Saddam sought US friendship before Kuwait invasion: cable
 Source: alarabiya

A newly released diplomatic cable showed that Saddam Hussain has tried his best to win a U.S. alliance over what he saw as UAE’s and Kuwait’s selfishness over oil prices prior to his invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

1. WHOA! It sounds like he wanted to be paid for the war against Iran!
Saddam told the ambassador that “Iraq is sick of war,” the cable reported.

In 1990 Saddam urged oil-exporting countries to raise oil prices, but Kuwait spearheaded opposition in OPEC by pumping more oil with lower prices.

Saddam told Glaspie that it is Iraq’s victory against Iran that “made a historic difference to the Arab World and the West,” and that Iraq “needs a marshal plan.”

“Iraq suffered 100,000 of casualties, and is now so poor that war orphan pension will soon be cut, yet rich Kuwait will not even accept OPEC discipline,” the cable quoted the ambassador.

Saddam said that U.S. maneuvers will encourage the UAE and Kuwait to ignore conventional diplomacy, and he described both countries as "selfishness” to the extent he could not tolerate.

2. here's the cable via Glenn Greenwald...
but how new is this? Maybe we didn't have the cable, but we knew a lot about it, even before the Gulf War started...

5. We know that the fix is in when the Bush Presidents have gotten
off scott free without the slightest hint of investigation. In my mind, that makes President Obama
complicit in this matter.

Two separate Bush presidencies you idiot and yes, there were investigations, i.e. Robb-Silverman Commission.

7. Karzai and Maliki better watch out. This is what happens to the US's "friends"
 when they stop being useful.

Like I've said before, we are at war with all of them. The US doesn't give two turds about you or your countries, the corporations just want your resources.

1. where are these vaunted resurces?

2. why do you idiots cheer when Obama refuses to allow us to tap our own resources?

10. yeah, and Poppy spent mucho dineros on PR
selling the american people a war against Saddam. Remember the incubator lie? And, most americans ate it up. Of course, nothing was mentioned about the carnage of Iraq soldiers who were retreating. We love dealing with human rights abusers that go with the corporate flow, and SA, Kuwait fit the bill. By taking out Saddam, we've done SA a favor and strengthened Iran. Iraq was the check on Iran. Saddam was no friend of OBL nor AlQuaeda, but we have been fed the bullshite for so long. Just go back and read the PNAC agenda--it's not about democracies, it's about control of resources, and we are paying the bill, but won't see anything in return--but bet your last dollar, the global oil corporations will see gain big time at the expense of our infrastructure, our lives, our money and the resources and lives of those we are supposed to tag "the enemy."

Did you read that kids (it's in there amid the rambling)?

16. Oh, I don't know.
Everybody in that administration had a BlackBerry that was running its communications through a totally illegal independent email server, the contents of which were discovered and which are sure to leak out sooner or later because they're not protected by any Presidential records act.

Many of those phones had cameras and microphones. Several of the official photographs of the Bush team meeting on 9/11/01 show the meetings being recorded with high-quality digital devices.

All of that information passed through multiple hands and stages of transmission before it could be destroyed or hidden, giving multiple opportunities for that information to be captured, say by the Chinese, or an allied ECHELON nation, which itself could be compromised.

Who knows how many mid-level Bush officials saw themselves being lined up to take the fall for a thousand crimes and salted away insurance files on insecure home computers and easy to lose USB drives? Then there are the victims, the victim nations which were duped and overthrown and manipulated, and those who were coerced into silence and complicity.

And then there's the money, the trail of dirty, bloody money misdirected from some war zone which will certainly find its way back into Republican campaigns for the next decade.

But documents, no, I don't expect to find many of those. As an old-schooler, Cheney knew how to kill a paper trail. But Bush and Cheney were an interesting combination of malevolence and incompetence. I don't believe they are competent enough to keep the worst of what they did a secret for very much longer. It's pretty easy to guess what some of it was.

