Who's up for a road trip ???!!!
« on: March 12, 2011, 10:34:40 PM »
Ahhh, the road trip, the quintessential twentieth century expression of American freedom. Nothing comes close to eliciting a sudden youthful exuberance than an out of the blue off the cuff suggestion to bolt from one's present location and just go, anywhere, just jump in the car and go.

Lately I've been feeling itchy, the cabin fever thing. There is an old saying about house guests and fresh fish, after three days they stink. Well Old Man Winter has stuck around too long, if he doesn't get out of my way he's going to get kicked square in the nuts. My wander bone is pulsing and I'm feeling the need to travel, it's been a while.

What say you? Where would you go?

Almost forgot, Williamsburg Virgina. Haven't been there since '78.

That's about the last time I was there, too. Don't remember a damned thing about it....... :rotf:

Is there still a Busch Gardens there?  They had a few good roller coasters.

I went to the Busch gardens in Tampa - pretty damn cool for someone that had never seen a "ride" that couldn't be packed onto the back of a truck before.

...

What say you? Where would you go?

I'd love to do a 'round Australia trip - take the boat and fish my way around the northern coast then come back through the center (desert crossing).

I'd like to do the same sorta thing in the US - but would probably get my ass shot the first time I encountered peak hour traffic.

Closest thing I have to a road trip was a drive from Mobile to New Orleans and back. About ten hours of driving in one day, and on only three hours of sleep. Was pretty damn tired when I got home.

Key West. Long road trip...but eventually I would get there( drive from Miami to Key West can take as long as Miami to Atlanta!  :censored: )

If I could fly - and had the funds - Florence, Italy. A one-way ticket, I'll buy a return sometime after January 21, 2013. Maybe.

Route 66.  Every bit of available surviving pavement.  Where the route changed over time (usually, rerouting through cities), using the oldest possible routing.  Patronizing as many route-side restaurants and motels as practical.

Bonus: doing it in a '57 Bel Air convertible.

I want to see the redwoods.  Someday, I'm going to load my little car with a 2-man tent, some camping stuff, and my youngest kid, and we're going to go from one KOA campground to the next and just go there.  :-)

If I had my druthers and could make a road trip, this is what I would do.

I go places to see people, not things.

I'd start off from here on the roof of Nebraska, head over to Wisconsin to see Revolution, then dip down into Illinois to see thundley4, and cross over to western Pennsylvania to see mamacags, then head up to see all the upstate New Yorkers (Carl, BlueStateSaint, Karin), and then head on to New Hampshire and stop for a while to see NHSparky, then dip down into Massachusetts and see miskie, formerlurker, and other members here from Massachusetts, then go further down to visit my good friend and colleague Ballygrl in New Jersey, and then DixieBelle and Linda (from our old home; not from here) in Virginia, and USA4ME and BadCat in North Carolina, and JohnnyReb in South Carolina.

It'd be like a triangle radiating from the eastern slope of the Sandhills of Nebraska, Sparky and John being the other angles.

Then headed home, I'd stop to see debK and chris_ in Tennessee, angle a little bit down in Missouri to see Tanker, and then up again to see TVDOC and Eupher in northern Missouri, and finally, Airwolf in the Omaha area as the last stop before arriving home.

And all other members in between these points, again, Sparky in New Hampshire and John in South Carolina being the other angles on the "triangle."

If I missed anybody, it was due to a lapse of memory and ignorance of where everybody's at, geographically, not intentional.

edited to add Tucker to the list, wherever he happens to be; sorry for the omission

This!  :)

Thanks.  When stationed in Texas and visiting home-folks in Michigan, I made the return journey relaxing, in part by using old Route 66 through Missouri..  Fed my desire to do the whole thing.

When I was in Jr. High, my family did a road trip up the west coast, camping at various campsite (lots of KOA's) along the way, then we visited my cousins in WA.  I'd love to do the same thing, but go up into British Columbia this time and come back with a loop through Montana.  I've gone backpacking in the Sierras, and I love them.  I really want to see the Rockies.  There is so much beautiful nature out here.

I have four states left, before I can say I have been to all 48, so it's Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Oregon.

I'll be gone for a while.
