Black History Month was made for people like Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN).

However, it increasingly looks as though the tea party heroine not only never paid attention to African-American history but seeks to re-write it in her own image.

"Other than Native Americans who were here, all of us have the same story," Bachmann told the National Press Club at a "Tea Party Express Forum" Tuesday.

She went on to insist that all Americans are descendants of "a risk-taker from their home country, doesn't matter what the country is, but they took a risk, and they came here."

"And they knew when they came here they weren't coming for a welfare state," Bachmann continued. "They were coming here for the thrill of writing their own ticket. Who did we attract? People that wanted a better life and were willing to do what it took to get it."

I wonder how many "descendants of slaves" would be willing to give up their housing, food stamps, cash for baby mamas, cable TV on the HD 54 incher, cell phones etc, etc, to move back to the squaller of their "homelands" that they were so cruelly ripped out of?

The DU as a whole is ignorant of slavery and what it was about.  My mole had quite a thread going over there once upon a time.  I posted about how the slaves were allowed to work for others when they were done working for their master for the day.  I posted that most slaves were paid.  I posted that a lot of slaves bought their freedom by working for actual money after they had finished their day on the 'plantation'.  I posted that some became business people after they bought their freedom ...

The DU was absolutely appalled that I could post those 'LIES!!!'  There were a few that supported me but they were few and far between.

It was amusing.

Actually we were forced to celebrate Asian/Pacific islander and Hispanic history month in the Navy. As well as black, womens, Native American and so on history month. Actually black history month started for us in January and went through the month of February. I am just wondering when gay history month will be.

According to the records, the church I was baptised in, raised in and seldom attend now was 2/3's black before The Civil War and the blacks contributed half the money collected. Makes you wonder where they got money doesn't it.

The Union Army split the church and made the whites leave it to the blacks after the Civil War.

I find it amazing that our country has become so afro-centric that 11% of our population controls much of our actions due to the MSM and guilt.

When I took a history class in college the professor was telling all the things I mentioned above about the slaves.  The black kids in the class were standing up telling him he was lying.  It was amazing.  That was not the truth they knew and it was not a truth they wanted to know.

I never could figure out why they were so adamant in their denial.

And I know a few people who actually voted for him for that reason, they wanted to say "look at me I'm not racist I voted for a black man", that really did a lot of good because guess who's bitching now about him? the ones that voted for him for the wrong reason. Gene Simmons basically said the truth when he said he voted for Obama, it was a chance to be history making, and now he says he wants to take back his vote.

He would not have been nominated, had he not been black. A black face reading off a teleprompter in clear English was a dream come true for democrats. If he'd been white, he would have been a joke. Slavery was a step up from the way White tenant farmers were treated in those days.  A million Irish died because selling the grain they raised was more important to the landlords than their lives were, Black slaves in America never suffered any such atrocity.

Exactly! America has used various nationalities to be prejudiced against! The Italians took their turn, the Irish, the Polish, the Russians, we're supposed to feel more sorry for the Africans because everyone in the world, including their own people, took advantage of their ignorance.

Does Cuba have a day for their heritage, how about Jamaica, or Argentina, or Brazil? More of them ended up there than in America, yet we are held responsible for all the inhumanity to man!

While all of that is true the fact remains they were slaves.

They were forced, under arms, into a life they did not choose and would not accept if left to their own devises.

The founders revolted against the crown for less than that and today we're practically up in arms over less.

Imagine being told by your employer you had to work 40 to 50 hours for free but after that anything you earned you could keep for yourself OR give to him for the right to finally start being your own man even though you were a few  thousand miles from your original home.

Slavery is still slavery.

OTOH: I'm actually, even in modern times, OK with voluntary indentured servitude and I think any form public assistance should include mandatory labor. Those who are habitually unable to support themselves should be sold to whoever will pay for their support in return for their work.

But this implies a "voluntary" state of affairs. The institution the abolitionists railed against was anything but voluntary and no person here would or should accept the terms it imposed on its victims.
