$3.47 for the last few days but around here it could jump 25¢ a gal in a heartbeat.  This is a far cry from the 25¢ a gal when I first started buying gas

Obama may revive $25 billion auto loan program
Washington— U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz says the Obama administration is considering reviving the moribund $25 billion auto loan program by revising lending criteria and seeking a new round of loan requests.

Created by Congress in 2007, the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program hasn’t made a new loan since March 2011 and came under scrutiny after two of five companies that received loans halted production. The auto loan program was created to spur the production of more fuel-efficient vehicles in the United States.

“We are looking at what a new (loan) solicitation might look like. That’s an ongoing discussion,” Moniz said in a Detroit News telephone interview on Monday from New Jersey, where he was traveling to a speech. “We are actively looking at what might be an effective new (request for proposals).”

By now every driver knows the drill: The price of gasoline ratchets up, there's an outcry among motorists who feel gouged at the pump and then things settle down as the higher price becomes the new normal.

Well, AAA has come up with a sobering statistic: the average price of gasoline will surpass $3 per gallon Tuesday for the 1,000th consecutive day. That's never happened before, the motoring organization says.
In case you're wondering, the current streak began on Dec. 23, 2010. Today, the national average for a gallon of regular is $3.52, according to AAA's daily price tracking service. That's a nickel a gallon less than the average so far this year. And unless there's another recession, AAA forecasts that a price floor of $3 a gallon is basically here to stay.

Something weird happened in Nebraska--I think it's specific to Nebraska--beginning the first of the month.

It used to be that pure gasoline cost ten cents--always ten cents--more than gasoline that's 10% ethanol.

Now suddenly there's a universal twenty-cent spread, currently $3.39 versus $3.19.

The adulterated gasoline is still 10% ethanol.

But whereas pure gasoline was 87 octane and the other stuff 89 octane, now they're both 87.

There was something about this in the newspapers a couple of weeks ago, but I forgot to read it, and employees of places where I purchase gasoline can't explain it either.

Are they messing with gasoline anywhere else?

Dunno, Frank, but I will say that gas prices have dropped significantly in the past month or so. Right now, in north-central Missouri, a gallon of 87 octane "unadulterated" goes for $2.959.

I've heard it said that the reason for this, and perhaps that extends over to the availability of 87 vice 89 octane up in NE, is the refineries are switching over to winter blend gasoline. It's ostensibly easier to refine than summer blend.

Nebraska drivers may notice gas pump price changes

LINCOLN, Neb. — The options Nebraska drivers find at the gas pump are changing because of a shift in the fuel supply.

Nebraskans have been used to the mid-level 89-octane fuel with ethanol being the cheapest option. Now the regular 87-octane fuel will generally be cheaper.

The change is happening because oil companies have switched what fuel they pump into terminals in Lincoln, Omaha and Doniphan. Instead of bringing in 87-octane fuel, the oil companies are delivering 84-octane fuel.

Drivers elsewhere have likely already seen similar changes at their gas stations, but oil companies are just now making the switch in the Midwest. So gas stations in the region will be deciding over the next few months which gasoline blends to carry and what prices to charge.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension educator John Hay said either ethanol or premium gas is mixed with the lower octane fuel to make the 87- and 89-octane fuels offered at the pump.

"This sub-octane fuel needs to be blended with other fuel types to make it the 87-octane level or above we need at the pump," Hay said. "So basically, 87 with ethanol replaced the 89 with ethanol, and our low-cost option at the pump is now 87 with ethanol."

Hay said most cars will run fine on 87-octane fuel, but drivers should check their owner's manuals to be sure.

"To take advantage of higher octanes, you need a car with higher compressions, such as a high-performance sports car," Hay said.

And using 87-octane fuel shouldn't have any effect on gas mileage.
