Here Comes Irene
« on: August 25, 2011, 10:11:47 AM »

Hope everyone who will be affected by this monster is getting prepared. Sparky and I are already in "Hurricane Mode", stocking up on water, batteries, gas for the generator, picking up the yard toys so they don't become flying weapons of death in the gusting wind, etc.

Looks like this is gonna be a nasty one for the entire East Coast.  :(

Wow, that goes right over the beach.

Being on the beach during a heavy storm is pretty frightening... there's nothing to stop it.  It just rolls right over you.  Glad I never had to live through any hurricanes.

Working at the plant on Sunday, more likely than not chasing shit around the fenceline.

But at least it's double time.

My husband just fired up the generator in the driveway (I can hear it now) to get it ready to rock and roll.    Getting gas, water and other stuff at BJs tomorrow.    We'll be ready.

Stay safe everyone.

Evacs started on Ocracoke yesterday. I think they've made it mandatory for everyone now, on the Outer Banks. Keep reading conflicting reports though, so I'm not sure.

Did see on one report that the Navy is sending all ships out to sea. The report said there are a total of 64, at Oceana, though some are already out.

Yep, they started with the small islands and have moved up the coast from there. Originally, Dare county was just for visitors but is now mandatory for all. Waiting to see if the powers that be call for evacuations in my county. Already prepared as much as possible. Did my shopping yesterday and had a bizarre experience: Walmart had every checkout lane open, and I still waited almost 15 minutes to check out.

Portsmouth, N.H., and Portland through Down East Maine

The eyewall of Irene is forecast to pass to the west Sunday night. However, periods of heavy rain (3 to 6 inches), gusts near hurricane force (60 to 75 mph) and well-above-normal tides (2 to 3 feet on average) can occur. Expect widespread power outages, downed trees and flooding.

Irene's final, quick-hitting visit to North America will be in Atlantic Canada. The provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Quebec will be affected later Sunday night into Monday.

The worst conditions with heavy rain, damaging winds (40 to 60 mph) and pounding surf are likely in coastal areas of New Brunswick, southeastern Quebec and Nova Scotia, where flooding (3 to 6 inches) and downed trees and power lines are possible.

Remember, if your city of interest does not appear on this list, you can get your latest local forecast on AccuWeather.com.

=====================================================================

At least it doesn't look like we'll be getting as bad as we got it last February (90+ mph gusts off Isle of Shoals) but nothing to take lightly either.  Trees are heavy and gravity is a bitch.

Today at work was PACKED, I think people were worried the world was gonna end :runaway: :overreaction:!!!! This was Falmouth Maine. I have to work Sunday. My boss has already told us to tarp all the tables, take down all hanging plants, so Sunday will be crazy to say the very least. I have Monday off, so Jingles(cat) and I will be chillin while Irene rages by us. I wonder if they will evacuate us.hmmm. I am only 4 miles from the ocean(Old Orchard Beach), and this is a big evacuation area apparently. I will be okay I am sure. Everyone stay safe!!!!

To  put up the tarps?? We are not doing that till Sunday, till we know for sure in what direction Irene is going. Saturday nite at the earliest. Keith(boss) is good about stuff like that, keeping tabs and keeping Phil and I informed.

I am more worried if the officials will do a mandatory evacuation on Monday.

No, wait until Saturday to see the real panicked idiots.

Better yet, head over to Home Depot or Lowe's after you've been without power for a couple of days and watch them fight over generators in the parking lot like they did after the ice storm in 2008.  Pure comedy gold.

I'll have to get some more diesel for my generator tomorrow, the tank is mostly full but I'll get some extra. If I don't use it in the generator I'll end up putting it though the car anyway.

I've got lots of food and that. If worse comes to worse I can use the wood stove to boil water a such. I'll likely get some books from the library in case I lose the internet.

One thing I have to do is get the chainsaw going and if I can't do that I need to find another one. The chance of a tree or two coming down in the road is very high.

Have to be honest, I'd take a snow storm over this crap. I am used to this stuff though.

Always ready for most anything. Alien invasion? I'm not sure?
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

I just got an email from a good friend who recently got back from a trip to Nags Head.  She said there had been tons of nourishment work done on the dunes and beach line.  This will wipe it out.

Someone said upthread they'd rather be in a snowstorm than this and I'd have to agree.  Having been in both I'd readily choose the snow even though I hate the stuff.  I remember Hugo too well.

Everyone please be safe!

Also NOAA is by far the best website (IMO) for hurricane updates and forecasts. Just thought I'd post a link.

Well I got beer.   Then ran back to the store and got more beer.   I'll probably go get some more beer.  Oh yeah picked up 100 pounds of 16ct brown shrimp yesterday ($3/lb)  :cheersmate:

Outerbands are starting to hit us now.  Supposed to make landfall within 30 miles, thank goodness to the east.  Estimated storm surge for the Neuse is 7-9ft so the water is really gonna start backing up around here.

The big water ferry fleet Hyde and dare counties will be shutting down soon.  Cherry branch and Auroa ferry will run until they can't get the ramp down or 65mph winds.

Gonna move the boats today.  Gotta get one moved to another dock with a higher roof.  Got two in the yard under trees.  And another that I would pull, but the man has the trailer all ripped apart, so it needs a roof.

I sure hope that she'll track back east again, cause right now it looks like Bogue Banks will be the landfall, a thirty mile move west the eye is coming over me.

I think I probably need to go get more beer.

I am extremely worried for my friends and loved ones who still reside where I used to live in the Tidewater/Peninsula area of the lower Eastern Shore of Virginia. We got lucky with Hurricane Earl last year, but it looks like there is going to be significant damage from this one. There are a lot of mobile homes and house trailers in that area that just will not withstand that kind of impact.

Everyone please keep our CC member Red October in your prayers. I am very concerned for his safety through all this.

First time in over 20 years have I seen Hubby get aggravated over Anything.

We faced Hurricane Bob with him not so worried, but this one has him in a most unusual mind set.

I awoke at 3 am,. to his pacing back and forth trying to plan for where the eye would hit and what part of the home would get the most damage.

Who the hell is this man and what has he done with my husband??????----Freaken Pod People.

Never seen him in full survival mind set before, -- I suggested we rent a U-Haul for a couple days, put a matrice, food ,water and the pets in and head for the mountains. These storms only last a few hours but if worse comes to worse we would not have to pay for a motel for a week.

This is becoming collective hysteria, there will be damage and lives lost but we have to make an escape plan in case of loss of roofs or whatever.

Medication is a problem for those in hard hit areas, getting a few extra weeks on prescription drugs is a no brainier.  Our insurance will give out extra medication if on vacation, why not in a potential storm emergency????

What a great time for a storm to hit, no one gives a flying fart about Obama and politics, all the hysteria is focused on survival from a storm.  Lord knows what Obama and his troops can sign into law as we all head for the hills.

Will Obama stay in DC or be safely in some cave in the mid west------Memories of Queen Bess and husband staying in London as the Germans bombarded the city around them.------Will Obana run from nature not a human enemy or stand strong and proud in the Capital and face what his people have to face??

Darn but this will be interesting.

UGH! we're heading to the store today to pick up supplies. Hoping we don't lose power, there goes everything in my freezers. Thinking of getting a generator if there's any to be found but my Husband says no, we'll see.
