My dog is acting strange

Last night and this morning Toby has been acting odd.  He is going into my closet and other areas around the house digging at the carpet.  He keeps trying to "hide" in dark areas.  He also repeatedly jumped on my bed and "dug" into my pillows and hid under them.  It's like he can't get comfortable so he moves after a few minutes.  I caught him hiding behind my shirts way back in the corner of my closet several times.  Just now he kept going in the toilet area of my bathroom and laying down in there.  It's about the only other area besides a closet in the house right now that is dark because it has no window and has a door. 

I just put his bed down in the toilet area and he got right into it and curled up into a ball.  I shut the door but not all the way, he can get out.  Anyone know what is going on?

BEG, could be the impending move is upsetting him.  If you're worried, maybe a trip to the vet is in order. :???:  Anyway, hope Toby is okay.

Have any of the neighborhood kids/adults been shooting off fireworks?  That eventually messed with my dog's head.  She refused to go on walks around the 4th, just for fear of the loud noises.

I had a dog that would do that from time to time and the vet suggested it might be something like a migraine headache. I was a teenager so I'm not sure what pill we gave her, but I'll bet ibuprofen wouldn't hurt. But, I would call the vet first if I were you. Good luck.

Ibuprofen is not the appropriate medication for a dog (says my veterinarian). Tylenol is okay, but not IBP.

BEG, you've said a couple of times it's been pretty stressful of late. Toby could well be reacting to YOUR stress levels and the energy you're displaying.

Maybe it's time for a hot fudge sundae, a la debk?

That could very well be.  He is still laying down in the toilet area in his bed.  A few days ago he was puking all over the house.  When the dogs are all pukey we normally put their bed in the shower in the master bedroom shower and close the door.  We can see them, they can puke all they want and we can clean it up easier.  Toby normally doesn't like to be in the shower, he thinks he is going to get a bath.  Well the night he was puking all over the place he actually went and sat outside of the shower and just stared at it.  My husband brought his bed over and put it in the shower and he walked right in by himself and laid down.  He also has a history of seizures (he has only had a handful of them).  I wonder if he had one during the night and that is why he is acting weird.  Normally when he has a seizure you know it because he loses control of his bladder and poops a little.

Animals are really sensitive to what's going on around them...and you are stressing BEG. Have you started packing anything yet? Maybe Toby is remembering when you moved out there.

With all the storms we've been having, our cats have been weirder than usual. Even though we haven't had one in since last week, they are still real skittery and are in sight of one of us at all times. They've been thowing up more than usual too.

Puffer...the one who's so sensitive to the weather, has taken to laying either on the table in the breakfast nook with all the windows, or on bartop of the island. This is a new thing for her. We have a large walkin closet in our bedroom that's all mine, except for a tall chest of drawers that is M's. I walked in there this morning to put away clean clothes, and didn't turn the light on. Imagine my surprise when I reached for a hanger on the rack about 12" above the top of the chest and hit a furry body!!! She's all black and was laying on top of the chest - I didn't even notice she was there. She chirped and I yelped!!

If he continues, you might want to give the vet a call. Better to bother the vet and be sure, especially since it's a holiday weekend.

Naproxen, (generic Alieve), is good too. Sounds like light is definitely givin' him problems. Hate to say it, but it usually means more serious problems. Hope he's okay Beg! I can't stand people, but dogs are my weakness. Just spent $900 on my Dixie Dog for a hysterectomy!

If he was vomitting just a couple of nights ago, I wonder if he doesn't have a bug of some sort, hopefully nothing serious. I think I'd give it until morning and call the vet if he's still acting odd.

BEG if it's a stomach thing that could be the reason. Add the stress and upheaval at your house and he's probably out of sorts. If it's sensory/nerves and not a bug, you could get him a compression garment. http://www.thundershirt.com/

BEG, it's probably a combination of early fireworks and pure old nerves. Blue had that first seizure in over 3 years when SR had the stroke, same day. Dogs are so attuned to us. And schnauzers are truly sensitive dogs. I had 3 of them at one time. Have you tried feeding less and giving hamburger and rice? That might help. Or a pepcid might help. Blue had such a sensitive tummy that I had to give him an antacid before every meal.
