Edited because apparently attempting to help people out is a big mistake at DU.

1. If AT&T know about it can't they just shut it down?

I mean don't they have control over their own network?

5. Not if you make the call...

And why would they care it's no skin off their noses... If I read this right that's the thing, is they get you to make the call by claiming something serious is happening to someone you love. Once you have dialed the number it's your call and you are responsible...

I read the snopes piece and it's a mixed bag. The thing is true but not all numbers in 809 charge you and other area codes have been used...

2. I'm averaging a call/month from the DR.

U.S. telecoms should be either blocking this, or playing a recorded message about the risk before each call to the DR is completed.

3. Anyone reading the Snopes entry will see that...

you've misrepresented their words.

"Snopes verifies it's true" is far from accurate. Nice try.

8. Actually it was the person who sent me the e-mail

Edited on Thu Apr-21-11 05:56 PM by walldude
who misrepresented and if you bothered to read my other post you'd see that I explained the snopes thing.

But hey, it's a slow day. Feel free to follow me around and post bullshit.

You have to be the only person on this board who would berate someone for trying to help.

Oh and I notice you didn't mention anything about AT&T saying it's true.. is that because they do? Yes they do. But hey if the call comes in go ahead and return it, ther eis nothing I would like better than to see you eat a few grand just to spite me.

9. NOT MY ****ING LINK

I SAID I WAS PASSING ALONG AN E-MAIL..

But hey AT&T says it's true and Snopes says it's a mixed bag.

So go ahead and call the number when they call you. I'm sure it's totally safe.

10. OK NEVERMIND.. IF THE ****ING CALL COMES IN RETURN IT

WHAT THE **** DO I CARE IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IT. Snopes says its a mix and AT&T says it's real. Gee I'll play it safe and avoid the calls. You guys go ahead and call the DR I'm sure you won't have any problems.

this place is a ****ing joke. you try to help someone and you get beat down for it.

15. Yeah and the AT&T link verifies it as true.

And it happened to the guy who sent me the link so I figured better safe than sorry but apparently I'm wrong. As usual.

Do you yell at everyone walldude? or just people who choose to disagree with you?

Walldude seems to claim that it was someone else that scammed, but his vehemence makes me think he was the scammee.

I do not answer any calls from unknown numbers and definitely would not return a call from an unknown number.

Oh, and not sure what the OP was about, but it's totally weird, I got a call on my cellphone from AT&T, I think it was an 877 #, I ignored it because I figured they dialed the wrong #, they said they were confirming an appt.

They really are some of the nastiest people you could ever meet.

I've seen him in other threads too doing the same thing.

Arguably, only surpassed by IanDB in terms of miserable, vile personage.

They are nasty and perpetually angry people. Look how fast they turn on one another and even their liberal icons when they step out of line just the smallest bit. Can you imagine how they treat people in real life toward whom they are indifferent or those they dislike? Look at the thousands of video clips out there of confrontations between liberals and conservatives. Nine times out of ten it is the "tolerant" libs who starts screaming and hurling vile epithets and ad hominems at their foe. Just miserable creatures.

Scams of this sort have been going on for nearly two decades.

Also the reason I don't answer e-mails from people I don't know (Spam filters work) and phone calls where I don't recognize the number or it's not local.

You don't have to be over-the-top paranoid, DUmmies, just minimally aware.

I can't believe this is back...

When I was part of AT&T, I and a few others put together a newsletter that contained information on the international direct-dialed call scam.

The Dominican Republic was always a problem with this, as well as Vanuatu, Moldova, and a couple other destinations that slip my mind. This was big in the day of telephone line modems - often a virus would place phone calls in the middle of the night..

Why - The short version:

A foreign company, and the government of the international destination setup a revenue sharing scam for calls that come in from certain other countries. Since the USA is 'super wealthy' - we are targeted as a source of easy money.

The policy was AT&T would adjust this type of call ONCE and only ONCE, as the international destination would get paid for the call, regardless. But since I haven't been there in 11 years, policies may have changed (and since its been 11 years, my nondisclosure agreement has expired, allowing me to mention this)
