IF???? THEY??? Not acceptable, Gina. It's YOUR record and YOU can demand that "they" respond to you.

If you knew the doctor can't help you, why did you go to him/her?
RELATED: People are cowed by being in the hospital inpatient or for tests. They have to remember that it's the most expensive Holiday Inn they'll ever be in, and that if they are unhappy with their treatment or the staff, they can demand another doctor and bitch loud and long about the staff before demanding to speak to the supervisor.

Of course, there's always walking out the door AMA. I tried that once back in the 1980s and was told I couldn't do it. I said, "Watch this! As I leave, all you'll see is my ass and 2 elbows as I get into the elevator!" I got treatment THAT day!

Would that have been difficult?

I've never had a problem getting a referral from a GP.

Nor have I. Sometimes even over the phone. But different states have different regulations.

Nor have I. Sometimes even over the phone. But different states have different regulations.

Also depends on the insurance provider. Unless insurance policy specifically says that one has the right to go to any doctor for any reason - if one goes to a specialist without first getting a referral from primary care physician, insurance won't pay. They can also get out of paying if you go to a specialist then go back and get the referral from the primary care doc.

Health insurance is cheaper (at least individual is, so I would assume group is too) if there is a "gate-keeper" clause in it. It used to be that an internist or ob-gyn could be a gatekeeper, but I've heard that many policies have switched to requiring a GP or Family Practioner to be the gatekeeper, as their basic fees are usually less than in internist or ob-gyn. (you learn a whole lot about health insurance when you have to get it on your own, usually the hard (expensive) way.  :banghead:    :censored: )

Also depends on the insurance provider.

Our insurance allow us to visit any doctor, any time. Some specialists might require a referral, however.

Will depend on if she gets to keep the current insurance in place as her retirement insurance.

When I was at Talbot's, I had fabulous insurance. When I left, I was able to get COBRA with the exact same terms for 18 months.

I got Golden Rule (it's called something else now) after my divorce until I went to work for Talbot's. As much as I was paying for that crap, I found out the hard way, what a bad policy it was when I had to have a partial hysterectomy. AFTER the surgery! It only covered 50% AFTER my deductible, and I spent 4.5 days in the hospital.  :censored:  I was really lucky that my Gyn happened to file first, and that he gave me professional courtesy even though I was divorced. His bill covered my deductible, so I only (only  ::)  ) had to pay half of the hospital and anaethesia bills, which was bad enough. I learned to be very careful to read ALL the small print on insurance policies after that.

Depends on who it was that said it was "normal".

Was it an orthopedic surgeon? A neurologist? A radiologist? A gp? The mri tech?

I'd only be wantin' the opinion of an orthopedic surgeon.

Were you standing for the X-ray?  Normally the ortho wants that so he can see how the spine aligns under load.  But you would have been laid out on the table for an MRI.  It does make a difference.

I was laying flat on my back for both the mri and the xray.

This was from a general doctor, a md.

I am going to see them tomorrow and I am going to ask for a referral to an orthopedic doctor.

Yeah, you definitely need to see an ortho.

Orthopaedic Doctors are the BEST, IMO. Neurosurgeons?? Meh, not so good. (At least in my experience)

I have been doing this for pain and it is working very well.  I hope they let me keep up the regimen

5am - 1 percocet
11am - 1 ultram
4pm - 1 percocet

It has been keeping my pain at bay and I have felt so good.

OK.

So tell me what you think.

The FNP said the mri doctor said that my scoliosis is not causing my back pain.  I am in no pain.  I told her that is not right and asked to be referred to an orthopedic dr and she said she would.  But how can a md say from an mri that I am not in pain?

There is NO WAY a doctor (or anyone else) can tell from an x-ray or MRI if you are/are not in pain. That is totally subjective to the patient. Very rude and disrespectful toward you! Question: was your MRI with or without contrast? The first MRI I had following my disc rupturing showed "everything within normal limits." Thank God I had a good neurosurgeon who requested a new MRI with die contrast. The mess in my lower back showed up beautifully on that one. Hopefully you will get into the ortho quickly and he will either be able to tell you something or refer you for further tests to found out what is causing your pain.

Thank you!  I am about ready to cry right now just because she made me feel like I was faking every bit of it.  I know there is a very fine line that you have to walk not to look like a druggie but crap.  I just don't want to hurt.  I can't miss work at all because I am on probation.

I hope I do get to see the ortho doctor soon.  I just wonder if he will figure it out.
