I think the stereotype of the primitives as basement dwellers first evolved because so many primitives--the late Khephra being one of them--used to talk a great deal about sitting in the basement, no windows, black and fluorescent paint on the concrete-brick walls, no vista to the greater world outside.

Me?--I live in a house that's 60% windows (so as the catch the wonderful views of the greater world outside), and sit and post in a generously-sized alcove separating two very large and airy rooms (dining room and living room), almost right in front of the front door (although my back's to it).

I can turn three of four directions, and see what's around me, that greater world outside.