Apparently the fact that Iraq initiated an uprovoked war of aggression against Iran (Shitheads though the Iranians they may be), committing a 'Crime against Peace' of the sort for which people were hanged after WW2, seems to have eluded their brilliantester li'l minds.

You know, I've always thought that "Highway of Death" business was largely left wing bullshit. No doubt a bunch of Iraqi "soldiers" were killed, as they should have been, but as far as wholesale carnage is concerned, no way. This was a gigantic, maybe miles-long, bumper-to-bumper gridlock of trucks, cars, and military vehicles of all kinds. They were all stopped when the lead vehicles were shot up. Then the A-10s and gunships came in, one after another, and blew up the others more or less at their leisure, because they couldn't go anywhere. Any Iraqi who sat in his vehicle, as one truck after another up and down the line was blown up, patiently awaiting his turn to be blown up, would probably have died anyway from forgetting to breathe. Granted, these are our president's co-religionists, the same mental giants who enjoy blowing themselves up with bomb vests, but still, I have to believe the vast majority of them escaped into the surrounding desert, rather than sitting in their vehicles waiting for their A-10 appointment. Every time I see a weepy story lamenting the slaughter, it includes a picture of the same charred corpse.

I luv the smell of A10 depleted rounds in the mornin'! The Iraqi's have stated more than once they were more afraid of the A10's than anything else we thru at them! I guarandamnteeya as soon as they heard those dual jets headed their way, they beet feet to the other side of the dunes!

Besides, so what if they did get their ass kicked? How many criminals do ya suppose were retreating from justice? Maybe the DUmmies should ask the Kuwaiti's that lost loved ones, and their women who were raped by these cutthroats, how they feel about the poor Iraqi military that attacked them out of pure ****in' greed! I guess looting, raping and pillaging is A-okay as long as it is against a people you hate!

P-40s had the A6M2 Zero (the Zero variant in use around the time of Pearl Harbor) at a disticnt disadvantage when the P-40s stayed in the vertical--diving and climbing--and didn't try to turn with the Japanese pilots.  The P-40 could easily outdive and outclimb its' rival.  That's also how the F4F Wildcat pilots of the Navy were able to keep the Zeros at bay--that, and a certain lieutenant commander by the name of John Thatch developed the "Thatch Weave," whereby a pair of Wildcats could cover each other's tails.

Strangely enough, the P-51 Mustang wasn't worth a damn until it got to Britian, and a British engine was put into it.  Once that happened, well . . . you know the rest of the story.

Yes, I've seen the size of the shell casings of the GAU-8 Avenger 7-barrelled 30mm cannon on the A-10.  (For those that don't know, think "quart milk bottles," and you're close.)  The Fairchild engineers started with the gun, then built the airframe around the thing.  An ugly bird, to be sure.  But, if you're the GI or Marine on the ground calling for air support and a flight of those show up, you are very happy.

And yes, the shark's teeth started with the P-40, but I've seen pics of both P-47s and P-51s with teeth painted on, too.

I think any airframe that had a P desig had them at one time or another. I'm a pushover for all the old WWII military documentaries. Didn't Thatcher also start the wing man principle? Seems like that's the first time it was used. From then on we have always flown in pairs.

Yeah, the P51 was a dog until they outfitted them with the Rolls Royce 12 cyl. The Allison was a real under performer. Another draw back was some of them were carburetored instead of fuel injected! German pilots attributed it to getting away from them sometimes because the 51 would stall at the end of a steep dive occasionally.

I saw personal pics of this infamous hi way. MANY of the vehicles were still holding the "unfortunate" ( :yahoo: ) thief behind the wheel. The soldier that had taken the pics (there were 3-4 envelopes worth) showed me how many of the stolen cars, trucks, and anything else the Iraqi's could steal, were filled with stolen items, or what was left of them.
Neither one of us had any weepy eyes for the assholes. Yes, I agree that the media was/is complicit in manufacturing "outrage" for the poor, poor Iraqis.  :whatever:
“The national budget must be balanced. The public debt must be reduced; the arrogance of the authorities must be moderated and controlled. Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”
