Saw Super 8 today
« on: June 11, 2011, 12:47:07 AM »
I actually enjoyed it even though it shares the same theme as just about every recent big money sci-fi thriller; evil US government/military vs misunderstood alien.  It was exciting and suspenseful and the child actors were surprisingly good IMO.  Bogged down in a few spots with teenage angst but overall it was a very fun film and I would recommend it to anybody that liked any of the early Spielberg films, I have read that is very similar to E.T. and The Goonies, but I never saw those so I can't make the comparison.  I had fun and my son and his friend enjoyed it as well.

* edited to add that if you do see it stick around for the credits, there's a very funny scene hidden in there.

Huh, the trailers all made it out to be more of a horrorish kind of film with a big scary alien going after kids.
I GOT BANNED AGAIN

I'm being dragged off to see it in a few minutes.  Had never heard of it, but am now a bit prepared.  If it turns out to be even close to ET or Goonies I'll be pleased since I enjoyed both.

From what I understand, it's pretty much "What if E.T. were more aggressive?"  It even ends like E.T. with the kid watching the spaceship take off.

It's like ET in those respects you mention, but as the OP points out there's the teenage angst; far too much of it for my liking.  I can see how it would entertain children of a certain age, but I slept through the bulk of it.  Didn't come close to be as good as ET or Goonies.

Wasn't Elliot a teenager?

I haven't seen it in a long time, but I'm remembering Elliott as a prepubescent.  Maybe someone with a better memory can say for sure.
