, and stacked for her, free of charge.  I also live in NY, there is no reason she can't get free wood, she just doesn't want to work at it.  Some examples:

1.  I know a couple guys who heat with wood, that go around to logging skid yards and offer to cut up the butt ends and scabs the loggers don't want.  But this must be too much work, finding the loggers, talking to them, then cutting the wood and hauling it home.

2.  One of my brothers owns a sawmill, and while he sells hardwood slabs, he gives away the softwood slabs simply to keep them from piling up on him.  It's not the best wood, but it's free, just have to haul it away and cut it up.

3.  Talk to tree services.  They are always looking for places to dump wood.  Now this can be a crap shoot at times, you never know what you might get, but building up a relationship with a tree service can help you pick and choose what gets dumped.  I've got several dozen people I dump hardwood for (just dumped fifteen 10 wheeler loads of oak and maple for a guy last week), totally free of charge.  But once again, you have to work at cutting and splitting it.

4.  If you are really desperate, go around to large production companies and haul away their broken pallets.  Once again, not great wood, but it burns.  But that takes work too.

I guess the point is, there is no reason why you have to be cold in NY if you heat with wood and are willing to work at it.  Free wood is fairly abundant.

You really need to be careful with the highlighted above, the pallet wood is usually very dry wood making it very easy to over fire your wood stove.  Use in moderation.

Also watch out for chemical saturation. They could emit dangerous fumes.
Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

Cleaning a fireplace at her age isn't easy either.

If someone had thought about maybe purchasing two $40 a piece creamic tower heaters, it would have been better.  I have two. I use them in my big bedroom and in my bathroom when it gets real cold. It never gets hot, controls the temp, costs pennies to use.

If you close off the rooms you don't use, those heaters will actually heat two rooms per heater.  They work really well.

We have a fireplace.  My husband buys wood down the street from an older gentleman for $100 a cord. We found him in the newspaper.  He'll load your truck or trailer if you want. The fireplace is nice to have but you still need to watch it and clean it. Lugging in wood isn't ideal even to me but it is better than freezing to death.

Maybe next year the DUmmies will pop for a few heaters instead.   :whatever:

That and a lot of them are treated with FR chemicals so even if they do burn they'll give off tons of not-so-nice fumes.

Yeah, short of cutting my own trees down (and far too many of them are pine, which makes them virtually worthless) and splitting them, it's buying wood.

Unfortunately, wood is usually much pricier than in other areas.  Typical price for seasoned wood is upwards of $250/cord.  If you're lucky they'll deliver and stack it for you.  The 1/3 cord we got was $90, and we hauled it/stacked it.  But it beats the hell out of the $5-6 per bundle the tourists buy outside Cumberland Farms on their way "upta camp" in the mountains.

What about the seniors that have no place to burn wood, it comes down to having to chose between the electric and the gas or oil to keep warm at 32 degrees outside and food to live.

Do we dare suggest the seniors give up their home, their pets, the life style they worked all their lives for to force more assisted living conditions on them???   A double or triple room in a nursing home and they have to leave behind all that is important to them.  We thank them for their service to our country, it is just hard luck that there are few relatives left to help you, most friends have died or are in ill health to help you or visit.

Tough cookies people, you are 67, have worked for over 50 years, paid taxes, raised and put kids through college, some that may have given their lives for our country, whats the complaint, your savings are gone,  due to bad investments and the stock market, now you cry out you cannot afford medication, heat and food, taxes and  a life time of work is gone.------Your problem-----You know life, it sucks.     DAMNATION on those that dare to live a long fruitfully life.    This  whole mind set makes me SICK and wondering where we go next.

----So Liberals expect people who built and suffered for this country at their old age to give to them what their grandparents worked for???  WTF, uncle AL has no family but has a coin collection that he could give to me if I can find a way to get him in a Nursing home. Nothing really wrong with uncle Al but he has to take heart medication and insists on chopping wood for heat. For his own good I believe we have to claim him incompetent, put him away some where he is SAFE and take over without his knowledge of consent every darn piece of his life, the things he worked so hard to acquire.

Most seniors that can no longer drive, need to lug about an oxygen tank cannot be expected to be dragging a tank of O2 outside to cut wood.

This thread has a very close to liberal bent to it, expecting a 67 year old to chop her wood when for all we know she is in a wheel chair.

The seniors that need help after a life time of helping others is my concern, the help for the adults who have lived on the government teet for all their lives, unless disabled as children become a second thought.

Conservative though is to first help those that helped us and our country, everyone falls on hard times, the older generation has bailed their kids out of all kinds of messes, but when it comes time to find the family is bleed out by the family and can no longer help the kids,  the liberal kids and family think nothing or rushing in and taking what they wish from their grandparents and other family members.

So what is the age the liberals put at when a family member is helped, 67 years or 77 ?    Insane, long as they have something they want, the freaking Liberals will have grand pa responsible for for chopping wood at 90.

Vesta, consider this an intervention.

It's okay not to post.  Really.

And if I'm not capable of getting around, caring for myself, etc., I'm either going into an assisted living facility/nursing home, or taking one long last walk into the woods.  The hardest thing about growing old is admitting when you're no longer capable of caring for yourself.  Yeah, it sucks, but life is full of sucky shit.

And if you're in a wheelchair and essentially helpless, you have no business being in a cabin in the Adirondacks.  They won't even allow cell towers there.  At this point in life and disability, one gets to town, and arranges for appropriate facilities.

The alternative is to become dinner for the wildlife that live there.
