Author Topic: Question for the Moms and Dads (Read 6853 times)

Okay...I have a one year old. Currently, we take classes at the Little Gym twice a week. However, the summer session only has one time that fits our schedule, so I'm looking for another class that we can go to. The swimming classes around here 1) are on the weekends and 2) require waiting in line at 5AM to sign up, which I am neither willing nor able to do. I'd like for us to take a music or art class, but I haven't had any luck in finding any-I've looked at the local parks, at the Y, the JCC, and all the classes I have found are for 18mos and up.

My question: have I missed any places? Where else can I look? Why am I having such a hard time finding something for a one year old?

PS-sorry if my grammar/sentence structure is lacking tonight. The baby has learned to walk. I'm exhausted.

First of all, congrats on the walking! They grow up so fast!!!

Have you tried local churches? I know the ones around here offer not only Mother's day out but activities for the child and sometimes things you can do together like crafts.

I guess it's hard at that age because so many 12 month olds are just learning to walk and are still in diapers.

You may also want to ask the local school board. Our county school system manages all of the "parks and recreation" activities and that includes summer camps and activities for all ages. Worth a shot I guess.

churches are a good idea
also..local Headstart program has a ton of family stuff..at least ours does from birth upward in parenting/kids bonding stuff. best of all its on government grants
since my child is grounded from church until she's probably about 35, I look to the headstart and the local preschool to entertain her and wear off some of her excess demonic energy....

I suggest buying like 5 Barney tapes and use those instead of going anywhere. My kids were both addicted to Barney worse than any smack addict ever. They are both in the top 5% of their class. Just find a play group for social interaction but don't bother with those stupid classes that don't really teach anything anyway.

My best friend has a little boy a little bit older and he has a really cool video that teaches sign language and he has started signing what he wants to her. My kids could sing every Barney song ever made though, I think that is way cooler. Who the heck ever uses sign language when you could sing Barney all day!?!?!?

but those are not apparently as addictive. My little one never got hooked on those..but Barney..oh sweet Jesus..do you know how ashamed of myself I am, pouring over Amazon.com and Ebay to find those deals on Barney tapes and DVD? on the other hand, when people meet my daughter for the first time they inevitably say three things:
1. Beautiful little girl
2. Smart kid
3. So polite and well mannered for her age

She didn't get any of that from me so it musta been Barney

the zoos sometimes do stuff, and the library usually has a toddler story time, maybe local museums might have something?

I never really did any structure stuff with my kids when they were that little, so not sure what's out there...

Can you go to your city hall or chamber of commerce? We live in a smaller town and they(city hall) send us booklets out with classes and memberships and such offered by different organizations. Ours frequently has art and music classes. Perhaps yours has something similar, but doesn't send them out? Worth a look.

You know, I think there is something to Barney. My best friend's daughter(now 16) is one of the brightest kids in her class and a terrific kid. She loved Barney when she was a little ankle biter. Only show she'd watch.

I had never heard of The Little Gym, until today when I got a coupon in the mail for 50% off for the first year tuition or something.

I have had Sophia in the Gymboree play class since she was 5 months old, and she LOVES it. I do too, because they move them up to different levels based on their capabilities.

In Jan. after the holidays when things "slowed down" some, I put her in the Gymboree music class...and that really isn't for her, because she isn't willing to sit there and let me tap on her foot...or do much of the other things required to sit...she likes to G-O, GO. And, I believe it was that class that was the culprit for her getting sick...chronically...from the end of January until the middle of March, when I pulled her out of Gymboree

...she will resume the Gymboree play class only after her birthday party and the pollen dissipates to ensure that nothing else is going around that she can catch.

Soooo, I highly recommend Gymboree. And, it also depends on who is running the class. Gymboree also offers art and music classes, but to be honest, I don't know if they are offered for 1 year olds. When they start walking and really moving around, they really don't want to be still long enough to do much of anything artistic...so, maybe that is why. I would check their website to see when the music and art classes are offered.

I also do a weekly Mommy and Me walking group...and you can check out what is local to you in your area at meetup.com.

At the doctor I've gone to back in Atlanta, they always have a tv going for the kids (family doctor), and it seems like whenever I've gone there, that show is on.

I try to tune it out, but it's obnoxious enough that I am unable to.

OMG I LOATHE CALLIOU!!!!! That show is not allowed in our house. As for the Doodlebops, I'd rather watch Elmo-and I HATE ELMO. Anyone's kids like the Wiggles? They're tolerable.

The local park and rec does have classes (I checked the catalog) but they all seem to be for 2+ years, or for babies still not walking. I'll look around at local churches to see what I can find, because I know ours doesn't have a playgroup/Moms club.

The closest Gymboree is like, 30 minutes from here, and while I would be interested in it, I think I'd want to do one of the trial classes first. It sounds a lot like what we do at the Little Gym already. But hey, it makes her nap really well, so why complain?

I've always loved the BB. I used to read those books to my little brother back in the 80's so I have a fondness for them that extends out of that.
