Occupy Phase II
Well on the 17th they will be launching phase two, occupy 2.0
From local events I can tell that the PHYSICAL occupations will be coming to an end... heck a few will simply not even take off. But what is coming is far more actions... and things that will surprise the elite.
As I keep saying movements have arcs...
But seriously, the Mission Bay Occupation (San Diego's weather ain't helping) will have to wait to the spring if they want to do a physical anything. I know Alaskans are a tad tougher. but you gotta understand... 50 with a wind chill factor of 40 will drive San Diegans INDOORS.
That's ok... it is evolving... and as it evolves it's harshest critics will find new things to take exception too. That is also part of the arc.
Just a little bit ago they were comparing them to those at Valley Forge.

Face it numbskull once the freebies dried up and the weather got bad all you low life vermin headed inside like rats always do.
Wonder where the hundreds of thousands of dollars will end up?

1. It would seem a 50% poverty rate now in this country should add to OWS. My thinking is
a lot of people support OWS even though for whatever reason their presence might not be at the occupy events.
Leftists always support someone else doing the dirty work.

2. Also some are afraid of police harassment\ arrest\ injury\death
One of the reasons for the police over response
No, I am not being cynical... it is the truth.
You are just being an idiot.

17. No, not cynical at all, it is the absolute truth. The police state response was horrific and
IMO done to keep the masses and serfs in line.
Or to deal with people that break the law while acting like animals.

34. As an asthmatic, I would be afraid to attend an Occupy protest during a crackdown.
I wouldn't stay overnight, I would at most go during the day. A shot of pepper spray to the face and mouth could easily kill me.
Moot point since I'm essentially exiled in a foreign country without an Occupy movement, but it would be a real concern, and I'm very much a supporter.

7. And we still haven't gotten to the "austerity" yet
Half the country's in poverty (or near it) and they're STILL going to try and cut social services so their masters don't have to pay more in taxes.
This shit is going to get hot before it's over with. The Occupy movement will seem like the "sensible center" when the resistance to austerity REALLY cranks up.
You should be praying it doesn`t,you won`t like where it ends.

10. Labor is just getting started
and internal elections are such that the known leaders have been voted out. This means they are getting militant

30. Discussions between OWSers and t parties

8. Pray tell, what is this "arc" of which you speak?
Firstly, I am much interested in what Occupy II turns out to be.
Secondly, I'm also arc curious. What kind of arc are we talking about here? How does it differ from, say, an inventory/laundry list of items/events/things that might happen, some of which will, of course, happen?

9. Think of any social movement
They all start in the streets, with definite demands. I am ignoring for the moment how OWS self perceives and how they use language regarding demands.
In time all movements manage to get enough pressure into elites where their language is used by the larger culture and their goals adopted. In fact, in time those same elites stop ignoring them and adopt most of the goals.
Think Gandhi. first they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you... then you win.
The Civil Rights movement started well before Rosa Parks sat in the bus. But think of how people took to streets, and occupied lunch counters... and in time their agenda was taken over by the government and enacted. The last act of any social movement is that some in the movement will fully enter the system and run for office. The other reality is that some will also fully check out... both are the extremes.
You mean like conservatives actually did in 2010 rather then sitting around on the street in their own piss?

23. I think the only way the game will change is if REAL unemployment is pushing past 30%
Often, the number quoted for the Great Depression is about 25%, but there's been some argument that it was, in reality, somewhere higher than that. This put a lot of people out of work and onto the streets, and this is where a lot of food rioting and labor protesting occurred. People had nothing left to lose, especially after the banks took their homes, and unlike today, there were no social programs to prevent people from hitting rock bottom. It seems throughout history people only get up and fight when the pain is made too unbearable

29. We are so close to this
It's not even funny.
No serious. Did you check the poverty numbers per us census today?
Selatius (19,375 posts) Profile Journal Send DU Mail
32. The poverty numbers are terribly high, but...
if it had to be a choice between living in poverty in 1932 vs. living in poverty in 2012, the latter would still win. There is still some semblance of a safety net. It is without the safety net or if it is effectively destroyed that things will grow very desperate. There were no such things as public housing and food stamps and other things preventing people from outright starvation living in the streets. That's why things were so dicey in those days and quite a lot of people started agitating for change. They were people with nothing left to lose.

33. I can't put into words just how much respect
and admiration I feel for you and everyone else who is involved in this important social movement.
I think it is already a fact that this brand new law they are pushing to arrest and detain without real cause is directly tied to the 99% standing up against the elite, but am I being paranoid to think this latest cell phone ban while driving is also connected? I mean the part where even bluetooth devices will be illegal?
To a lunatic anything can make perfect sense.
