When it comes to homicide, the truly basic rule dating from the ancient common law of England is 'You're alive until you're dead.'  Anyone stepping in to hurry the process is crossing a very, very clear line.

Homicide of this sort would average a 10 year sentence before she was eligible for parole.

Commitment for criminal insanity could entail a life-time sentence.
