Egypt’s military backs democratic civilian rule
« on: February 12, 2011, 03:55:40 PM »
The protesters in Egypt have deposed a brutal dictator and replaced him with a military junta and now all of a sudden the DUmmies believe that the evil Generals are going to bring peace and love to the land. If it had been our Military they would be screaming their fool heads off.
Happy thoughts here

Egypt’s military backs democratic civilian rule

By Reuters
Saturday, February 12th, 2011 -- 1:36 pm

– Egypt's new military rulers told the nation on Saturday they were committed to civilian rule and democracy after Hosni Mubarak's overthrow and said they would respect all treaties, a move to reassure Israel and Washington.

Pro-democracy activists in Cairo's Tahrir (Liberation) Square, the epicenter of an earthquake of popular protest that unseated Mubarak, have vowed to stay there until the Higher Military Council accepts their agenda for democratic reform.

1. Actually, I would love to see them back out of their treaty with Israel and open the

border with Gaza. There is very little that Israel could do about it unless they wanted to start a war. But if that doesn't happen now, I think that a democratically elected government in Egypt will eventually do it. Egypt's relations with Israel are not very popular on the Egyptian street.

Well, there is always that.

3. Good for them. It is interesting how different countries have different types of military

who they are, what they are for, what they do, etc etc etc.

What color is the sky in your world?

5. I hope they are serious about this. A democracy does not threaten

their position as the Army. Egypt will still need that army. I think the real problem is going to be the same one we have - corporations who want to run the show. I am hoping Egypt is going to be smarter on this than we are.

Of course Egypt will be smarter, America Evil everyone else good.

Of course if Egypt was so smart how did they allow a 30 year dictatorship in the 1st place?

I think the border with Gaza is closed to keep the Palestinians out of Egypt, and to keep weapons trafficking to a minimum.

It's a military junta.

Other than small right-wing military juntas bowing to democratic pressures, has anyone heard of a military junta that willingly gave up power?

It's not going to be sweetness and light in Egypt.

Egypt wants the displaced arabs Palestinians crossing that border about as much as they want a hole in their foot.

For as often as they use the term "Marshall law", they sure as hell are clueless when it comes to an understanding of what the term means.

The military in Egypt doesn't want the Muslim Brotherhood in control anymore then we do. If they folow the same route the Iranians did back in 78 the military would suffer as much if not more then the civilians when the nuts take over.

Exactly correct. In Iran, as soon as the mullahs pushed the "students" aside, they immediately hung every officer in the armed forces. They took care of the military before they started hanging, shooting, stoning, and beheading the man in the street. The Egyptian generals now in charge know that a takeover by the Religion of Peace means certain death. The question is whether they will have the means to prevent it.

They have too damned much of the best military equipment US taxpayer money can buy.  If that isn't sufficient to keep their heads in close union with their shoulders, we're all ****ed.

Didn't Obama just sell them a bunch more within the last couple of months?  Maybe he did know this was gonna happen and wanted the new mullahs well armed.

Yeah, free elections sound great to us in a secular democracy.  Of course Italy and Germany were secular democracies when the Fascists were freely-elected into positions where they could make their moves (Partly through creating disorder in the streets and then promising to bring it to an end).  Where a quarter of the population backs a theocratic regime, it means you may get one free election to freely vote a government into power that won't see any need to have any more of those.

I'm certain that the military at this time are for free and fair elections --

It seems that the secular parties are going to split the ticket six ways to Sunday - leaving a fairly easy win for the Radical Islamists.

If the MB gets control, abrogates the treaty, and attacks Israel, there isn't ever going to be a crowd problem in Tahrir Square again, at least not for a few hundred years.

Chances would be decent that Tahrir Square would be turned into glass.

It's a question of altitude and amplitude, but yes, that's the means of which I speak.  I'm pretty sure the IDF would use low-yield weapons and high airbursts given their own proximity and the prevailing wind impact on effective downwind patterns, though.

One wonders how quickly the Iranians would put their nukes into play.

If they have any ready to use then that would be one thing. The Israelis on the other hand have both a means of delivery and the numbers to bury most of their Arab neighbors in radioactive dust for years.

I'm not too sure that, once Cairo or Tehran had been turned into glass, that the other Arabs would be all that enthusiastic to carry on.

I wasn't talkin' about what we'd do, which is probably nothing, I'm talking about what the Izzies would do.

Their possession of nuclear weapons has never been acknowledged, but they have had a serious black nuclear program for more than forty years and in strategic circles their possession of nukes has been considered a given for at least the past 30 years.  They've had nuclear-capable homemade guided missiles since the late 60s, the current generation is pretty new, but Google 'Jericho III missile' if you want to read up on it.
