cali (1000+ posts) Sat Aug-13-11 07:28 AMOriginal messageI'm so tired of seeing gay used as a slur here against republicans. It's not OK. It's homophobic.
wakemewhenitsover (1000+ posts) Sat Aug-13-11 07:40 AMResponse to Original message2. Hear, hear. In any context, usage of "gay" as a slur is, at best, unenlightened and ignorant; at worst, hateful and hurtful. I think some people are under the misapprehension that it is somehow hip or funny to use "gay" as a disparaging adjective. Ironically, it's the sort of demeaning crap I'd expect to see on a Republican board.

TroglodyteScholar (1000+ posts) Sat Aug-13-11 09:40 AMResponse to Reply #533. You can't put homophobia and "anti-religious bigotry" on the same level... ...not and be fair, anyway. A lot of us are "anti-religious" because we don't want to be governed by anyone whose positions are dictated by the irrational (i.e. faith). I don't think that's bigoted at all...just reasonable.
robcon (1000+ posts) Sat Aug-13-11 09:59 AMResponse to Reply #3335. What a lame excuse for bigotry, Trog. You sound like racists in the Civil Right Era, who blamed their hatred of black people because of their fear of being run by n****rs or n****r-lovers. They claimed that those are the facts, too.If your bigotry is based on so-called "true" facts, as you see them, you are totally blind to your bigotry, Trog. Sucks to be you. You're not alone: there are 217 recommends on the thread promoting religious bigotry: "OK, I admit it. I will openly discriminate against the highly religious in the 2012 elections."
a2liberal (189 posts) Sat Aug-13-11 08:27 AMResponse to Original message11. There's of course nothing wrong with being gay but... Edited on Sat Aug-13-11 08:27 AM by a2liberalThere IS something wrong with being gay while fighting against equal rights. I think the hipocrisy is what some people are trying to call out. They're not trying to use the "gay" part as a slur, but instead the implied "hypocrite".
ashling (1000+ posts) Sat Aug-13-11 08:38 AMResponse to Original message18. How about "ga(h)ypocrite" I have only seen it used in this context ... and as much by LGBT DUers as others. Before I get hate mail, I hardly use the term at all, anyway.
Cali has plenty of time to sit and think about this type of stuff, after she wallduded from Perennial Pleasures Nursery in Vermont. Speaking of which, does anybody have the link to Perennial Pleasures Nursery in Vermont handy?
"The nation that couldn’t be conquered by foreign enemies has been conquered by its elected officials" odawg Free Republic in reference to the GOP Elites who are no difference than the Democrats
I take it that DU and Wanda Sykes got upset over this?Anger: Olivier Odom, right, was forced to turn her T-shirt inside out so she and her partner Jennifer Tipton could enter the Dollywood theme park.
Well, we could go back to using queer....suits me.
