Olbermann accuses Ed Schultz of trying to ‘silence’ Michael Moore on bin Laden

Keith Olbermann defended Michael Moore against former MSNBC colleague Ed Schultz, who criticized the filmmaker’s misgivings about the killing of Osama bin Laden.

“I believe, with great regret, that the pragmatic circumstances of keeping Bin Laden alive outweighed, very narrowly, what Michael is addressing,” Olbermann said in a video posted to his website Thursday. “But for him to then be accused of ‘intellectual liberal hand-wringing’ by a supposedly liberal commentator on a supposedly liberal television network, is outrageous.”

“What I object to, is those who want to silence those who disagree with me,” added Olbermann, who is poised to host his own show on Current TV, also called “Countdown With Keith Olbermann.”

As The Huffington Post pointed out, it was Schultz who criticized Moore in a recent segment while decreeing that “the intellectual liberal hand-wringing needs to stop in this country.”

“We’ve lost something of our soul here in this country,” Moore said after the U.S. raid that killed the al Qaeda leader, declaring that in America, “everybody has their day in court no matter how bad of a person, no matter what piece of scum they are.”

1. Was anyone Really trying to silence Moore or is the
 dissent and disagreement with his opinion being expressed?
I saw nothing that attempted to actually silence Moore, just points of disagreement with his position.

I seem to recall Moores passionate anger toward bin laden shortly after 9-11-01. Is it possible he may have been so incensed with that event he, himself may have called for bin ladens demise, back then?

3. Disagreement is not "silencing," KO. Ed spoke his opinion, MM spoke his,
 now you're offering yours. And we, the audience, can decide for ourselves who is more "correct".

20. sometimes it goes beyond disagreeing
 sometimes people don't say "I disagree", they say "shut up".

We heard a lot of people saying "shut up" during the Bush administration, and we're hearing some of it now.

4. K&R. With Schultz beating up on MM and siding with the Hannitys
 of the world on that Common appearance at the WH, he might as well go back to his Repuke roots. I stopped listening to the guy in the afternoons, although with his 4-day work weeks, I might listen again today if he has Mike Papantonio (who rocks) subbing for him.

5. yeah, Schultz's republican sensibilities ooze out every
 once in a while when he's not thinking and is trying to get back in favor with the DLC types. He has a lot to atone for with all his union support and demands that O admin start supporting unions, stop the extension of the bush tax cuts, and support of single payer.

The vigor of his hippy bashing these last couple of days have left me much less of a fan.

8. That's what I thought when I first heard him talking
 at some book panel. He was the more conservative panelist and it seems that's his bent whenever he's unscripted for very long.

15. Divide and Conquer - Progressives vs. Democrats
 even though they are allies. Classic strategy. They frame "Progressives" as the horrible, far left wing of the Democratic party.

Progressives are apparently the evil in the Democratic party, and *just like* the tea party is to the Republicans.

When are we going to stop allowing valid criticism to keep us from standing with our brothers and sisters in the Democratic party? We don't have to agree, you know, and polarizing each other as too fervent on one issue misses the point, that we can change things to the better for ALL of us if we don't get sucked into petty battles like Republicans want us to do.

I stand with the Dems, even if I don't get all of my needs met, and yes, sometimes I bitch about the lack of progress on the gay-rights front. Does it mean I'm going to be a Republican? Hell no.
