Keeping the world safe from poker night:

Well to be fair, some people really suck at poker. Then again, WTH?  :banghead:

Quote
The latest raid targeted a poker game inside a private residence in the Bexhill subdivision in West Knox County, according to a KCSO spokeswoman Ashley Haynes.

Deputies discovered eight people around one poker table at 1304 Buxton Drive, and seized approximately $1,000 cash, Haynes said.

No arrests were made, but all information was turned over the Knox County District Attorney General's Office for possible charges, she said.

I play infrequently and for slightly smaller stakes (depending on the number of folks that show) but still. This sounds like a case of overkill to me. Sheesh.

Most people play poker, "I gamble". "I gamble" means I'll draw to an inside straight when 3's, 9's and one eyed jacks are wild or even Dr. Pepper(10's. 2's. 4's and one eyed jacks). Therefore, nickle/dime poker with family on holidays is my limit.

When I first started at my job many years ago, we'd have a Christmas party in the shop. It was fully sanctioned and catered by the owner, food and booze.  Since there was little else to do, several poker games would start up ranging from nickle, dime quarter ante with a dollar bet limit, up to one table that played no limit.  I never played more than nickel, dime and quarter.

The Law doesn't just "stumble upon" a poker game in a private residence. Obviously someone who has sat at that very table in the past feels they got fleeced and dropped a dime. Comes around-goes around. He'll get his.

My guess is your right and who knows, maybe some guy did get screwed. (out of money he willingly gambled) The link does not really give much info other than the police action may have been part of a larger crackdown on bigger forms of gambling.

I'm just not sure how cozy I am in a world where the laws are written so stupidly that 5-0 can come crashing into my home the next time my fantasy football pals are over enjoying the game. Or poker night or March Madness or whatever. Adults should be able to throw a few bucks around if they want to and the State should not have a monopoly on gambling.

Story just rubbed me wrong I guess. [/rant]

Exactly. This was peanuts. Back room card games with $20K on the table are one thing but this was a small time private game in someone's home. This was hardly "vice". We've had bigger pots at the annual deer camp game, admittedly that is with 20 guys starting around three tables. By the end of the night after opening day when the gang's all there it can get to be a big pot once it's down to one table and just a few guys left. Still, this is hardly organized crime. Yep, some sore loser who thought he was too important ran and cried to mommy.

Yeah....and guess where I live...about 2 miles up the road from Bexhill. Runnin' Buddy, lives i2 streets over in the next subdivision. We are served by the wonderful KCSD that did the raid.  :thatsright:

To say that people are outraged over this is an understatement.

Tuesday night, RB and I were at a meeting and it was over with about 9:15. Neither one of us had eaten dinner, so we went to Perkins to get something to eat. It's about 5 minutes from my house, and on the way home for her. We sat there and talked....of all things the Casey Anthony trial/verdict, and left about 11:15. When we left there were about 6 or 8 tables of people, and a large group of people in a side room that were having some sort of meeting while eating, they were there when we arrived and none had left by the time we did.

At 12:30, 2 men in ski masks - WITH GUNS DRAWN - went into Perkins, not only robbed Perkins itself, but also ALL OF THE CUSTOMERS!! They have yet to be caught.

A week ago, a man in a ski mask - WITH A GUN -went into a Walgreen's on the north side of town, and robbed the pharmacy.

Thankfully no one was injured in either one of these robberies.

Every damn week for months, some business is getting robbed, or there's been a home invasion, or a murder (though probably 98% of the murders here are done by someone who knows the victim - husband, wife, brother, cousin, best friend - it IS the South), and outside of the murders, the most of the bad guys are still on the loose.

But by God, our wonderful County Sheriff can bust a poker game in a subdivision of $175-250+ Thousand dollar homes across the street from one of the best elementary schools in the county.

No one was arrested, and the LEO's confiscated $1000. 8 people who had each put in $125. The woman whose house it was, was interviewed on the news last night. Part of the money was to pay for the food and drink for everyone. They are all friends and tournament play at least once a week.

Read the comments after the newspaper article. Like someone said, the weekly UT football board at the sheriff's office probably has more than $1000 in it. Someone else mentioned that more money than was at this poker game is exchanged over golf holes at the country club down the street in many of the daily games.

Our tax dollars at work.

Busted poker game in private home. 1
Armed robbers caught. 0

Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

Looks to me like they're goin' after the easy target, Deb. (I'm talkin' about the cops.)

Why spend time actually doing police work when you can waltz into a private setting, confiscate a few bucks, have a big writeup in the paper and on the local news, and make it look like you're doing something?

Cheesy. Real cheesy.  :whatever:
