"Redneck Day" at high school upsets parent

Many schools celebrate school spirit by designating special days such as Pajama Day or Crazy Hat Day.

One local school's theme for its spirit day has rubbed some parents the wrong way.

Thursday was designated as "Redneck Day" at Blue Valley North High School. The mother of one student, who asked not to be identified, said she was so offended that she kept her daughter home from school.

"It's a derogatory term, not just directed at African-Americans," (huh?) she said. "To anyone, it's a slang, derogatory term. And why would this be used as a spirit day?"

3. Class bigotry is bigotry. Period. n/t

You should know. Most DUmmies are bigoted against those with more class than themselves, which is almost everyone.

7. CLASS bigotry?

Sorry, but that dog won't hunt.

I know plenty of wealthy people who would qualify for the title "Redneck".

10. So how often do you really hear the affluent described as "rednecks"

and "white trash"?

I guess it must surely be some sort of coincidence, but those words are pretty much always applied to the rural poor, but seldom, if ever, to people who actually have any wealth or power.

15. Ah, see now you're conflating redneck with white trash.

They are two seperate terms.

And I actually HAVE heard some affluent people described as rednecks. Many of those rednecks, are in fact my own family members.

Please define "white trash".

22. Yeah, my dad must have felt so much better as a kid when he went to town

from the mining camp where he grew up, and the people there sneered at his bare feet and patched overalls and declared him a redneck, rather than white trash.

What a difference that must have made!

Like I said, when we start seeing stupid, hateful assholes with four names and trust funds (you know, the people who really do run the world) denounced as rednecks, then I will grant your point. But being a person from rural southern roots, I have had some experience with class prejudice, most of it at the hands of people who imagine themselves to be enlightened liberals.

You see it daily on any posts having to do with the south on DU.

I must point out that meanings and uses of words change over time. Surely you must see and admit this point. If not, then there is no use in futher discussion with you.

That is rich coming from a member of the group that can find offense in the least likely places.

What would the DUoble standard DUchebags think about having Lazy Ni**er day?

Or how about Fanatical Terrorist Muslim day?

Or how about Illegal Welfare Mexican day?
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Face it, DUmmies--redneck day is a hell of a lot more acceptable to you than "Hood Rat Day."  If that happened, Al and Jesse would be down there protesting with their rent-a-mobs faster than you could say, "feigned outrage."

Sounds like a plan. I'd rather have them dress "faaaabulously" then have their boxers showing all the time or the kids who dress in all black.
