Newsflash, vesta--even $150K ain't that much.

I'll do you one better, let's use $120K/yr.  $10K/month.  A nice round number, yes?

Now out of that $120K/year, we take the following:

$27K federal taxes
$6600 in SS taxes
$1800 in Medicare taxes

For a total of $35,400--just to the federal government.  Which leaves us with $84,600.

Now the state gets to take it's piece of the pie.  Lucky me, living in New Hampshire.  No state income tax.  But were I still in California, that income would mean I'd be scratching out a check to the tune of $9200.  Oh, and CA also takes out unemployment insurance AND workman's comp on top of that.  Isn't liberalism wonderful?  Maine would be even worse--nearly $9300.  Massachusetts would be $5900.

But we haven't even gotten to sales taxes, property taxes, vehicle taxes, etc. yet.

But just for shits and giggles, let's just stick with NH property taxes--oh, $6000 per year oughta do.

So now we're down to $78,600.  Whoops--vehicle taxes.  Make that $78,000 even.

That's $6500 a month, in case you were keeping score at home, kids.  Over 1/3 gone before you even get to see it.  Well, that's not entirely true--then you have little things like INSURANCE, medical, dental, HCRA contribution, union dues, etc., that takes about another $3600 a year.

Oh, and let's not forget savings!  Taxpayers aren't paying MY retirement, I gotta put aside for my golden years by myself!  There's another $12K a year.  So now we're down to $62,400 a year, or about $5400 a month.

To make a house payment.  $1800/mo
And heat the house.  And electricity, and water, and sewer.  $400/mo
And vehicle, maintenance, insurance, gas, tolls.  $1000/mo
And maintain the house. $200/mo
And food.  $300/mo
And phone, cable, etc... $200/mo
And credit cards, including ex-wife's (the bitch) $1000/mo
And mother in the nursing home $400/mo

Doesn't leave a whole ****ing lot left over to play with, now does it?

SPARKY-----now you have broken my heart darn you.

Here I thought I was rich, I am warm in the winter and cool in the summer.    I have plenty of food , rice, beans some meat and veges,  a phone, TV cable and my sewing machine. We can afford to own pets, their food and Vet. bills, a public library, fire department, police protection,  running water hot and cold a washer and dryer, 2 Kayaks for fishing or just some quiet time on the water.

We are down to a one salary house hold as I am still waiting to get old enough for SS.---Taxes will be interesting this year as my loss of half the income will place us in a different category and we should get twice the amount of our return as usual.

For us we are living the high life for now, we know in a few years we will have to sell our home and life will have some Big problems for us.

But for now we feel rich, Really, what more can I ask for in life.??  Our library has free tickets to the museums in Boston, art gallery's, and even expos in the area.  P- town has the PARK in the summer with donations excepted to attend any production all summer long.  Winters the theaters with live shows at cut rate for us as seniors, over the age of 50 and the University down the road has live sports from ice hockey to gymnastics.

We found that our local hospital has some of the best food in the area , we can go in to the Caff. at supper time and get a meal from soup to nuts for around $4.00 each. They even have take out for lunch time and people that work in that area can call in a lunch time order and bring it back to work.

Just what does it take to make someone feel wealthy when they bring in $25-30,000 a year for 2 to live on.

Sparky I have never felt as blessed as I do now that I have adjusted to searching for ways to still live high of the hog with little money put down.

One has to learn how to make due with what they have and be greatfull for every good find.

Fine--**** it.  I quit.  Someone else can make up the $50K+ in taxes I pay every year.  I can file bankruptcy and walk away from my bills.

Except I can't.  I'm not wired like that.  I wasn't raised that way.  You know--RESPONSIBILITY and shit like that.

Hey, I'd love a cheap ****ing lunch, but I brown bag it because I can't leave WORK.  You know, that thing most of us do to put OUR OWN food on our tables, clothes on our backs, etc.

I'm not one to live off the labor of others, vesta.  Not my style, never has been, never will be.  Free?  Not a word in my book.

We've got to stop the myth of "the rich are the ones that create jobs" It's not true, they profit more from cutting jobs, acquiring other small businesses and shutting them down. It's the middle class that creates jobs. They are the ones that create small businesses. That's why there are no jobs, the middle class can't get loans and besides that, there are no customers - no demand -because the ones who would make the demand can't get loans either. Every time someone says to me that it's the rich that creates jobs I'm going to say, " No they don't...the middle-class does."
Thanks for that DUmmie. I needed a laugh today and you made me laugh with the stupidity in that post. :rotf:

Hey, I'd love a cheap ****ing lunch, but I brown bag it because I can't leave WORK.  You know, that thing most of us do to put OUR OWN food on our tables, clothes on our backs, etc.

I'm not one to live off the labor of others, vesta.  Not my style, never has been, never will be.  Free?  Not a word in my book.

Sparky, My point is that one does not have to be wealthy to be RICH.  Or vice verse.

Work time Combined with my husbands is over 90 years of paying taxes giving to charity raising 4 kids--on my side-- and helping out family when they needed it. We have weathered the storm of life---in the early 2000's we each lost over $150,00 from our 401k plan, years of toil to see it vanish.  But at no time did we feel poor or downtrodden, we just went on  to work and started saving  over again--not easy to do after 50 years of age.

We listened to Mothers chant on    Save your money for your old age   and never buy on credit unless you can pay it all back with cash next week.

