Clark County School District hands out iPad2 to students
« on: September 14, 2011, 06:08:01 PM »
I helped buy 1,150 iPad 2's for students in middle & high school in Clark County.   :whatever:

Quote
Paper textbooks might soon go the way of the slide rule and typewriter as the Clark County School District launches a $790,050 iPad program, the largest of its kind in the nation.

Instead of receiving hefty books, about 1,150 Las Vegas middle and high school students were given thin, iPad 2 tablets, each loaded with an interactive textbook application for their Algebra 1 classes.

But that's not all, we also had to pay for the application for the Algebra I class.

Quote
The $49 Fuse application allows users to learn at their own pace, Blumenfeld said. If students miss a class, they can tap into about 400 video tutorials led by textbook author Edward Burger, a math professor at Williams College in Massachusetts.

Our district is broke, but hey, let's just purchase some iPad 2's anyway.

It’s a bold move by the cash-strapped district, which came under fire last year after purchasing $1 million worth of iPads for administrators. The school district faces a $56 million budget shortfall, which it plans to plug with concessions from its four employee unions.

Just think how wonderful it would be if 1 iPad could replace 3-4 teachers. :)

"...and by 6 pm most were already in the local pawn shops."......Me.... :rotf:
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

"America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality, and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within."  Stalin

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts.
Wasn't it just a year ago where another school gave away computers to kids and there was a spy program inside.
Teachers and employees could watch kids at home dressing doing all sorts of things that teachers shouldn't be seeing.

The spyware was supposed to catch kids being abused by their parents: that was the justification.
NO parental abuse was found, but a bunch of school employees and teachers ended up in  jail for spying on underage kids dressing.

Ya know, today, ya just can't trust a liberal or a union man with any kind of power like that. They will corrupt it EVERY TIME!

step 4. for efficiency , customize their indoctrination
step 5.

Like it or not this stuff is part of the future of classrooms. It's only a matter of time before things like this is common place in the classroom. And IMO I see it as a good think provided the schools can afford them.

Personally, I think all schools should have e-readers as to replace textbooks at this point at a minimum.

An e-reader is FAR from an IPad.

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site

I know, hence why I said "at a minimum". In the future I doubt a simple e-reader will be enough though.

it IS nice when the schools can afford them, but when they budget for these and cant pay for their electric bill and ask for a general funding bond referendum to force the public to vote to keep the school open, it sure urks my nuts.

and if the e reader will save money over buying actual textbooks, im for it.

An iPad2 is not something that students require to learn.  About e-reader's replacing textbooks, maybe for colleges (where the students purchase it themselves).  I'd never want an e-reader to replace a textbook, I like to highlight and place post-it notes every where.  I cannot do that with an e-reader.
