Saudi police open fire during protest
« on: March 10, 2011, 04:31:58 PM »
Saudi police fired rubber bullets Thursday to disperse at least 200 Shiite protesters in Qatif, a town in the oil-rich Eastern Province, local human rights activists said.

At least three people were injured and are currently being treated at Qatif's hospital, the activists said.

A spokesperson for the Saudi Interior Ministry could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Qatif protesters were calling for the release of prisoners held without trial and for political reforms. Some 26 people were arrested after similar protests last week in Qatif and nearby Al-Ahsa, but they were later released.

Protesters were also angered by the arrest of Sheik Tawfiq al-Amer, a Shiite cleric who has also now been released.

Wall Street Journal

The rare violence raised concern about a crackdown ahead of planned protests after Friday prayers in different cities throughout the oil-rich kingdom. Violence there could reverberate through the world's markets because of the importance of Saudi oil exports.

I think most of this is islamist inspired and not democracy advocates. The saud's may eventually go down but they will be replaced by islamists. Expect the gas prices to go through the roof. terrorists have been trying to blow the wells for years

Why didn't politicians quit making fun of Palin and Drill Baby, Drill and just drill here and now.  We shouldn't need to depend on foreign nations' internal stability to access oil.  Thanks to liberals, we're hamstrung on energy independence and should Saudi Arabia fall to Islamists, who, if not already, will most assuredly co-opt any democracy uprising as they have elsewhere, WE.ARE.SCREWED.

Maybe that's what some of these people wanted all along.

I can see gas spiking 10 50 cents/gal in the next couple of days.

And that's if the "Day of Rage" is more like a bunch of DUmmies throwing a temper tantrum.

If there are REAL disruptions, $5/gal WILL seem cheap.  One tanker being attacked, sunk, blocking the Strait of Hormuz, oh, shit...

House passes bill to sue OPEC over oil prices
Quote
WASHINGTON | Tue May 20, 2008 2:27pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday allowing the Justice Department to sue OPEC members for limiting oil supplies and working together to set crude prices, but the White House threatened to veto the measure.

The bill would subject OPEC oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela, to the same antitrust laws that U.S. companies must follow.

The measure passed in a 324-84 vote, a big enough margin to override a presidential veto.

The legislation also creates a Justice Department task force to aggressively investigate gasoline price gouging and energy market manipulation.

With 200 Shi'ites I doubt the royal family is too concerned, they're probably just wonder if they really need two planes instead of one to pack them on and throw their asses out of the country.

Relax, it's just a speculative bubble from fear, it will die down. Saudi Arabia isn't going anywhere. Too many nations depend on them, so the protesters won't get as much support and coverage as those in Egypt.

FIFY, the one word change showing how history repeats itself over, and over, and over.

Sounds just like the libtard idiots in 1979.  Again, the more you open your cockholster, the stupider you show yourself to be, junior.

The problems lie in the fact that speculators don't take physical control of the oil, and only have it on paper right?