So just once did we buy a new car for $9,000 a KIA , still have it with 50,000 miles on it.---Its a 2001 and in perfect condition.  We bought the Jeep a 2000 repo with 18,000 miles and paid them both off by working over time and doubling and tripling our monthly payments.

We planed on how to survive in case one of us could not work due to death, layoff, or disability.    Never did we expect I would become totally disabled within 15 years but it worked out well so far.

We do take advantage of our AARP , an AAA discount cards  in the summer, it is not like these cards are FREE. Yearly dues have to be paid.

Yes we are thrifty, and look for the best deal we can find for entertainment.    Twice a year the town library has a book sale and boxes and boxes are FREE. We coupon and buy one get one FREE.  We attend town party's and get a day of entertainment FREE.  We check out any and all exhibits for the day attendance is FREE.  When Seniors off -1/4 the price, yes we take them every chance we get.  Local paper has coupons for restaurants we have never gone to before that advertise buy one meal get the other one FREE.

When a book signing comes to town with someone like Stephen King and public attendance is Free, I am the first in line to head out to hear what old Stephen has to say.

You Sparky make it sound like it is a sin to accept any and all offers for anything Free.

All the sad people that lost their homes because they were over their heads in debt they knew they could not afford, still bought Autos with a $500.00 a month bill.  Took their kids to 3 Flags etc. and spent $300.00 for one day to go nuts.----IDIOTS.  With FREE tickets from the library and free parking a day at the Boston Science Museum for kids, will give them something to think about and no one throws up after a ride.

Nothing wrong with shopping for a new suit when the advertisers say---buy one get another one FREE. Tailoring included.

Instead of griping about taxes and people getting something FREE, how about YOU making a game of it, clip coupons, shop the sales, take a date to a FREE chowder festival.  Buy pet food on sale, buy one get one FREE.

Take your savings and put it in a gallon jug, empty your pockets of change every night and put all over time money in that JUG.  Every couple of months empty out the Jug and put the money in a separate savings account.  You can forgo eating out 2 nights a week, figure out the total cost for the meal + tip and stash that money in the jug.

The biggest problem we as Americans have is the ease we let our hard earned money slip away due to impulse buying and --OH< I just have to have that new gizmo's advertised on TV.

Sparky you must have a lovely home to be taxes of $5,000 on it a year. Think about what the taxes will be in 5-7 years from now.

There is nothing immoral about taking advantage of any money saving thing that comes your way.  Go on a savings bender, take 2 months to go freaky with how much you can save,  Free or discount.   Learn to barter and trade, someone could use your old lawnmower, what do they have to trade for it.

Think of me as your mother telling you how to survive.   You are not getting younger Cup Cake, time to take controll of your finances as we never know what will happen tomorrow.---Now go wash your hands and face, brush your teeth and go to bed.

NOTHING in life is free.  Nothing.  Someone has to pay.

Which makes it all the more galling--it's not that fancy.  It's basically an average home.  I shudder to think of what the taxes would be on it in a state like CA, especially if there were a chunk of land involved.  Oh, and it's the freeloaders and looters who want to impose a general sales or income tax ON TOP OF THIS SHIT because THEY don't want to pay their way.

There is nothing immoral about taking advantage of any money saving thing that comes your way.

Except when it comes at the expense of someone else's labor.

Think of me as your mother telling you how to survive.

If you were my mother I'd be suck-starting a shotgun right about now.

Damn Sparky you silver tonged nuke.    I just love it when you insult me, makes my fanny quiver.

Anyway, I see where you are coming from in a way, unfortunately it is the laws that intice people to file bankruptcy, I cannot believe just how easy it is for some people to just walk off from their debts.--i have only known 2 people in my life  [that I know of ] that went that rout and I cannot understand their reasoning. Both had good paying jobs and could have paid their bills but the old credit card factor came up and it was like they went hog wild, everything had to be the most expensive didn't matter if something less expensive and perhaps better came along, they wanted the best, meaning most expensive.

My gripe is the people that KNOW they cannot afford something and put everything the own in others names, cars, boats ,travel trailers, all in mom or dads name.  As the credit cards begin to become a horrid problem say $20,000 or more they begin to hide their jewelery, everything bought on a card that is not clothing.

They put in false police reports as to my stuff was stolen, and collect on homeowners insurance.  Not so long ago I had a coworker ask me if I would STORE her $1,500 Knitting machine.   I was very upset that she would think I would be willing to be part of her illegal and immoral scheme.

Quite a racket and it was their own family's that helped them --great example for the kids don't you think.

So creditors come to try to recoup their losses and find the people living in a expensive apartment with nothing of value, they own nothing but good will furniture as their Leather and teak wood furnishings are in storage owned by their Aunt Nelly.

7 years later they now get their credit back and ----by the way this one worker that I spoke of tells me that within 3 months of the final for bankrupts the credit card CO. were begging her to get one from them as they knew she could not file bankrupt again for a number of years.

A scam on all sides, the card company's that deduct from their taxes when not paid, the bankrupts courts and lawyers, ----one hell of a mess.
As long as they work and pay their parents the money for the car, truck, boat notes they have it made in the shade.

I have no problem with family's that due to health problems or layoffs asking for and receiving assistance, some time shit happens.

Say Sparky, we have a friend in common that is looking for a man, HMMMMMMMMM
