Interesting, in reading about the cast list 1 of the cast is Graham Beckel the conservative brother of liberal Bob Beckel.

As far as adaptations of long and ponderous books go, this one is at the top with the best of them.  

If you've already read the book, I won't ruin the movie for you.  The casting was very good right down to Rearden's sniveling do-gooder brother (brother-in-law?).  Watching the two bad guys (the bald one and the fat one), I felt like I was watching a reunion show of 'Not Necessarily The News'.  Thank God they didn't try to ruin it with a bunch of comic relief and superfluous sex scenes -- there's only one of those.  It's a serious movie and the directors do a good job of creating that atmosphere even though it's a piece of fiction.  I thought some of the CGI effects of the Galt Line were a bit cheap-looking, but the scenery and panoramas were very impressive.  I enjoy trains, so I had a really good time watching a lot of it.  The dialogue is a little stilted but it's no worse than your average Kevin Smith movie.

My biggest complaint?  $10.50 for a ticket and that's in flyover country.  If you can find a cheaper matinee or don't mind paying that kind of cash for a seat in a movie theater, go see this movie.  Compared to the garbage I saw during the previews, this movie is 4 stars.  Another romantic comedy with Steve Carrell?  You don't say.  Another kid movie that will bore their unlucky parents to tears?  How unexpected.

Objectively, I would give it a 3 1/2.

The theater was about 3/4 fulll, but it was showing on two screens at the same time.

Right.  I'm sure he actually saw that.

The people I saw were polite, clean, and quiet.  Nobody had their cell phone on or talked through the movie.  The crowd wasn't all white people either (and no, Howard Dean, the cleaning crew did not sneak in to watch it.  Those men and women paid for their tickets along with everybody else.)

Thank God Angelina Jolie is not in this movie.  Taylor Schilling does a fine job.

We saw it Friday night, and all I can truthfully say is that while I am exceedingly happy it was finally made, I really wish it had been made better. We went for the content, NOT the execution of the film, ya know?

John Aglialoro held the film rights from Leonard Peikoff for 18 years, and was unable for a host of reasons I won't go into here to get it made by a major studio, and literally had to start shooting within hours of losing them. Hence, for a little over $10 million of his own money, we end up with what we have now, and while I am in no way stating that the final product should not have been made, I really do wish that he had a bigger budget to work with.

This is especially worrisome to me, given that Aglialoro has already stated that future installments of the film may not be made if this first chapter fails.

This is particularly scary, given the numbers: The film cost $10 million to make, so if it makes $100 million worldwide (which is exceedingly hopeful, albeit less-than-likely), Aglialoro has to give half of that to the distributors, leaving him with a helluva lot less than he's already said he would need to gross in order to even think of starting production on Part II.

And this is why, despite my love of All Things Rand, I really wish Aglialoro had either negotiated new terms with Peikoff, or simply let the project lapse altogether, and focus his passion, time and money toward the advancement of Open Objectivism and the free-markets.

In my humble opinion, if we weren't prepared to bring our biggest gun to the gunfight, we really shouldn't have brought a ****ing Ginsu knife.

I'm really sorry, but after two days of consternation over this film, that's how I feel.

Don't a lot of movies make as much or more after the DVD release?  I seem to remember VHS movie releases taking six months to a year before they would show up on the shelves.  Now it's happening 60-90 days after the movie leaves the theater.  I'm hoping the DVD sales do well and from what I've read of DVD/Blu-Ray sales vs. theater attendance over the last couple of years, I think it may be the case.  I certainly did not expect to pay $10+ for a ticket... I was expecting to pay $7 and some change.

I keep an eye out for this kind of thing when I go to the movie theater, but the only product placement I saw were Dell computers.  It may have been entirely coincidental but there were two large closeups of Dell logos during the film.  Other than Dagny Taggart driving a Toyota Camry as her personal car (and someone asking "does this car get good gas mileage?"), I didn't see much else that could be considered blatantly obvious product placement.  Unless you could identify a Toyota Camry just by looking at the nose of the car, you might have mistaken it for anything else.  I know some movies go out of their way to incorporate or block branding in their film in return for payment.  I was just curious if they had done that in this case.

That's true for many films, Chris, but not so much with movies that come in installments and/or sequels. The Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter movies are notable exceptions to this, given that they have phenomenally large fan bases going in, and can make even more money by releasing installments individually, then again as boxed sets.

I'm truly hoping that the same goes for Atlas, and we plan on buying copies of the DVD to support the project.
