Obama budget ends funding for clean diesel, cuts fuel-cell plan

The Obama administration proposed ending a clean-diesel grant program and cutting research for hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles while spurring the market for electric cars.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's fiscal 2012 budget reduces the Clean Diesel Program's budget from $80 million in 2010 to zero. The program was reauthorized by Congress for five years and a total of $500 million in December.

President Barack Obama is working to realign the U.S. government's vehicle-technology priorities. The White House budget proposes diverting funds from a dozen energy-company tax breaks to help pay for putting 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2015, doubling the share of electricity from clean energy by 2035 and increasing the efficiency of energy use in buildings by 20 percent.

The budget proposal would transform a $7,500 tax credit for buyers of plug-in electric cars into a rebate at the dealership so purchasers wouldn't have to wait to claim the credit on tax returns. Obama, in his State of the Union address last month, reiterated his goal of having 1 million electric vehicles, both plug-in and hybrid electric, on U.S. roads in four years.

1. europe is the leader in clean diesel technology .

cheaper for us companies to buy engines or pay for the technology. hydrogen distribution systems are a long, long way down the road.

Hey DUmmie. We are years away from having an electrical system to support 1 million electric cars, too.

I dunno, from what I have read on it, which is a bit but I don't pretend to be an expert, the fuel-cell tech looks like the only way either electric (And collaterally, hydrogen) are ever going to lead to anything usable, but it's several years off if ever.

They really need to kill the bio-diesel and ethanol crap, though, we just don't raise any crops that have the energy return to make them worthwhile.  Brazil has made great strides with ethanol, but they make it from sugar cane for an 8:1 energy return, instead of corn with 1.5:1 return (At best).  It's a complete waste of money that does nothing but drive up feed corn cost.

I think the hydrogen fuel cells are a better idea than plug in electric cars.

Back when gasoline hit $0.40, and the econobox cars started coming out, I said I hoped to never drive a car that gets 30 miles per gallon. I have that same wish today, and so far, except for rentals, have never been afflicted with a car that gets more than around 25mpg.

Well, I'm safe then! My doolly gets about 12 miles/gal fallin' over a cliff! But I can haul a 10,000 lb horse trailer when it's loaded! Wonder how they're gonna do that with a Volt?

Park it UNDER a tractor-trailer.   :rotf:

I don't have a dooley, but my diesel gets 20 mpg solo, and towed 10,000# of trailer and equipment from Wisconsin to Virginia, twice, and averaged 15 mpg doing that.  Not bad for a non Power Stroke Ford.   :-)

Obama has and will always put all his..er our eggs in a proven loser of eggs, BIG GOVERNMENT.

Let's not forget that Obama was going to file bankruptcy before he got that ghost written Ayers book deal. You know because being a complete economic illiterate is a sure sign of superior intellect.
